Water Grill - South Coast Plaza

This restaurant has always gone out of there way to make us comfortable. The food and service have always been the best we give it a ten. Have a great day. Thank you. Christine
Terrific meal in a nice setting. The lobster rolls are great. Oysters are also good; wide range of origin choices. Specialty cocktails good.
Clear that they take pride in taste, presentation, freshness, service and ambiance. No question that we will choose Water Grill over any other restaurant in the area when we are shopping at South Coast Plaza or attending the Performing Arts Center. Can hardly wait to return for a wonderful experience.
Birthday lunch for girlfriends. Server was very attentive. Food was excellent ... shrimp salad, tuna poke and special fish of the day. I forget how wonderful this restaurant is because it is not on my "normal" commute. And they take reservations through Open Table.
Not quite sure why I made a reservation for 8:00 pm then waited for the table for twenty-five minutes.
When the host finally showed us to the table we noted at least eight empty tables on the way to our table.
What is the point of making a reservation when you have to wait 25 minutes for a table and then discover eight empty tables along the way? Strange mismanagement.
Food is excellent and service was very good. I has the shrimp and grits and my guest had fish and chips. The polenta was to die for as well as the roasted butternut squash. We finished the meal with the bread pudding..also excellent. I would highly recommend for a adult gathering, date night or friends evening!
The Valentines menú was excellent! Value and quality A+! Our server, Holly was outstanding. She was cordial, knowledgeable and her effort to ensure that we had a great evening was evident! Javier, the sommelier suggested the perfect wine based on our feedback.
So after reading all the reviews some good and some bad I didn’t know what to expect we came for a pay valentines meal and everything was exceptional we created our own tower and our waiter was even able to pull some strings with the chef to get us the ceviche even tho they were “out” finished it off with the sea bass that was perfectly cooked and some butter cake brought our own bottle of wine and no corkage fee it was perfect
February 15 the day after Valentine's Day very busy. We had reservations for party of six. Had to wait for our table for a few minutes. We were seated in the bar area in a very comfortable "nook" area with upgraded comfortable seating and room for everyone. The area was comfortable and open.(we will request this area again in the future).
Service was first class all the way. The choice of entrees was good including seafood and steak dishes. We have been here several times and never disappointed.
Highly recommend to all for a very comfortable, entertaining dining experience!
Great for Valentines Day. They had live music and a professional photographer. They had a three course special menu but you could order off their regular menu too. The food is always delicious with Gluten-free and special diet options.
Food was not great. Atmosphere & ambiance was top notch. Only would go back to sit at bar & have a drink.
The service for our party of four was outstanding. That always makes the dining experience exceptional.
We came here for Valentine’s Day and I probably would not return again. They seated us in this separate room from the main dining area that looked more like a banquet hall. They did have live music which was nice, but we came to eat at the restaurant not in a weird separate room. The meal was okay but I had to remind them to bring my appetizer (it was a prix fixe menu) and it came so late I had them box it up. We both got filets and my husbands tasted awesome and tender, but mine felt like a whole different cut of meat it wasn’t tender at all (we both got medium rare). They also ran out of all the desserts off the Valentine’s Day menu which was a bummer. I felt like we were being cheated of the value of paying for a set course and not receiving that. I was so disappointed because we love Kings fish house and thought it would be even better. Maybe I would go on a day that’s not a holiday/special occasion but it kinda ruined the special night.
The service was great across the board... great job to mgmt for having a superb team... it’s all about execution and the WG Team did just that...
So disappointed on Valentine's Day. I went here for a work seminar, food was amazing at time. I wanted to go here for Valentine's Day. We had a reservation at 8 pm, arrived a minute after 8pm. Saw there was a photo booth for the event thats kind of nice. The hostess took us back to the dining area for the event for COUPLES ONLY. I personally felt kind of cheesy that the restaurant blocked out q banquet room for a special event. Not so romantic feeling, each table has a white table cloth, plain candles, no decorations whatsoever, and one singer. Why even bother reserve a banquet room for your customers that wants to come here on Valentine's Day? They limited on their menu, ita a prefix for $75 per person. Small portion for choices of appetizer, main course and dessert. Food were mediocre, nothing to rave about.
Overall, so disappointed.
Mediocre at best. Food and service are average. Not worth the money.
Very pleasant evening. Could not recommend enough.
Good for friends and date.
The food and service were both excellent. We were lucky enough to get reservations last minute for Valentine's Day. Our server was very accommodating to our wants the whole night!
