Ask for the bread, baked to order. Great service, awesome food.
Everything great you need more PR and advertising!!!
Unique, delicious food, excellent service and one of the best ocean views in La Jolla!
Awesome food and excellent setting, service.
Great service, good food portions and a great view.
The Hake was recommended to me by a shop owner of Ascot. He needs a pat on the back! We loved the Hake. One of the best meals on our short jaunt!
La Jolla is gorgeous and I wish we could have been there eating at the table next to the ocean during the day.
Our server was fabulous and lead us through our choices with each selection. So helpful!
I wanted to go back again the next night. It is a STAR in my book.
I made a reservation a month prior to ensure the five of us girls would get a table with a view & when those tables were all filled upon our arrival, the server said those were “first come first serve & a reservation didn’t matter because people never show up”. We were on time by the way. Had to ask for bread.... just goes down hill from there as you can imagine. Food was good but with that kind of attitude, skip this place..... probably why those tables by the window were the only ones filled. I feel sorry for their chef.
The service was excellent. Favorite meal was the ink squid pasta, hearty and tasty. Surprisingly the rib eye was cooked perfectly at medium rare, delicious, juicy and tender for a seafood restaurant. Definitely dinning at The Hake again.
Made reservations for 7:30pm on 2/17/18. We got there at 7:25pm and the host and hostess both told me it was a couple minutes wait. I asked the hostess if we could be sat by a window and she told me she'd check. Then she comes back and says that a window seat is about a 15 minute wait. I asked her "so if I choose to not get a window seat we can be sat right now at another table?" She says "yes" so I told her that's fine, we'd take a table right now. So she tells me she'll get a table ready and come back for us. 30 mins pass, other people are getting upset because they're "so backed up" and people are literally saying "fxck this" and going to Donovan's next door. Meanwhile I'm still waiting and finally catch the hostess again and ask her to what happened to being sat right away for passing up a window seat? She tells me she isn't allowed to seat people right now (tf?). By the time we are finally sat, it's 8:30pm (we would've left but everywhere nearby also had a long wait) and the dining room barely has anyone in it! There were like 15 empty tables! I looked at the host and mentioned all the empty tables and he actually told me "a lot of people just left" which was BS because I sat at the front door for an hour and only 10 people left the entire time. Then after we finally had dinner the bill came and they didn't even try to mitigate the problem by taking anything off the bill. Food was good and our waiter was alright... but the host and hostess bullshxtting us drops my rating all the way down. Thanks for starving us even though we had reservations. We don't plan on ever coming back.
Three of us were visiting La Jolla from, LA, SAN Francisco and Victoria BC and all of us enjoyed our dinner at the Hake! The food, the atmosphere and the service was fantastic! We will all recommend this restaurant to all our friends.
The food was decent, two of the dishes were good but the day's special and ravioli not good. The service was slow (they may have been understaffed that night), it took almost an hour to get our appetizers and the server was not really engaged with the table. We had to ask twice for our drinks and at the end of the meal, we requested the dessert menu that never came. So we opted to get ice cream at a different place. Overall, not worth $300 for 4 people.
I did not get sat until 35 minutes after the reservation time, only after I asked about the status of the table. Once seated, it took another 10 minutes to see a server. We told him that we were now in a rush. One of the hosts was gracious about the situation and comp'ed the drinks we had while we were waiting.
The food was very slow coming out and we eventually had to cancel our after-dinner plans. After the food arrived, no one came to check on us or see how the food was. This is important because the sea bass was over-cooked and needed salt. Once we told our server this, he said that it would take about 15-20 minutes to get a new entree because the kitchen was backed up. We told him that we were still in a rush and picked a dish that was likely to not take as long. I finshed my entree (short ribs) as it was getting cold. The new dish (squid ink pasta) came out, but still no manager visit. When the bill came, the new (replacement entree) was on the bill, along with the small plate we had before the entree issues started. We asked to see a manager because we had still yet to see anyone other than our server and the waiter assistants who brought the water and bread.
It was very clear that this was not an isolated incident, as the table next to us resorted to raising their hands (like in a classroom) in order to get anyone's attention.
Overall, for the poor quality of service and lack of attentiveness when the food was served, I would strongly recommend anyone to go anywhere else. This area of La Jolla has a lot of options, and The Hake should be at the bottom of your list.
Everything was absolutely amazing. I had not had a meal this tasty in a long time.
Food was excellent. Had tuna carnitas (highly recommend), squid ink seafood pasta, the ribeye, and bartender's choice drinks. Service was good without being "hover-y" and the ambience was low lit and romantic. Little expensive but I think well worth it. Expect to spend around 120-160$ with drinks.

Restaurant advertised as Mexican/Mediterranean, but nothing on the (limited) menu came close. Asked for salmon to be cooked though and it definitely was not. One of the worst dining experiences ever
The food was pretty good but not great.
Nice place. I hadn't been there since the remodel. It now has a very nice dining area in addition to the bar and bar seating area. Beautiful views if by the windows - reserve that. Good menu. Had the salmon with blue crab on top - but crab turned out to be $8 extra. My date couldn't decide between two wines, so they brought tasters of each for her. That was a nice touch.
It was a Saturday evening around 7:30, and the place was not busy at all. I thought that was odd, but maybe it's just because people don't know about it. Check it out. Worth the visit.
Just ok - nothing to write home about!
Food was very hit or miss - chef/menu has been changed. Service was one of the worst we have experienced in upscale restaurant.
