We were very disappointed in the food, there were five of us. The food was dry, tasteless, not as advertised and seemed reheated. The steak was terrible and very high priced. It took a really long time to get our drinks or food. We will not be returning

We would have loved to have had brunch at Southern Stone, where we have gone many times before, but when we arrived at 1:20 for our 1:30 reservation, the manager told us the kitchen was closing and they were not seating any more people. (The posted brunch hours end at 2:30). She suggested a couple of other places to go--and we had a good brunch at Feast next door--but the point of having a reservation system is to ensure that things like this do no happen.

All was good until we got the check, it contained a kitchen service charge. When I asked about it, it was a tip for the kitchen service according to the white staff they still have to tip out at the end of the night and share their tips with the kitchen service but they get this fee. Also, this is a perfect example of why restaurants should charge what they need to charge, and do away with this tipping nonsense, the worst part is they don’t share this till after you’re done most restaurants and have goofy charges like this. Have signs up that say hey we do this next time in Bloomington will have to think twice.

We waited in line for a good 10 minutes to get seated bc they have 1 person at the hostess desk and 1 line for ppl with and without reservations. When we were finally seated we waited at the table for a good 20 minutes and no one came up to us to take our order. My husband went to the hostess stand to ask for a server and they said someone would be by in a minute. They were not that busy. No one came by for another 5-8 minutes and we got up and walked out. The hostess saw us walking out and said nothing. Not sure how they stay in business.

Great place for brunch. Service was great, food served quickly and was delicious. My sons both thought the biscuits and gravy were the best they have ever had. The grits were also stellar. Will definitely return!

Service was very slow. I’m guessing they were short staffed in the kitchen. Lots of open tables, and it took over an hour for food and all food did not come out together when it finally came out.

We did not have a good experience. Food was just ok and service was lousy. Waited over an hour for our order to arrive. We went for a late lunch and the place was empty so not quite sure why we had such poor service. Oh and the food arrived cold. That being said, we’ve been here for dinner and it was great.

We waited 20 minutes before someone came to our table to take our drink order (we even flagged a waitress down and she said she would be right back but she never even asked why we were flagging her). Someone eventually came to the table and apologized and took our order. At the end of the meal we weren’t even offered dessert. I took forever to pay the check as well. The food however was delicious. Generous portions, very tasty. The wait to receive our food was completely reasonable. The kitchen staff was on top of things at least. The restaurant was not busy the night we were there. Plenty of open tables. I don’t know if they were understaffed, but it doesn’t excuse the miscommunication and to be honest, there was some rudeness. The hostess was not friendly and the initial waitress we flagged (or tried to flag) was not very friendly either - I read reviews that stated similar things before I booked but I was hoping those were isolated incidents. The food was really good (and the menu had great options) - but there are other parts to running a restaurant - the service element was lacking.

I have always loved Southern Stone and really hate that my experience resulted in this rating. We were early diners and I was a bringing a friend for their first experience. It wasn't good...The waitress was inattentive and very slow--she had only 3 tables during the duration of our dining experience. She just seemed "unplugged" or distracted/unsure. It may be that she simply needs more training but, for the bill we paid, it was a disappointing evening. We had drinks, entree and dessert. I hope things improve because I really love this restaurant and have been a regular customer.

Server didn’t speak to us for about 15 minutes - no water, no menus. Then manager came and apologized and brought a server over. The food was good came in a timely manner but because of our original wait the server told us she’d bring us a dessert menu and comp our dessert. Instead of doing that, she brought us two pieces of peanut butter pie in to go boxes without asking us what we would like or if we had any allergies or if we’d like to enjoy our dessert at the table after the meal. The restaurant wasn’t that busy so these lapses in service were surprising.

First time here after having a student at IU the previous three years. Why did we wait so long to come here?!?! The food was outstanding. The space very cool. Service was spot on. Excellent menu and all around great restaurant! We will return for sure!

Service was a bit slow but our waiter was very friendly and responsive. The food was very salty and we were quite disappointed since we have been there before. We were a group of eight and about two out of eight of us was satisfied with our meal. We probably won’t be returning anytime in the near future.

Wait staff very nice and accommodating to request. The cornbread was wonderful but small when sharing it as an appetizer with total of 6 people, we each received one triangle of a piece. The crab cake was huge with actual crab meat seen, and filling, I was only able to eat one as it comes with two.

We went to IU’s graduation expecting southern food on their normal menu. Instead, we got $45 steak that was cold with broccoli that was soggy and $35 fried crab cakes that seemed to have just been fried from frozen. Should’ve just took with their original menu which is way we all came to Southern Stone in the first place.

An awful experience from start to the abrupt end - we left when the entrees arrived. We were never informed that there would be an IU graduation weekend menu until we saw a note on the restaurant entrance … and there were no exceptions or requests allowed. Add to that, our entrees were served cod and inedible. We had reserved ‘bar seating’, as that was all that was available, and were sat at a folding table with a table cloth. Even our cocktails were poorly prepared. Our plans for a graduation celebration dinner fell flat - a disaster.

I have eaten at this restaurant twice now. The place has a nice vibe and the food is solid, but not spectacular. The service is a little slow especially if you are with a large party. Bottomline is that there are better places for the price. Note - one criticism that irked me. We ate here during graduation weekend. It was a shorter, special menu. I asked for the blackened salmon medium rare. The waiter told me there were no "special orders" given the graduation weekend. For anyone who works at this restaurant - asking to have fish or meat a certain way is not a special order. Had I asked for the Salmon in a mustard sauce, this would have been a special order. The reaction from this waiter was unacceptable and demonstrates poor customer service.

Knowing nothing about it, we chose Southern Stone for IU Graduation dinner, as it was one of the few places with an available reservation. We wanted to love it, and our family always makes the best of any situation and knew the restaurant was working hard but wasn’t prepared for this. The restaurant is clean and comfortable with good outdoor seating. I can’t write a review on everyday dining, but for this special occasion, we were overall disappointed with our experience and value for the money. The server was working so hard and was pleasant and engaging, but overwhelmed.The menu was preselected and we didn’t have a choice to decline our reservation within a week without a monetary penalty, but didn’t get the menu until 2 days before. The quality of food was mediocre at best, we ordered each of the four main options and were all disappointed; the steaks were fatty, the crab cakes were mostly breading, the pasta dish had no flavor, and the salmon tasted fishy. We had 4 cocktails from the bar - those were GREAT! Our bill was $450 for 6 people and a 22% gratuity was automatically charged. Thankfully they included some tip for the cooks because they had a very difficult chore to crank out food for so many people. I would actually come back for a regular meal like a burger or sandwich, but as a special graduation?? No.

I am a regular at Southern Stone, so I thought graduation brunch would be just as good. But I was a little disappointed with the menu--particularly the options and the prices. Usually, there is a lot of value in meals that Southern Stone prepares, but the quality of the food and the prices for the brunch did not make much sense to me. A side salad was $8 and it was truly just a little bite. I also would have liked to see more breakfast options for a 11:15am seating. If the menu is only going to sport lunch items, it should not be possible to schedule an 11:15 sitting. I also would have liked an update about the brunch menu so that I could have adequately prepared.

We had brunch here to celebrate my birthday. The reservation process was easy! The atmosphere was great! Love the antique doors that are being used as tables in the section where we sat. It was a beautiful, sunny Sunday morning and the natural lighting through the windows was great. We will definitely come again for brunch!
