Service great, food unfortunately did not live up to the reviews and hype. Arugula salad was lame, “house made” focaccia was stale, and the $35 truffle ravioli that came with 6 ravioli (!!?!) was bland. Won’t be returning and wish I had read more accurate reviews before visiting with a friend who was visiting SD :/
Most amazing dining experience in my life. Food was amazing, service was impeccable. Chef was friendly and outgoing. Best Wellington and the service made our evening even better. Highly recommend The Red Door to anyone that has not been.
Luciano, chef/owner stands out in San Diego cuisine as having a wide ranging menu, all of which is so appealing it’s difficult to choose. The mushroom/white truffle Ravioli, clearly Italian sourced, is exemplary of what pasta should taste like. Everything we selected was delicious, and chef stopped by to pair an excellent wine for our selection. Would be happy to return again and again as the menu is so large. I would particularly like to try the swordfish, Although the portion looked large enough for at least two.
I rarely take the time to write a restaurant review but Red Door may be the best restaurant in all of San Diego. The menu, the food, the service are all impeccable. The chef visits each table and his passion is palpable. Everything is locally sourced from small vendors and farms. Every time I go back with new people their enthusiasm matches my own. The decor is very low key - not slick like many new San Diego eateries. It is clear the owner/chef put his money into quality ingredients and professional staff. Fantastic value too at about $50 with wine p/p. Enormous portions encourage sharing.
Just consistently great food & service every time I go there
Great food, amazing staff and the chef comes to the table . It was worth every penny !
Fantastic place. Very intimate with outstanding food. The owner/chef stops by your table to introduce himself and check on you. A very nice touch. Gotta try here for a nice enjoyable dinner.
Great service and great food!
I had a friend in town & we met up at The Red Door for such a lovely dining experience! The owner, along with every other staff member, were so friendly and accommodating. Don’t even get me started on the food! We ordered almost everything on the menu, and let me tell you, we were NOT disappointed! We will definitely be returning.
This restaurant is a San Diego classic.
The staff and the chef always makes you feel like family.
Great menu - so many great choices. Not a typical Italian restaurant as there is Beef Wellington, jumbo scallops, etc. Our group of 4 had sea bass, scallops and 2 pappardelle dishes. All were outstanding as were our arugula and Farmers Market salads. Very good wine list. A special shout out to the dessert menu! If you haven’t been then you’ve missed one of the better neighborhood restaurants in San Diego. The owner/chef came by our table to welcome us and introduce himself. He came by later for feedback on our meals as well. A class act!
The food was amazing and the service was excellent. I shall be back soon!
Very nice traditional Italian
Our waiter Nicholas was on Q” in assisting us what to
Order to our preferences . Thank you
The entire staff & especially Owner was very receptive .
A must if you are visiting San Diego or living in San Diego.
We are from NYC & have been to hundreds of restaurant establishments.
The Red Door is top shelf.
Looking forward to dine here again next time
Back in town .
The Red Door never disappoints!! Celebrated @seferrara tonight for her birthday and enjoyed everything.
From the second we walked in, we were greeted with warmth, treated with kindness and served wonderful food. Chef Luciano cares and it is apparent and appreciated!
Roasted Beets and Burrata, Wild Alaska Salmon with Roasted Vegetables, Slow braised beef pappardelle, dessert and coffee.
You feel at home. ❤
Nicholas was an amazing server & the food was amazing
the chief came out to our table to greet us and tell us more about the menu and we had amazing evening. I will be going again soon.
This place was outstanding. We had never heard of it before but saw great reviews and figured it was worth a try and it was even better than I expected. The servers were amazing and honestly better than a lot I have had at 5 star restaurants. The owner came around to check on us and the food tasted fresh and home made. I will be coming back for sure and recommending this place to everyone I know.
Everything was absolutely perfect. Luciano made everything to perfection
Our party had a wonderful experience at The Red Door. Our server, Anthony, was very welcoming and helpful as were all the other staff members. All the food was great! We enjoyed the fried calamari and kale appetizer. Calamari was fresh and fried perfectly, and the kale chips were super light and had a great flavor. The entrees of eggplant parmesan, beef Wellington, and orecchiette were superb and portions were a nice size. During the meal the owner/chef stopped by our table to say hello and ask about our meal. The mini banana cream pie was a perfect dessert. An all around great experience - we’ll be returning.
The best sword fish I've ever had.
It was perfectly cooked and as moist as I've ever had. The risotto match was a great.
Wow. Just wow.
