What Insiders Are Saying
With Spartina, Melrose finally got what it always needed. A neighborhood pasta joint that never takes itself too seriously.
Ambience was wonderful and staff was friendly. Not sure if it was an off day in the kitchen, but I had to send my eggs back three times and finally gave up, after repeatedly asking for my eggs to be fried hard, and receiving them back over easy.
We have been to Spartina a few times and the food is always top notch and reasonably priced! It’s one of the best Italian restaurants in Los Angeles in my view.
We have been to Spartina several times now and the food and service have been top notch every single time (something even the best restaurants struggle with). The bartenders use fresh fruit juices in their cocktails and the pastas are made by hand at the restaurant. Huge selection of small plates with so many great and tasty options, including many vegetable dishes. Perfect place for a casual, but super delicious meal. Highly recommended!
We went to L.A. to visit our oldest and see a college football game. Spartina was on our "try list" from watching the chef on a Food Network show. It was fantastic! The people were wonderful. We were greeted by the host-partner in the restaurant. We were seated outside with space from other diners in a comfortable setting. The food was well thought out and delicious. The romana (salmon, grilled polenta, hollandaise and two soft boiled eggs) was amazing! It was also offered two different ways instead of the salmon. The beef belly hash, so simple, so good. I had asked about two different breakfast entrees. I ordered one and surprisingly the other was brought to the table, gratis. The server respected our privacy but stayed enough to listen. The partner came out and gave his time and attention as only an interested owner would do. Yes, there are bottomless mimosas, because the bartender served our table. I was driving and drank iced tea so this review is 100%.
When booking on open table, the app specifies which seating is available for your reservation (outdoor, standard, bar) and then you choose which you want. When checking in at the restaurant, I was told that they don't guarantee your choice. I booked standard on a cold night and was told only outdoor was available. It's the old bait and switch. Definitely would not have gone had I known this.
Great place for first date, even comped a dish I ordered mistakenly because my date didn't eat pork. Great food and vibe.
Loves the food. The octopus was probably the best thing on the menu and the hardest one to pull off.
Place is loud , but worthy
My 2nd time here. Great food and friendly service. The tables are a little too close to each other for my taste.
The burrata ravioli was amazing I’ll be returning
Food was very delicious, service was good and the drinks were very well made. I loved the ambience and the whole experience was fun. I am glad we went on a monday for the pasta specials, it can add up.
It’s my favorite local restaurant! Food & service GREAT!
Food was okay. There were out of a few key brunch ingredients the day we visited.
The food was good, but definitely not worth the high prices. Service was very slow, despite the restaurant being almost empty.
Fun low key yet high quality food!!
Great food in a great seating!
Our favorite neighborhood restaurant. The service is bar none, cocktail and wine list is very complete and the food meets the highest of LA standards. The outdoor seating area is the best in the city even though Melrose Ave is just over the ficus hedge. Quiet and intimate with understated elegance. The seat cushions could be a little thicker, but truly our only complaint.
Great service & wonderful food. We especially loved the white & black garlic spaghettini! We just wish they were open for lunch, too!
My favorite place for pizza and carbonara place is very nice as well
Leah is an outstanding wait person. She made the evening very, very enjoyable. Great service all the way around.
Waitress did not know the wine list or the menu contents.
As always it was a great time. I am an active Evangelist for Spartina!
Overall was ok, but too pricey and overrated for what they offer. It is definetely not a good italian restaurant (I am italian!). I order a Pizza and it was not very good. My friends order pasta, it was overcooked and too oily. The best food was the only non italian food (the fried chicken sandwich). The drinks were terrible, except for the beer and water.
The place is beautiful tough.
The service started good but at certain point it became very impolite.
fantastic pasta and pizza as always, combined with a relaxed atmosphere and excellent service. Love this place.
Food is amazing, as always!!
