Lovely remodel , food was outstanding . Our waiter was a delight and treated us like royalty as we celebrated our wedding anniversary. ❤️ La Jolla❤️

Oh My to Oh Wow. The remodel is great and has a fun new upscale vibe. Staff welcoming and accommodating and the food....let's pause here...deserves an award and standing ovation. Portions are tapa style and meant to be shared. Everything we ate was over the top yummy. Highly recommend the carmel pudding.

Nice vibe at the restaurant, good waiter. We dine out a lot and my wife is gluten free. It is never an issue. The kitchen made her gluten free halibut, we asked for some butter…the waiter was very apologetic but said “no”. Tater sauce, “no”. Anything to make the piece of dry fish a little better? The answer was “no”. The nice waiter apologized again, and said the kitchen said” “no”. This experience was a first for us, we haven’t heard no that often, ever. There was no rudeness involved, we were too dumbfounded to respond and the waiter was genuinely uncomfortable. If you’re gluten free or have any dietary restrictions, go somewhere else. If you like $25.00 Martinis, this is the place for you.

I have loved the Whaling Bar since it opened. The walnut bread and the Cesar with the yummy Twinkie croutons are an addiction. Only two things I feel sad about: there are no variety of Cabernet choices by the glass. And that one choice is almost 30$ for the glass. A bit goug-ey. And the recently changed the menu taking off some favorites. So I’ll always return but maybe just for the salad and the bread for now.

Apparently, the ventilation system was down- so as we sat there the kitchen billowed smoke into the restaurant/bar area. We didn’t know what was happening at first, because we were in the front of the restaurant away from the kitchen, but the air had become thick with smoke, just as we were finishing eating. When we got up to leave, I could see all the smoke coming from the kitchen- what a health hazard for the crew! Management should’ve closed the kitchen down before it got so bad, but apparently they didn’t want to lose business over the holiday weekend. On the other hand, our server was very nice and did a good job. I really enjoyed our food; especially the celery salad.

My family and I had a wonderful experience at The Whaling Bar. Luke provided excellent service, and all the staff was very friendly. The food and drinks were delicious. We are looking forward to going back again.
