What Insiders Are Saying
With Spartina, Melrose finally got what it always needed. A neighborhood pasta joint that never takes itself too seriously.
This is my favorite restaurant in Los Angeles - if I could eat here every night, I would. I love the food - the freshness and flavors of the pasta dishes, the delicious pizzas, the exquisite vegetable dishes and unique salads, and the wonderful deserts. I cannot recommend it more highly!
Poor service. Waiters and waitress looked like they hate their lives.
Great food and server was very professional. Will definitely go back.
Outstanding food and phenomenal service. Consistently excellent.
Food wasn’t hot but all else was good.
The atmosphere at Spartina takes you miles away from LA if you dine outside. The staff is friendly and engaged. The food very interesting and one of my favorite casual LA places. The Chef, Steven Kalt, is a terrific craftsman and a great gentleman. Take the time to meet him and Freddie, who runs the front of the house.
Pistachio pesto was fantastic, as were the squash blossoms.
Our favorite neighborhood spott
We love the food and the atmosphere and the service at chef/owner Steven’s fabulous restaurant. The drinks are also great and the appetizers and entrees are all fantastic. Check out Monday night when happy hour is all evening. Beautiful outdoor patio as well.
I consider SPARTINA a go-to for unique italian food here in Los Angeles. I grew up in Boston and it's always tough to find delicious and authentic Italian cuisine with a twist. We love this place.
Dining al fresco is alway great at Spartina.
The food and service were lovely.
The Calabrian Chicken Sandwich was awesome - the perfect blend of sweet, spice and crunchy fried chicken. This is our local date nite spot just down the street. We’ll be back.
Rude hostess! Ruined the experience. Asked for outside dining, as we made the reservation through Open Table two days before the date we arrived - she said she had reservations for those tables - which was not an option when we reserved. Then put us in a nice corner table, only to send the other hostess back over to move us one table over - not as nice a table (not as romantic) saying it was a mistake AFTER we had already been seated. That corner table was reserved, too, the other hostess had been told by the one out front. We ate for an hour or so - no one EVER took the corner table we were moved off of. Very rude and made my wife feel like a second class patron. We will not be returning.
Overall, pleased with experience at Spartina. Portion sizes are on the small end for the cost, but everything was tasty and our service was superb.
Our server was amazing!!! She made it great oh and the food
Really great place. I highly recommend the farinata, faro salad and roasted chicken. Yum!! Our only complaint was that as chardonnay drinkers we had to pay $20 a glass which is pretty outrageous. I think a less pricey option in addition to the one they have on their menu would be great.
This was our first time at Spartina. From the service to the ambiance and the food, our experience was amazing and we will definitely be back.
We had a fantastic meal with wonderful service and sitting outside only added to our beautiful evening.
All of the appetizers - and we had many - were delicious as well as the entrées. Especially recommend the grilled avocado, chickpea pie type thing and the pastors. Also had wonderful drinks.
I wanted to like Spartina - the outdoor patio is very nice, but the food, service, and value is so off the mark. The happy hour menu looked great, but came up so short. The best part was the pizza and even that was disappointing. The worst part was the arugula salad - it was barely dressed, we were pretty much eating dry arugula. The pasta was fine, but nothing to write home about. The meatballs were lukewarm... Our server was cold and unattentive. And to top it all off, as we were walking out, we spotted two cockroaches running through the patio area. Needless to say, we won't be back.
I was super excited to come back here for my birthday but the food was not nearly as good as I remembered from
a business meal here last year. The broccoli we ordered was way over seasoned and lemon-ed to the point of being sour and inedible. My boyfriend’s pizza was bland and the wine I wanted was out of stock. Then the tiramisu was frozen in the middle? and watery. Ah this was really a bummer, and it was supposed to be a special occasion. No one was rude and the place is beautiful, but the food was a real let down.
The food and service was exceptional. We always enjoy dinner at Spartina. Still a wonderful experience.
I really love spartina— it is the perfect upscale casual dining experience. They have an amazing amount of starters all of which are excellent. I only eat their proteins which are also excellent. The one thing I wish is that they would add either more proteins to menu or have more specials including proteins. I have never tried their pizza or pasta. But I’m sure they are excellent, too. Overall I love to go here and sit on the patio to have a cocktail and a glass of wine with dinner. Excellent dining experience.
