The Pony Room has long been a favorite place for dinner. Lately, in following some less than admirable industry trends, they have quietly begun to add hidden fees which are not disclosed until the bill arrives which is, at best, disingenuous and, at worst, not particularly honest. First the good: The setting and restaurant spaces are gorgeous. Service and food are consistent and remarkable. The staff at Rancho Valencia are some of the best in the business. Starting with check-in, they are upbeat, fun and beautifully trained to make sure that the beginning of the experience sets the right tone for the meal to follow. We have enjoyed outstanding wait staff who, truly, seem to love their product and possess an excellent knowledge of both the food and wines. And the less good: When the bill arrived, we noticed “Up Charges”. When we enquired what they were for (if we understood the explanation correctly), it was for an extra shot in whatever drink was ordered. This added $10 per drink! Several weeks ago, when we questioned this charge, the waiter admitted with some candor that with the particular drink ordered, the charge was there, but due to the size of the glass, the additional liquor was not. This last meal, the drink arrived in its usual compact glass and was only half full!? Up Charge. Another guest asked for her drink to have a “light pour” on the alcohol. Despite barely having one shot of liquor...Up Charge. What is galling is that it is not possible to receive the drink without this stealth charge. It is farcical and deliberately misleading to represent that an item costs a certain amount and, then, jack the actual cost up substantially on the final bill. The reason for this unfortunate practice is transparent as, if the establishment were forthcoming at the outset about actual costs, persons would, likely, elect to reconsider their decisions. Sadly, this marred what was otherwise a superb Summer evening with great food and service.

The indoor room is closed for the summer. It is preferrable for us. We enjoyed the outside patio, but it can be cool. Dress for that. We had the Dover Sole. It was delicious. Enough for two.

We were there for lunch and everything was awesome. Staff very friendly and eager to please. Most delicious food. Enjoyed ourselves very much.

Excellent staff from the hostess who seated us where I had requested to the bartenders to the waiter —- all were friendly and wonderful!
