We had reservations. The hostess was pleasant, because it was a 6:30pm reservation and they were a bit slower the hostess was also our waitress. She was very helpful with the menu. We both ordered the catch of the day which was blackened grouper, kale and a side of roasted potatoes. I had a glass of delicious Riesling wine. The meal did take a little longer than we expected and might have been a problem if we had not been there 1.5 hours before our show at the Straz. Without us asking they brought or charging for it, they brought out an appetizer and apologized for the time for our meal. Overall we were impressed. The food was delicious, it was quiet and easy to have a private conversation. The staff were very friendly and professional.
We had reservations, but ran late due to traffic. We called them 7 + times to see about pushing our reservation back but no one answered any of the times we called. When we arrived, we were told we couldn't be seated and that if they did seat us, "service would be compromised." Her excuse for not answering the phone was "we are really busy - I answered, but got a dial tone." Not one apology - not one smile - nothing. We told them we were fine being seated and when we walked back to the dining area it was half empty.... Our server was beyond rude. He told us the kitchen was backed up but they would "try" to get our food out as quick as possible. We ordered a few appetizers and drinks and he disappeared for about 30 min. He wasn't even waiting on anyone in the dining area- literally gone...When we finally saw him again we asked if we would be able to get our meals out "once we ever ordered" within a decent time frame as we had a show to be at in an hour and he said "no, don't order any meals were too busy" so we ordered one more appetizer. He brought them out 5 minutes later and there was barely a spoon full of queso so we asked if we could get more and his response was "that's it were all out, I tried to tell you earlier were busy." I will NEVER return to this restaurant and I literally could not believe some of the things these people said to us. HORRIBLE service, and the food was poor as well.
Reserved a hight top table. Was seated in the dining room. Waited 10 mins for a server or water. Ordered an app, drinks, and my friend ordered a sandwhich. 15 mins, no app, no drinks. Received app and I decided to order a sandwich too. Waited 20more mins for my sandwhich which never arrived until I asked for the bill. I refused the sandwich as we had been there over an hour. I ate 3 motz sticks and had one drink. $15. Terrible organization and customer focus.
The food was outstanding......staff not so much but we arrived when it first opened.
When we saw where it was actually located, I called to cancel the reservation. I was told I didn't have a reservation. I had received an email with a reservation #. ????
No one at hostess stand. Slow service waited 15 min to place a drink order. Food came out in timely matter. Waitress not very good.
We chose this place as it was close to the Straz for a pre show dinner. We didn’t know where to park when we arrived and spent ten minutes trying to find someone to ask. Warning, you need to go to front desk of the hotel and purchase a parking card for $20 to get into their lot so give yourself time before reservation! Then we were told that our Open Table reservation was not showing up and that it happens all the time but they were able to find us seating near the lobby bar. The chairs are covered in conference style material which was a bit uncomfortable. However, on a high note, our server was very nice and the chirizi poutin, scallops and burger were very good. They also have ticketed menu items that are promised to come out quick if you’re heading out to a show. Overall, good spot for a pre show meal.
Excellent scallops. Good wine list. Friendly, helpful staff.
Service and food were very good. I would definitely go back again.
Went to dine there prior to a show at the Straz Center. It is incredibly convenient being right across the street. The service was a bit faster than my previous experiences but the place was only 20% full which surprised me. Maybe the service challenges of the past are impacting the popularity. The food was good. I had the surf and turf special and while the filet was prepared to my ordered temperature, the quality of the cut was average at best. The lobster was prepared well. Given the good but not great quality of the meal, it seemed a bit high priced which is not normally an issue. I can't say that I will make this a regular stop, but in certain situations it is just too convenient a location to pass up.
The waitress was amazing and very professional , the food was great ... service was top notch 👍
We went there for a Mother’s Day meal. Food was good (a little overpriced - except the tomato soup - not good) and the server was really good. But we were bothered by little nats (small flying insects) throughout the meal - gross - felt like the DR (and we were inside!).Management didn’t come by to apologize or Comp any of the meal. To add insult to injury, I spent almost $200 and they still charged $10 for parking.