This is our neighborhood spot and we always like taking outta town visitors. All the Food was great as usual. Had a small misstep on getting our complete order. Two of our dishes arrived and we asked - a couple times - about the 3rd dish. It finally arrived after everyone else was finished. We had it boxed to go. Hopefully this was a onetime hiccup. Don’t want to have to find another local neighborhood spot.
I have dined here on a few occasions considering how close Spartina is to where I live. I like the menu a lot and probably prefer their dinner to brunch. I find the food good but not spectacular. I like the ambiance especially their outdoor space.
Service however is never consistent and not the best. On this occassion the hostess was also being used for other duties so it took a few minutes to get seated although there was ample space available.
Initially there were no glasses for water and then only I was served even though the table setting was for 2 and I expressed that as well. A couple more snafus, being served appetizers (bombolini and fries) to share but having no plates. Going to get the plates ourselves then having the server pick up our plates even though we were using them. Delay in cocktails due to service being overextended.... etc.
Food arrived in a timely manner and as I said was good. I had the beef belly hash and my date had the chicken salad. I enjoyed my drink when it arrived but felt less relaxed due to the initial snafus.
The bartender needs to make a basic Bloody Mary better. The price on the Burrata starter dish was a bit high for such a small portion. The price for the fresh squeezed orange juice was way too high for the size glass in cane in. Overall, the service was good and the food delicious.
I love Spartina, especially on a Friday night and it did not disappoint. I liked seeing some new things on the menu, since I have had most of the items already. It was delicious and our server was fantastic.
Wonderful reunion experience with old college friends!
When you can't get into Jon & Vinny's or don't feel like trying to get in to Jon & Vinny's, this is the place. Plus, most of their menu is 1/2 price (including wine) between 5:30-7, and all day Monday) which is insane.
The service was not great...at one point, my friend got up from the table to ask another waiter for salt and pepper. We had two different servers during the course of our meal and neither were very attentive. It wasn’t the servers’ fault though, they were understaffed and the servers had too much real estate to cover.
The meal was expensive and it was tasty but not exceptional, by any means.
I love this place. Service was a little slow the last time, but the food and ambience are always excellent. Definitely will go back. Haven’t checked out the happy hour yet, but have heard great things!
Great food, mediocre service on this visit. Maybe understaffed.
Love Spartina. Their dinner is great but honestly a favorite of my group for brunch. Never a wait, easy to get a reservation, cool ambiance and reasonable prices. I usually hate going out for brunch but if it’s Spartina I’m always game!
Great food. A bit of a slow service
Phenomenal Food. Wine was amazing. The decor and ambiance is really very affable and low key. Every course was an exceptional experience
Happy hour all evening on Mondays is a great deal. Short rib pasta was best dish.
My wife and I went here for our anniversary. It's a nice restaurant with attentive staff. Here's the rundown on the food. We had the Chickpea Farinata off the Happy Hour menu. It was the dullest dish of the night. It was just cumin-flavored dough. The avocado was nice but added little. Then we had their famous Romanesco Cauliflower. That was really good though it could have used a few more raisins and perhaps a bit more salty anchovy. For main dishes, I had the Bucatini Carbonara which was good but could have been great if they had cooked the pasta a little longer. I love al dente but I couldn't even twirl this on my fork it was so stiff! My wife had the Trenette with Octopus and Bone Marrow. Her only complaint was she wished the pieces of octopus were bigger. We don't usually do dessert but the choices rose above the usual chocolate lava cake and such so we went with it. My wife had the Affogato espresso and vanilla gelato and I had the Walnut Pie which was so buttery and good.
Birthday brunch and our waitress was fun! If only I could recall her name :(
Spartina is a wonderful neighborhood gem. It’s Italian with the chefs own twist on many pastas and pizza dishes. There are many places around LA like this but they don’t succeed because the chefs are simply not as talented. The flavors are unique but still familiar and wonderful. My dad who is a pretty conservative eater was in town and even he couldn’t deny the outstanding flavor of the Rigatoni with shrimp. I had the skirt steak which was perfectly charred and seasoned. Do yourself a favor though and sit outside if you can. Inside is very pretty but tables are too close and it’s very loud due to open kitchen. Outside there are heat lamps and it’s peaceful.
Great good, great space. Pastas as very good.
Amazing food and service! And the Aperol Spritz was so good!! Highly recommend the burrata ravioli!