The vibe inside is chic and cool, however we sat on the picturesque patio because it was such a beautiful night. Attentive & knowledgeable service and the food was delicious! We shared several appetizers and entrees and every bite was savored! Can’t wait to go back!
Had a lovely time with a group gathering at Spartina. Only my 2nd time there and the service and food were exceptional. Even got to meet the chef, so it was beyond a special occasion! Highly recommend this spot as the perfect mid city dining spot for pulling together both East and West side friends. Food is diverse and delish, something for everyone. We had a vegan, 4 autoimmune folks and someone with a dairy allergy and we all ate well and enjoyed the variety.
The place is good. Could be great. The ambiance is great. The hostess is very good. The waitstaff seemed a bit off. Couldn’t really figure out who our waiter was. But that’s ok. So what’s wrong ? The highly praised pastas are just ok. Not great. And for almost 400$ for 4 people inc. tips and drinks - the food just doesn’t get there. The pizza is meh. Flavorless. The pasta, again, was not great. I wanted it to be. The garlic pasta had all the chances to be amazing but just was not. The salads were very good. It’s ok. It’s fine ...
The food was excellent. The outdoor seating was not our original choice, but turned out to be lovely; and the overwhelmingly loud indoor area was very off-putting. The service started out OK, but got worse and worse as the evening progressed. When we hadn't received our entrees after an hour, we asked the waitress. She made an excuse that there was a large party inside that was slowing down the service. She should have approached us with that information long before we had to wave her down. Then, in the midst of still waiting for our entrees, she approached the table to tell us she was leaving and turning our service over to a new waiter. We asked for the manager who said that our food was coming out in 5 minutes - now an 1 and 1/2 hours since we arrived. And it did come when he promised. He offered to take our drinks off the bill - but guess what wasn't taken off until we complained again. Then just as we were about to leave, the manager came over with three complimentary desserts. They were very good - all of the food was! But it wasn't enough to make us want to come back any time soon.
The staff at Spartina make you feel like home. The aesthetic is beautiful, and the food is DELICIOUS. Always excited for an opportunity to go back.
Decent food. Bad service. Expensive for what it is.
Great reception and service from the moment we arrived.
Noise level very acceptable ( we were on the patio).
Highly recommend anytime of day.
Everything is always amazing
Very nice neighborhood gem. Food is always good. The burger on the happy hour menu is great. Just needs some fries with it.
Delicious. Flat out delicious everything.
The service was a little slow, but the food was quite good for the price. They have happy hour every day. The patio view was beautiful but the noise from the street was pretty loud and it got a bit buggy by the bushes. Overall, I'd recommend asking for seats closer to the front doors, or eat inside if it's hot.
Spartina is my favorite LA restaurant. A quick glance at the menu might fool you into thinking this is just high end Italian. But every dish has dimensions. The pepperoni pizza with honey and chili oil is a perfect example. You think you know what you’re getting, but the first bite tells you this is thoughtful creative cuisine. The grilled octopus appetizer, something I would never order, is amazing - a tender delivery of the essence of the grill. Totally unexpected. Everything is good. Let your waiter recommend something and prepare for a wonderful surprise. Also, go off menu for a cocktail and order the white lion.
We enjoyed our date night here. Unfortunately our dinner was slightly delayed due to the fact that I told the server I was gluten-free and she did not put in my meal as gf. Glad I asked to double check or I would have been very sad later. We had to walk really fast to our next reservation since it was delayed. Other than that, the food was excellent and we will probably go back sometime.
Do not go! None of the food was very good. Complimentary beans were dry, pizza was dry, Carbonara was some of the worst prepared Carbonara I've ever had. It would have been better at your local pizza joint. Wait staff not knowledgable about wines. The only nice part was the host. If our meal was any indication, prices should be cut in half or the restaurant needs to go! It's a mediocre corner pizza place masquerading as fine dining..... Tsk tsk.
Our server was fantastic and the host was so much fun! The food was absolutely delicious!
