Tangata (or "mankind" in the tribal Maori language of New Zealand) features Southwestern decor enclosed by glass walls and a ceiling framed with stuccoed beams and large windows to allow ambient light to illuminate the main dining area. Located in the Bowers Museum's mission-style courtyard, the 160-seat restaurant dedicates half of its available seating to al fresco dining on a large patio area. The patio area opens into the mission-style courtyard that is perfect for romantic weddings or evening receptions. Tangata is perfect for social or business luncheons, dinners and gatherings. Our sophisticated Californian cuisine and impeccable service will impress your guests. Located just off the 5 freeway, we also offer convenient parking. The Bowers Museum adds a twinkle to romantic weddings, banquets and receptions under the stars with its lush mission-style courtyard, replete with romantic fountains, year-round flowers, an attractive tiered patio and Spanish-style balcony.

Ate at Tangata after going to the Shackleton exhibition and seeing the rest of the museum. We chose 2:00 because we figured it would be less crowded. It was. It was also out of the wheat beer that was listed on the menu and the cabernet sauvignon that was listed. That said, I had the Little Gem Chicken Caesar Salad and my husband had the grilled Black Angus Beef Burger and we were very pleased with them.

The service was terrific, our waiter was professional and funny at the same time. The food was really my cup of tea: the portions were not huge (a good thing) and I love a good brunch menu. I had the huevos rancheros which were built on crispy tortillas and featured a not spicy, citrus tasting tomato salsa. I plan to go again.

The menu in the restaurant was different than the one shown on Tangata's web site.

The restaurant is great for dining during a day at the Bowers Museum. The food is always good and the place is very pretty. However, I've been there several times and each time the service was really not good...extremely slow. This past visit we had to keep flagging someone down for anything we needed since the waiter didn't check in with us at all, even though he kept walking by our table. On my last visit we waited over an hour for food and one member of our group had to leave before her lunch arrived. Someone went in the kitchen, and quickly boxed up her meal while she paid for it so she could go. Still...I would recommend Tangata for your day at the museum.

The food and service were very good. Ambiance is not so good. It is very noisy because the acoustics are terrible, not because it is a 'lively bar scene.'

After a visit to the Shackleton exhibit, our group of 9 had lunch in the museum restaurant. The convenience made it the logical choice. We made reservations through Open Table for 7 originally but our group expanded to 9. Open Table was unable to change the reservation to accommodate the additional guests but a call to the restaurant directly took care of that. They were very accommodating and willing to change the reservation. Menu had enough variety for everyone. The soup of the day (tomato) sounded great, but was a little watery and not much taste. We were given the brunch menu that offered lunch and breakfast selections. NIce afternoon with friends!

We have eaten at this restaurant several times in the past few years due to being at the Bowers Museum and our schedule for a lot of the museums events. However I find the service lacking in that we have had to wait several times for our food to come out when other people received there food before us when we had ordered before them. We did speak to the manager about this and were given some excuse and a free dessert. The waiter was not very informative with letting us know things that were not on the menu but were available as specials, he was very forgetful and we had to ask for things every step of the way. Additionally the tables are not cleaned off as often as they should be.

Tangata is a great lunch spot for central OF.
Nice atmosphere and not fast food. Its a nice little escape.
The potato soup is wonderful!
Bring a sweater, though. It can be a bit chilly.

My friend and I ordered ordered hamburgers-we asked that they be cooked to medium-well done. The table next to us was seated after we were, ordered after we did and received their food before we did. When our burgers arrived, they were seared on the outside and raw on the inside. Service was slow-we were not offered a refill on the coffee we had with our dessert. In spite of a 20% reduction in our bill, due to our complaint about the burger, we will not be returning to Tangata. We had an experience with slow/inept service prior to this trip...
