I visited The Rookery this Sunday (22 Oct 2017) with friends. Our guests arrived 20 minutes early to be met by a less than welcoming member of staff who couldnt get his head around the fact that they were early. We ordered drinks and a selection of the tapas style starters from the menu. However when the starters arrived we asked if it would be possible to have side plates, we were told by the same member of staff that there weren’t any clean side plates and to make do We ordered the 'sticky toffee pudding with warm toffee sauce’ as described on the menu. When it arrived the pudding itself was cold and dry as if it had been sat out for some time, more frustratingly was the lack of 'toffee sauce'. Upon asking if it would be possible to have a small jug of toffee sauce were informed that it had run out. To top it all off, when we asked for spoons to eat our respective deserts, there weren’t enough clean spoons so I was provided with a large dirty soup spoon The above was annoying but the roast had made up for the lack of service - where and why I now vow to never go back is because of the rude and patronising way in which we were treated when paying the bill (£180 for 4 people). When asked the question “was everything okay with your meal?”, I calmly explained that the food was good but it was sadly let down by the lack of plates and cutlery and that the toffee pudding was below par. A young chap stepped in, we assumed the manager, who didn’t offer any form of apology but instead thought it best to suggest I was being precious for not being happy with having to use a soup spoon. In addition he then put their failings on us by saying “You don’t appreciate that we are in the middle of a busy service”. As we left we overheard two other tables complaining, I just hope they didn’t get spoken to the way we were We left angry, disappointed and insulted. I would suggest The Windmill, The Abbeville, The Bobbin, PowderKeg or The Roundhouse and The Avalon - as better options!

I don't like posting a bad review and especially at a place where I have previously had such amazing meals. The main meal I had was such a disappointment and it has definitely made me rethink visiting again. My husband and his friend had really lovely burgers, so this review takes this into account. The drinks are great and the service is efficient.

The service is absolutely awful and dismissive at best. The good might be good, but I walked out before I had chance to try it, due to the rude staff.

Really let down by very poor service. We went on a quiet Sunday evening and still had to wait ages to order and pay. It is very expensive for very average roast. Not even a Yorkshire pudding with the Roast Beef even though it was advertised. Wouldn't recommend.
