About this restaurant

  • Great for brunch
  • Good for business meals
  • Charming
Michelin & James Beard-recognized Chef Ricardo Zarate has opened The Hummingbird Ceviche House featuring the Nikkei (Japanese-Peruvian) cuisine he’s best known for. In a charming space with a turquoise-quartz bar, The Hummingbird serves an irresistible bill of fare focused on fresh seafood prepared using traditional Nikkei techniques elevated by California influences. The Los Angeles Times' Laurie Ochoa wrote: "...the service is caring and the food, including an aji amarillo hummus flatbread and sesame-leaf-wrapped shrimp dumplings with tiger's milk aioli, is inventive and delicious. And...the Hummingbird is affordable." Diners delight in Nikkei hand rolls, delectable ceviches, small bites, hot dishes, desserts and house-made Chicha-Morada drinks. The Hummingbird was named one of The Infatuation LA's "Best Restaurants of 2024." NEW: Talented local musicians often stop by to perform on Tuesdays, and Saturdays. Close to Dodger Stadium and perfect for pre-game bites.

We ordered the $75 chef’s choice tasting menu. Hand rolls were fresh and seasoned to perfection. All cuts of fish were sublime and sauces were spicy, tart and everything in between. We were told the menu changes quite a bit. We really enjoyed 4 out of 5 dishes. The salmon tiradito was a standout. They might rethink the squid ink spaghetti dish… it felt a bit out of place in the context of the meal. The picarones and strawberry sorbet desserts were yummy and not overly sweet. We also ordered the maracuya cucumber and chia seed house drink which was extrenely refreshing!

The Hummingbird experience is categorically not "omakase" style, which implies coursed out chef selected dishes. If you go with a group, you will be served family style, not with individual omakase courses. When we asked how this worked, as we weren't expecting this, we were just told the amount of plates we got as a group was based on the experiences we chose, with little further explanation (no clue what would've happened if we had selected different price levels). Additionally, things like handrolls and sushi are incredibly hard to share, so we ended up just picking who got what instead of a little taste of everything, which was a bummer. That being said, the quality of fish was great, and the food was good and worth the value, though it would have been nice to have access to things like straws and knives that make eating easier.

Parking is challenging to find, but when we went at around 5:15pm, we lucked out and found slots on the street. Don't be fooled by all the no-parking signs. We asked some locals who said nobody tickets you if it's a weekend. The place itself is small but cute. Our table area was a little cramped but the staff did everything to make us comfortable. They doted on us like anything! I really appreciated how patient they were with all our questions. The food is exquisite. It all looked like art. This is why I kept taking photos and videos. And it all tasted better than expected. You think you've tasted Peruvian ceviche? No you haven't. You need to try the ceviche that Hummingbird offers...it'll blow your mind. All those layers of flavors and textures make you feel like there's a party in your mouth. They even gave us an extra dish as a thank you for choosing them for our celebration. We were so grateful! I fell in love with the short rib pasta. Those noodles were made in-house and had the perfect level of chewiness. The grilled octopus was tender but crispy in some parts. The crispy ceviche was a revelation - crunchy and soft and sour and umami all at once. The risotto was chock-full of seafood. These folks don't cut corners - they want you full and your tastebuds delighted. We are totally coming back. Even if it was a drive from the Inland Empire, the food and staff were worth it. No other place will make you feel as welcome. This is an excellent addition to Echo Park and should not be gatekept. Do try the $60 per person tasting menu - you will not regret it and you will go home with your pants button undone because you'll feel so full. So much value for money!

The service was amazing, the vibes at the restaurant are great. Just a heads up they only serve nonalcoholic beverages. The food was tasty, but nothing to write home about, but definitely something to experience at least once.
