Top Hatters Kitchen and Bar is a modern neighborhood restaurant, that has secured a place on the SF Chronicle's top 100 list and has been honored with a Michelin Bib Gourmand recognition. We serve an eclectic mix of rustic made-from-scratch dishes, celebrating the wonderful textures that make up our neighborhoods. We offer a mingling of small and large plates, meant to be shared, always nuanced and inspired by what we harvest from our neighboring small farms. Our food is approachable, eschewing complicated names, and bohemian in spirit as we are nonconforming and unconventional—sophisticated only in the way we can weave different ethnic influences and ingredients together.

    We came with very high expectations from other reviews. Lovely patio. Very good service. Unusual very eclectic menu. Grilled oysters were terrific. Vegitarian curry was very good but came with dried out banh mi bread.. Savory donuts interesting but dry and not great. We shared a platter of grilled meats meant for lettuce wraps. The short ribs were very tough, some pieces inedible, may have been overcooked.. The chicken was not tender, probably overcooked. Meats are meant for lettuce wrap but the lettuce was under the meats and other items which made it difficult to access. Not enough lettuce for wraps. The grilled meat platter seems to be the most popular meat course and was overall disappointment.

    Banh mi pork is exceptional. Pork was grilled and veggies super fresh. Ube Cream Soda was like a beautiful dessert.

    The food and service at Top Hatters are wonderful, but the table at which we were seated is at an angle where very bright sunlight shines in the eyes of diners seated on the street side of the table, so much so that it was very uncomfortable. This happened at 7pm on a June evening. Staff tried to move an outdoor umbrella to block the sun but couldn’t so the diners in our party had to wait at least 30 minutes for the angle of the sun to move and finally allow them to eat without a strong glare. Management should work to screen or otherwise shade the window to prevent this.

    The food is fantastic, from the drinks and appetizers through dessert. Unfortunately, they have stuck with the QR code menu/ ordering and the staff didn't feel the need to actually provide service at any point during our meal. We had to raise our hands and waive them wildly around to merely ask a question. Really disappointing service experience.