I would not recommend this restaurant or go back to it.
Maestro’s at the Straz wasn’t open so we booked near the venue. Very disappointing. Service was so slow people were leaving. We ordered specialty drinks that were so sweet with simple syrup that I couldn’t even taste bourbon. Wouldn’t bother to return.
We arrived a few minutes early, stood waiting for someone to seat us, finally a waiter said just sit anywhere. So we found a empty table that was clean, most still had dirty dishes and not cleared. A waitress saw us and took our drink order I told her we had reservations as we were going to the theater , 20 minutes later no sign of the waitress or the drinks, I finally walked up to the bar and ask for the drinks he said he could't serve me a waitress had to, I told him we ordered them from the waitress. I asked again and he gave me a Moscato and a glass of water. About 5 minutes later our waitress comes by and I said to her what are you cooking the food also. She took our order, the food arrived fairly quickly after that. I told the waitress that I was not paying for the drinks that this was ridiculous. I have never seen such disorganization EVER, the bar was a mess, the bartender's acted like it was there first day. I would not recommend this place to anyone. Not staffed properly, dirty tables everywhere, poor service, you could see that there was very poor management if any at this restaurant. A hot dog from a street vender would have been better.
Food and drinks were very good. Great happy hour prices on drinks. BUT it takes forever to get the drinks and the food. So plan on 2 hours if you are having 2 cocktails and something to eat.
They were in the weeds and couldn’t make good on our reservation. We had to order apps to get out in time to make our show even though we allowed ourselves almost two hours. Server was friendly, apologetic and gave us a discount.
OK for pre theater dinner if going to a performance at the Stratz Center. The service is too slow. Waited 35 minutes for our dinner. Soup cold, main entrees luke warm.
The server was confused when my wife asked about the selection of house white wine. The server did not know if there was any hard cider or Smirnoff Ice available. I settled for a Margharita that took almost 15 minutes to arrive. My wife's glass of wine was woefully 'short' by comparison to other patrons, as confirmed by the 'Service Lead' who did try to make amends for the server's shortcomings. The food took well over 1/2 hour to arrive and the place was not busy. The kitchen staff member who brought our food to the table was jovial and turned out to be the best part of our dining experience. Since this establishment is right next door to the Straz Theater, a large entertainment complex, we will likely give it one more try but their first impression left much to be desired. Hopefully they will improve.
Honestly, if I could rate zeroes for all, I would. Completely awful experience. Made a reservation via open table. They lost it. Seated us, then we waited 20 minutes before having to tackle a waiter to order a drink. The drink order sat for another 15 minutes. At one point there were 4 servers/bartenders behind the bar, oblivious to the patrons. This is no exaggeration. Net net, do not waste your time here.
Ate dinner and breakfast here during stay at Barrymore Hotel. Breakfast very overpriced and came out cold (even though we were the ONLY people in the restaurant).
Dinner service was strange. One person in our party wanted the Shepherd's Pie - so the waiter ran to put her order in early stating it took 45 minutes. 10 minutes later, the rest of us had just ordered and the Shepherd's Pie arrived. I ordered the grouper special and received salmon (which I don't eat) - Food was okay - anything fried tasted like old oil.
Attending show at Strazz
Our server, Justin, was excellent! Food was good. We had grouper, fish and chips, shepherds pie, scallops and veggie burger. No complaints from anyone. However, superb service is the reason to dine here!
The 5 stars says it all. Excellent in all areas. Can’t wait to return,
We have made WaterWorks or dinner spot before going to the theater. The food is really good for the price point but the service leaves us stumped every time. We’ve never been late to a show but we always feel as if we’ve seen a show (comedy) getting our dinner.
Food was good, but service was slow. It took over 30 minutes to get our drinks from the bar.
The dining room was not open because they didn't expect to be busy. Our server spent more time chatting with other employees then working. I had to ask for a glass of water 3 times. We spent a lot of time waiting for him. Food was okay but not good enough to go back.
Extremely disappointed! Unhappy with it all. Looked 100.% better online!!!
