The Red Door
Another visit to The Red Door!! Food five stars. Service five stars. Experience five stars plus. How can the chef/owner handle it? Every plate has his personal touch. You can order any item from the menu or up to a "let the chef surprise me", he always knows what to bring, and I mean "bring" as he always comes out to make sure that what you get is way above what you expected. The restaurant, the bar, the service, the food, the chef, the ............ will make The Red Door your home.
Another amazing meal! Great service and great food! The ribeye is always my favorite. Chef Luciano and his staff will make you feel like you are the only customer in the restaurant. The experience is like having your own personal chef as he is always attentive, always a gentleman, and always brings the most amazing food to your table. My favorite restaurant. Try it once and you will become a regular!!!!
Absolutely love The Red Door! Every choice is exceptional and incredibly flavorful. One of my many favorites is the 18 oz ribeye, which is outstanding, and I cannot resist the Carlsbad mussels with a very rich white wine and tomato broth. Sooo much flavor! Always a great experience with exceptional service and special attention to each table by Chef/Owner Luciano.
Luciano is the best! Always a great experience! Outstanding food and service. Our favorite place to which we return at least a couple of times each week.
The Red Door truly is the best in restaurant in San Diego. They combine incredibly sourced ingredients with phenomenal execution. Every meal I have had there is truly remarkable. Chef Luciano brings out the very best flavors in his treatment of the ingredients he masterfully chooses. I highly recommend you try the rib eye, the lamb shank, the day’s fish selection, and the scallops. Especially try the scallops. I have yet to find a place in San Diego that prepares scallops as perfect as The Red Door does.
The service is very attentive and always excellent as expected. It is always fun and appreciated that Chef Luciano comes out to greet the patrons and he always checks up to see how the dinner is. The bar side is a very fun venue to have your dinner as there usually is excellent live music.
It truly is a great pleasure to frequent this place. I just did the Michelin Star Challenge in London (25 stars in 6 days) and frequently found myself comparing many of the dishes to the dishes Chef Luciano prepares. I wouldn’t doubt that if the Michelin Guide awarded stars in San Diego, there would at least be one star (and probably more) hanging at The Red Door.
Cheers and happy eating!
great food! Conversation difficult: noisy.
The Red Door is always fantastic! When we are in town we try to get there once a week. The food is always delicious and the service is wonderful! All of the servers are very attentive but Kelsea is the best! Chef Luciano always makes us feel at home. Best restaurant in Mission Hills!
We were the only ones there as they need to update google and yelp that they’re open for brunch on Sat! Also they were out of several things. Odd experience but our waiter was very nice and attentive.
The food was amazing , the staff was friendly and the atmosphere was perfect for having a great meal and enjoying conversation with friends.
Our waiter Tony was excellent and accommodated diet restriction with a smile.
I like lunches at the Red door. The one thing I find irritating is that the gentleman who serves, always asks you "How are we doing?" That signifies he is included. Minor issue but is part of his patter.
Excellent place. Never disappoints. Chef is wonderful.
The aged ribeye with the best I’ve had, and nicely couple with the petite rosemary potatoes. The owner chef engaged us on a couple occasions. Very lovely place!
Escaping the cold and snow from Michigan, we felt a visit to San Diego was in order. Had a few recommendations, but depend on OpenTable for most of our experiences, and wanted to hit a good spot away from the downtown core. The Red Door was it. We found ourselves in a bustling European atmosphere. Our server, Mario, was very attentive. Excellent menu, without being overwhelming. We passed on appetizers in order to focus on a main plate. My wife ordered the scallops, which were seared, and finely prepared. I judge an Italian restaurant by its pasta, and The Red Door has an eclectic selection of house made pasta. I opted for the ravioli with tomato and burrata. Excellent. The chef and owner, Luciano, made the rounds of the dining room and chatting with him we learned that he has had worldwide experience. He obviously has dedication and pride in what he does. We ended our meal sharing a “sticky toffee” cake (no doubt a product of Luciano’s time in London) and espresso. We’ll return, because I want to try the beef Wellington, which I would have ordered if it wasn’t Friday and Lent.
Delicious food and great service!
I’ve been traveling and busy in my business so, I haven’t been here for quite a while. And, upon arriving, I was surprised by the new white and black exterior painting. It looks like a new restaurant. Upon entering, I found the inside has been repainted and their same nice servers and stall were still there and it’s very efficiently run by Chef Luciano. I ordered the Arugula salad with pear and it was delicious. Also, I ordered his caramelized and Bourbon Short Robs with Polenta and it was cooked to perfection and it is the best short ribs that I’ve ever tasted in all my frequent travels. I always recommend the Red Door to friends and anyone looking for a good restaurant and a wonderful menu with so many different and delicious entrees to choose from.
Celebrating my employee’s birthday. No special dessert or excitement by the waiter. They were painting the exterior and the smell and fumes were entering the restaurant. The waiter had to call the owner to get permission to close the front door. He was not endearing by any means and then put in a 20% mandatory tip for only 5 of us and said that he couldn’t remove it even though i wanted to decide on my own tip. Nevertheless, the food was excellent!
My friends and I celebrated our birthdays at the Red Door. We were greeted warmly and the service was spot on the entire meal. We shared butternut squash and brie, pork belly macaroni and cheese and bone marrow appetizers and loved every dish. They surprised us with the most decadent chocolate truffles!