Very noisy like an echo chamber. Service was slow and uncoordinated with entree’s arriving without accompanying drinks , utensils and the bread arrived after we finished our meal !
Our waiter was apologetic but obviously not a professional. Can’t recommend this place due to value to services rendered issues.
The food is outstanding, no doubt about it. The service, no so. For the type of restaurant, I expected better. Our main course took a long time to arrive, even though ours was only one of 2-3 total tables in the place. The waitress kept telling us "it's coming." We ordered dessert, which was also great. We ordered coffee but no cream or milk was served. It took a while for any waiter to come near our table to get this and it took telling two different wait staff to get the milk. Could do better with service. I was very surprised by this.
We were there to celebrate a 60th birthday with friends from out of town. With so many restaurants to choose from in La Jolla, and this being a special occasion, we wanted just the right place: food, atmosphere, service, view... The Hake didn't disappoint - it was amazing. Our friends raved about it that evening and woke up raving about it again the next morning. It was a great success. I would recommend this place for a special occasion, romantic date night or just craft cocktails and appetizers.
We will never return again. Very sad and disappointing. I defended the waiter to the until table while everything became a mess. Then my husband walked into our waiter outside smoking a cigarette. The bused tables in an empty restaurant before refilling our waters, drinks and forgot everything. It took us 2.5 hours to get entrees. We have a baby...so by the end we had to refuse a birthday dessert as it took three hours to get to that point. Manager did a terrible job handling the issues- yes he competed a portion of the meal but in the end, I will never return and it’s very sad because this was my favorite restaurant.
Had the white sea bass for three which sounded really cool but it was undercooked and wasn't served, or even accompanied by serving utensils. Had two different servers. Niether of which knew the other existed.
The food was nicely presented and tasty. However, it left me with a stomach ache which started soon after we left and persisted for a couple of days. Also, service was quite slow despite a non-busy Saturday night - we received our appetizers before our drinks. And they served a double expresso instead of the regular one I had ordered.
Very disappointed - had requested view table for special occasion and though one such table sat empty for half hour right by our table - it was not offered to us. Service was horrible by waitress. Not sure if she was busy but she didn't explain that to us. Rather, we had to request pepper and other things from busboys and host. Small amount of beers on tap and of those only a few available. Menu items as stated not available when we ordered. Caesar salad seemed to have come from a package just like the ones sold at grocery store. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone and will not return.
we have been there before and it was nice
went there-the place was empty and the service was slow and the portions teeny-the food was mediocre but for the price not good
Almost. On a street with a low ot of competition for views and sea food, Hake is fine, not great. Dishes over spiced unnecessarily. Ambiance ok but could be far better.
The Hake was one of my very favorite San Diego/la Jolla restaurants, but it has really slipped since the previous Chef Aarti Sanghavi left. Her amazing flavors and fabulous menu is a thing of the past, if my dinner the other night was any indication of the new regime. I ordered 3 starters. One was OK and two were very disappointing. The other two people with whom I was dining concurred that it was not a good experience. I hope for the restaurant’s sake it was just an off night, but I won’t be going back.
Average, but good location. Otherwise unexceptional.
We were a party of four for dinner on Saturday evening and were looking forward to checking out this place due to the seafood options.
Just to mention the two items I ordered: Caesar salad and mussels for dinner. The Caesar salad was listed somehow (I forget exactly) that it was not a conventional Caesar. I think they need to rename this salad entirely. I, personally, did not like it, although one in our party said it was fine. The mussels were inedible. The broth tasted like the chef did not cook off the wine and was bitter. By the time our server actually came to check in on me, I was done.
Two in our party ordered the soft shell crab tacos/tostadas and one had the grilled octopus, which they enjoyed.
First, I will say it was the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend. The restaurant was just about empty, just two other tables had anyone.
Lastly, we ordered a bottle of the Chateau Montelena, Chardonnay - listed on the wine list at an '01 at $78/bottle. We assumed it was listed wrong. Our server did return and update us that it was actually a '14 but confirmed the price was correct. Yet, when we received our bill, they not only charged us $94/bottle, but also charged us a $20 corkage fee on top of it. It took quite a bit of time for this to get adjusted and we were informed this was a 'computer' issue...still not sure what to believe, but in our opinion, very serious question of 'bait and switch'.
In any case, I say go for the Chateau Montelena Chardonnay while they have it, as it is a great price. Otherwise, we were disappointed.
FANTASTIC in every aspect. Food was delicious and beautifully presented. Service was very attentive without being intrusive. Gorgeous view
Not impressed with anything . Food just OK. Too expensive for the multiple plate type dining.
The restaurant had 3 tables all evening so others must not be impressed as well.
First and last visit for this local.
Excellent Seabass & Steak. Great service.
Very nice location but food was not worth how much we paid. Great drinks and service
Excellent and creative menu. Food and drinks are A+. Great location and view. Outstanding service.
The food was spectacular, as was the wine. Service was friendly, attentive, and unobtrusive! Perfect!
The Hake has a rather unique outlook for a gourmet, high end restaurant. The dishes are creative and they promote sharing of the dishes. This allows the guests to experience many different flavors, textures and food types. The prices address not cheap, but for the type of dishes presented and created this location is well worth the trip. In addition the service was impeccable. Definitely a dining experience worth having.
Seabass was overcooked but pasta dish was delicious. The service was efficient and attentive