Valentine’s Day. I ordered a steak and asked for it to be well done. It took the restaurant three times to get it right. My waitress did not listen very well. Other than that great ambiance family oriented
Went for Valentines Day.The pre-set menu and wine pairings were great and made the whole evening enjoyable.
I wish the restaurant had a vegan menu
Nice atmosphere. Food was good. Great service.
Jeremiah our waiter was amazing, and our margaritas verde was delicious.
One of the best spots on OC, for a night out. It serves both as a classy place for intimate date nights or a relaxed atmosphere by the bar to grab drinks with friends.
I had never been there and was amazed by the sheer size of the restaurant and the amount of people there.
It was the day before Valentines Day, so very busy, but despite a reservation a few weeks in advance, and open booths, we were placed in an awkward seat between the bar and the booths. The delicious bread choices and my martini helped me forget about that quickly.
Given the date, we were offered the choice of the pre-fixe menu or the standard menu. My BF chose the standard menu with Cesar salad and a couple of Rincon oysters for starters. He enjoyed the Cesar, but the Rincon’s were a little too much for his liking. I chose the oyster sampler and enjoyed all of them, but really loved all of the eastern oysters the best. For dinner, I chose the Chilean Sea Bass, which was melt in my mouth delicious! My BF had the Alaskan Black Cod/Sablefish Kabayaki. He said it was fabulous, and it was delicious. We finished off with some of the best key lime pie, I’ve ever had!
I’ll definitely go back for a nice meal, but next time, I’ll probably try the outdoor bar area or request a booth.
Great atmosphere and service. Little pricey on food
Food was delayed
Great restaurant. Highly recommend!
Unfortunately we were settled at a very awkward table facing the kitchen. Just put a damper on the night.
Noisy, terrible music- too loud to be called "background". While my Swordfish, and my wife's Scallops were excellent, the stuff they were served on was awful. I'm afraid they have become a "Chain Restaurant"
The food and service was absolutely amazing. Far beyond excellent . Will go back there again.
A lot of choices. La Carta. Order smart and share,
Celebrating my birthday!
The place is gorgeous. The food is eh. The price is terrible considering the food is eh. There is nothing that stood out to me or would have me return.
Timing is AWFUL! We had a dinner reservation at 8 and are still here 3 hours later. Service was phenomenal from 8-9 and then just fell off a cliff at 9pm. We waited 25 minutes between our salad until the steak & lobster came out. Our fries never came out and it took me another 10-15 to flag a busboy to get our waitress. Fries ended up coming out after we had finished our entree. We were then presented the bill even though we wanted dessert. Ordered ice cream and it also was eh. Texture wasn’t creamy, very frost-bitten/icy. Our two favorite things were the coleslaw that came with the steak and the wafer cookie that came with the ice cream which is just plain sad LOL. We won’t be coming back. For $200+ we will go to mastros down the street.
We had a great dinner and were pleasantly surprised by the no corkage fee. The tables are close together but we had a nice chat with the couple next to us. Recommend the calamari appetizer!
I think we unfortunately went on an off night when it was a bit too crowded. We had 6:15 reservations and when they came to seat us at about 6:30 (which i completely understand that they got backed up) another group got furious that they were waiting since 6 and I was more than happy to let them have our table. When they sat us at 6:45 th manager came up and was very apologetic and insisted on giving us a free appetizer (crab sushi which was wonderful) and the waiter and manager were wonderful throughout the meal. However, my step mom ordered the lobster that was not supposed to be spicy and it was too spicy for her to eat. My Dad ordered the black cod without spice (i said to put the spice on mine) and they both came without any spice/flavor at all. My Dad sent his back uneaten. The manager/waiter comped both the lobster and one black cod which we felt awful about as I know it costs them money for that (but is why i am giving it a 5 star in value) but I don't think we will be going back to this restaurant anytime soon as there are so many wonderful restaurants in the area. At least I wouldn't order the cod again. But the manager and our server really worked hard to make it a wonderful experience so I think it was just a bit of an off night.
Other thing to note: if you are a bit queasy seeing the food you are going to eat 'alive' before serving, this is not the restaurant for you. Big tanks of the largest crabs I've ever seen in my life. (lobster and shrimp as well) .
My wife and I had dinner before attending a performance at the South Coast Repertory theater. When we arrived we were early, but seated before our reservation time. Our waiter was well informed and assisted us in making very good dinner choices. The food arrived in a timely manner and was hot and tasty. We had used the valet parking and when we informed the waiter about where to park for the show he encouraged us to leave the car with the valet as the parking did not close and the theater was only a 5 minute walk from the grill. This was great advice saving a second and our car was parked underground and retrieved almost immediately when we returned. Both of us enjoyed our food and will return again.