Dining room had not been swept beneath the tables or in the public spaces since the noon meal. Waiter was pleasant but not well trained. He took 15 minutes to deliver a bottle of wine and it was labeled a different grape and a blend, as opposed to the listed bottle we ordered. He did not know how to present or serve the wine. Appetizer “Triple” contained guacamole, a watery Pico de Gallo (missing the cilantro) and a warm jack cheese dip that was so cool it was separating. Experience had the service & feel of a bus station cafeteria.
Phillip is a treasure. A punny punny treasure. The food was good The speed at which it arrived was outstanding.
We've been to this restaurant several times. It never improves. The food isn't bad - once you get it. Service is VERY slow. Most of the entrees do not come with sides but sides are available at $5.95 each! The sides aren't anything special - fries, whipped potatoes, basic tossed salad, etc. Would it really cost them that much to give you a tossed salad with your meal? The location is across from The Straz Center, so it's very convenient for dining before going to the theater - which is, in my opinion, the ONLY reason to go there. This restaurant has so much potential - unfortunately, they need to get their act together.
Enjoyed the Cuban sandwich and my husband had a wonderful soup, a special of the day.
Near the theater and convenient to parking. We will go again.
My wife and I had dinner here before the Phantom next door at Straz Center. We made reservations ahead of time. Felt like we were kind of taking a chance due to all of the poor reviews that we had read previously online but decided to give it a try based on the location. We weren't disappointed! Very accommodating. Excellent service. Calamari was excellent. Fish and chips excellent. Key lime pie very good.
Perfect spot for dinner before going to the Straz. Our server was friendly and helpful. The food was good and we had plenty of time of enjoy our meal and then stroll along the river to the theater. We returned for a drink afterwards while we waited for traffic to thin out. Great evening.
Never again. Dining area is very plain and ugly. The wait staff is friendly and tries to be helpful. The appetizer was decent. However, we waited an hour for the entrée. Finally, rather than missing the show, we gave up and left hungry.
This is not high end dining and yet very pleasant and the food was quite good. There was more chicken and cheese than found in most restaurant quesadillas and the cod in the fish and chips was very good and fresh and nicely prepared. Not greasy. This was our first visit and we will definitely go back. The only negative was that they do not have a wine list and our server was poorly informed.
Service was pretty good for an obviously new server who really tried hard. The meal was quite unexceptional and the first glass of wine was sent back because it was so bad. It appears to be a new management group who is still getting organized. May be worth another try when they get their act together.
Wonderful location if you are attending Straz.
We ended up sitting at bar, which was a better move than a table given the number of times someone from a table came up to the bar asking where their drinks were. Two bartenders who would not make eye contact and moved slower than any I have ever seen. Food was average. Atmosphere was just not welcoming or comfortable. We left with headaches because there was a constant underlying thumping vibration. No idea where it was generating from but just added to a less than desirable visit
My friends and I were there pre show at The Straz. You couldn’t have found a better pick. Food was excellent, our waiter, Aaron was amazing and the Jazz music took it over the top. Would absolutely recommend this restaurant for any occasion.
We arrived , and after three staff at the front desk finished their conversation, we were seated. Our server must have been new, was very personable but slow and inattentive for the most part. Took our 2 glasses of wine 15 mins to arrive. We decided to split a dinner as our server suggested because it was a generous portion. We also decided to split the side Caesar. Took 20 more minutes to get our salad and even had to ask for it again, and then ask for extra plates to divide it ourselves. Our dinner arrived on a cutting board, one knife and no plates. Had to ask for plates and an extra knife. Yikes and this was an anniversary and Valentine dinner. I will say the best part of the restaurant was the salted caramel cheesecake for dessert.
Do not go here for breakfast!! I brought a group of 12 people in our mid 20’s and was horrified to enter a weird dark side room that looked like a bingo room for 85 year olds with black seat covers and a wooden dance floor. This is a crappy continental breakfast in a hotel that was completely empty except for a couple tables of elderly people. The room in the pictures is not the breakfast room!! It was advertised as a “post gasparilla recovery brunch with bottomless mimosas” and there were none. Open table should take this option off for breakfast immediately.