The experience at The Red Door was unlike any I have had at a restaurant for awhile (and that isn’t because of the fact that I haven’t been to a restaurant in awhile - I’m looking at you, COVID). From the staff to the chef to the friendly patrons to the to-die-for meal, our night at this top quality Italian gem made our first day in San Diego truly unforgettable.
We were greeted and seated at a quaint table outside (thanks to the staff member from Minnesota - thanks for the Midwestern charm we love!) and then the friendly Ryan came by to welcome us. He gave us the specials, each one sounding more delicious than the next. Then McKenna came to our table asking if we had any questions or needed suggestions. She was bubbly and fun, easily engaging us in conversation. It was at this point, we had been attended to by three different staff members, all quick to help and very warm. But then, Luciano, the owner and chef himself, came out to greet us and introduce himself. This is when I knew this place was special! Luciano is from Milan and I knew we were in for a treat (Italian food cooked by an Italian chef!). He went through the menu with us, pointing out his personal favorites. I noticed he then went to each and every table to greet his customers. I was so impressed by this personal touch since it made such a difference in our dining experience.
But that wasn’t even the last of it because then the food came and every bite was spectacular. All the food is locally sourced, which was a big selling point, since they take advantage of all the local farmers San Diego has to offer. And when that isn’t possible Luciano makes sure to get the top quality ingredients himself (I know this because he told us about his scallops!). He frequently came back to check on us and make conversation, and you could tell he takes incredible pride in his work and establishment.
We even met a local man who stunned us with his generosity by treating us to a bottle of rose!
This was recommended by a friend who lives ithe area. The service and the meal were all first class. Even the drink menu was fantastic. I would recommend this place as it was an outstanding experience. Event the Executive Chef greeted us and asked about our meal.
Sensational food. Attentive and warm service. A charming neighborhood gem. Highly recommend.
The seared tuna was the perfect temperature and the apps (burrata appetizer and the caesar) melted in our mouths. The chef (who checks in on all the diners) says he chooses only locally sourced seafood and it showed in the freshness. Best meal in San Diego so far.
Mussels were wonderful, waitstaff attentive and friendly!
Called to see if we could move up our reservation and was told no. We arrived to many open tables. The entree we read about was “off the menu”. The “fresh baked bread” written about, we requested, was focaccia about the size of a muffin sliced very thin and was dry. Didn’t taste fresh. Our entrees were hot but lacking in flavor and the short rib (we order at many restaurants) was very fatty, tasted a bit gamey, without the deep rich flavor usually accompanying the dish. “Fresh Parmesan” requested arrived pre grated… surprising. The restaurant is quaint and we really wanted to love our meal but left quite disappointed.
A group of us came to celebrate a birthday last weekend. The food was amazing. Everything that everyone had was outstanding. The service was also fantastic. The chef checked on us throughout the meal and offered recommendations, which was awesome. I don’t live in the area, but will definitely be back!
The food is delicious and the service is excellent. The chef comes around to each table to check on you. Love this place!
Great Italian inspired dishes. Ravioli and vodka sauce was amazing. And don’t sleep on the drinks
We will be back- the food was outstanding!!! This charming restaurant is totally worth it!
Very good food and great atmosphere. Staff need to work on attitude. Overall very good place to visit and eat.
Seafood fettucine could not be improved upon. Outstanding and generous serving. Gnocchi al pesto was very tasty and well prepared, if a bit salty. Sticky toffee pudding was quite interesting and unique, not like in north Wales nor in London, but attractive and quite good. Very nice staff and owner.
Amazing staff that served us a wonderful dinner! We will be back.
I’d visited The Red Door for brunch and was very taken by their offering so I wanted to give the dinner menu a chance. The pasta we ordered was cooked well enough but was a little soft and needed more flavor balance. The tira misu was also a real let down, unfortunately. Also, not really food related but the plate size to table space ratio is way off; the plates need to be smaller or the tables need to get bigger. To end on a good note, the bar drinks are very delicious, I would go back just for the ‘Fancy That’ any day!
The food at The Red Door is amazing, and its quality is phenomenal. Clearly there is a talented chef. The only off-putting experience was that the service was extremely slow and inattentive. We suspect it was just our waiter who may have been new. Otherwise, we look forward to visiting again!
The service and atmosphere were awesome. Our server energetic and passionate about their food and wanted us to have a great experience. He helped us with recommendations and even brought out more crostini! The food and drinks were excellent. I recommend the Beef Wellington!
We will definitely eat here in the future.
Wonderful farm to table. Chef on site and stops by each table to say hello. House made pastas were Devine! Service was outstanding and attentive.
Great place amazing food and service!