I have been to the Red Door many times and it never disappoints!
Ottimo! The Red Door is a gem. Everything about this restaurant - ambience, decor, service and food - makes for one of the best dining experiences we’ve ever had.
We first visited in November 2018 and had such a fantastic meal that we had to dine here again on our recent trip to San Diego. To our surprise, Chef/owner Luciano recognized us and greeted us warmly as soon as we walked in the door. He is genuine in welcoming each of his customers as though they are friends he invited to dinner.
The staff is equal friendly and professional. Our waiter Brian (?) was charming and knowledgeable about the menu and wine list. He helped us make excellent dinner choices with each of us selecting a featured special. My husband had the aged ribeye steak while I had ahi tuna. We both agreed that our meals were among the best we’ve ever had.
We only make it to San Diego about once a year but the Red Door is definitely a place we’ll dine at every visit.
I already recommended this restaurant to my Sister who has lived here 30 plus years. Atmosphere = awesome, food = outstanding, service = perfect attention!!! I totally enjoyed the experience.
The Red Door is a great dining experience. All three of us really enjoyed our meals. Everything was very fresh and made from scratch. The owner/chef, Luciano, made the rounds to every table telling us about how and where he sources his ingredients every day. One note, the portions are quite large, so keep that in mind so that you have room for one of their fabulous desserts.
We went for a belated Valentine's Day dinner and were not disappointed. The food is outstanding. Every part of our meal - from the starter to dessert - was so delicious. We will be back again!
As usual, a special occasion dinner at the Red Door did not disappoint...we brought friends from out of town who were blown away by the culinary scope of the meal. Excellence in every way is what we experienced. Luciano’s pride in his craft is a pleasure to see. His hands on concern for the success of each dinner makes dining here a real treat. Mission Hills finally got the amazing restaurant the neighborhood deserves. We have eaten here many times and will be back again and again....
Our server was amazing and her recommendations were spot on. The food was wonderful and the chef even came out to chat with us. We will definitely return.
Great experience, great food and nice atmosphere. Our server Philip was great. Luciano the owner takes the time to greet his guests table side. Looking forward to the next time.
This restaurant is under new management and it is absolutely fantastic. We had the roasted beet salad and eggplant parmesan. Really this was one of the best meals we have had in ages. The new chef/owner Luciano came around and introduced himself to everyone. This is an unbelievable neighborhood gem and we plan to be frequent visitors.
Chef Luciano always comes out and greets the dining room and takes the time to chat with everyone . The food is always flavorful and fresh . The portions are generous and the bar is well stocked . I can’t recommend this little gem enough ! It is our favorite place to go and always a wonderful experience.
Great dining experience with a cozy atmosphere where it feels like ta
One the best dining experiences our family has had in San Diego in over 20 years. Chef Cibelli personally came out to meet us and explain the dishes. We noticed him come out 3-4 more times to speak to other customers. The food was incredibly fresh, flavorful and not over the top in any way. I had the Wellington for the first time in my life and it was heavenly. The rest of the family all had different pasta dishes and could not believe how great fresh pasta tasted. My wife also had the meatballs on the side and said they and the marinara they came with were so flavorful. We will be back many times as well as refer friends and family. Thx Red Door!
Food consistently excellent served well. Slightly pricy but still enjoy and keep going back. In California tough to make a living in restaurant business.
No music playing. Was creepy quiet.
Food was delicious
It was a lovely experience. The chef even came out to greet us!
Was an awesome place to eat. We ordered 4 different items and were very impressed with them all. The owner came by and encouraged us to try the deserts. Wow the cheesecake and the toffee cake with ice cream was incredible. A must go to place. We will definitely go again
One of our favorite meals ever. Each dish was beautifully prepared, seasonal, fresh, perfectly balanced. Loved the Mission Hills neighborhood and the vibe was cozy and charming, like having dinner at a good friend’s house. Service by Kelsey was stellar and Luciano the owner/chef came to our table to say hello and talk about his specials. Highly recommend and we will definitely be back.
The restaurant is lovely and we were warmly greeted and allowed to linger over drinks, dinner and dessert. The food was amazing and innovative. The chef even came out to talk about what we were ordering. He obviously takes a lot of pride in his menu and changes it often with daily specials. I can't wait to back and introduce other friends to this wonderful experience.
Well as locals in Mission Hills we really wanted to like this place. We had gotten take out before and it was good , but wanted to try it there.
It wasnt very busy and were seated right away, yet we didn’t receive water until another party arrived 15 min after us and got theirs immediately. The drinks menu was separated which didn’t make sense, either and when my bf mentioned to the server she was okay if not sympathetic.
. Took another 10 min for the drink ( which came as a very short pour) for $14 and coffee, which was tepid at best.
The fish tacos my bf ordered were made with salmon. And while that would have been okay for me he was aghast and did mention that fact that 99% of fish tacos are made with a whitefish . Our server, again , was unimpressed. He also ordered a Bloody Mary, took 10 min and was basically a teeny bit of vodka and tomato juice with a celery stalk plopped into it. For $14.
My Aztec Eggs were very cold, and at this point I was tired of it all and got the check and split.
This place is a gem with a great brunch menu.
The staff was so nice and helpful and the food was amazing! Ordered the biscuits and jammies and lox for staters and egg Benedict and omelette of the day for brunch.
