About
The service was incredible slow. Not sure if they were under staffed but our server was doing bartender duties and trying to service our table. Drink order was missed and had to find someone to fill it. Food was okay and for the price certainly underwhelming. Presentation of the food was lacking as well. Big disappoint due to the excitement of trying a new restaurant.
I really wanted to like Slate, because the menu sounded great. But everything was over-flavored. The bread had a too-salty crust. The chefs salad was soaked in balsamic dressing that overpowered the flavor of everything else. The Lobster Mac was so rich I couldn’t even finish it, and I love lobster mac!!
Great food— lovely dining experience ... our waiter was frazzled but he was great and we were happy to spend time and just enjoy a great meal!
First time here. Not a lot of people but it was a mid week day in Dec. People at the bar were very loud, so kind of intruded on a nice evening out. Our server was excellent. Food was not worth the price...just being honest. Scallops were kind of dry and not paired very well with sides...some weird, dry, mango pancake things and cherries. The ribeye was very good but over priced. The deconstructed beef wellington app was amazing...definitely would order again. Never been and wanted to try it...we did, but will probably try other places before heading back. Again though the server was excellent!!
Surf and Turf was amazing...highly recommended. Ask for a booth, and make reservations.
My husband and I went for our wedding anniversary dinner on a Friday. The service and food was amazing! Try to surf and turf, you will not be disappointed. The crab cake appetizer was delicious as well. If you like sparkling rose they have a great one that would pair well with any dessert. This was a great place to celebrate any special occasion, worth the expense.
We had dinner at Slate this weekend to celebrate a birthday. Our table was in the window and the restaurant was not very busy. Our server, Jeff was very thorough in his explanation of the menu items and suggestions. My husband had the surf & turf and I had a filet. We had the parmesan crusted potatoes and creamed spinach along with the copped salad too. The lobster was sweet and tender as well as the steaks. The parmesan crusted potatoes could have used a bit more spice and flavor, but the aioli added flavor. The cream on the spinach was watery. The food took a little long to come out on a night when they were not that busy, but Sorellina was very busy. We enjoyed our dinner and with a little more attention to detail this could be a very nice restaurant for special night out.
Slate shares a kitchen with a restaurant next door that is much busier than Slate. That means you will wait a long time for your dinner to arrive. Ours took over an hour. The food itself was excellent. The restaurant also seemed understaffed. We won't be back even though the food was excellent.
Food and service were outstanding. Thank You Eddie (waiter) for excellent recommendations. A real gem serving Prime beef.
Wedding anniversary
It was an early Sunday dinner and we both had cocktails and steaks which were sublime.
Very much over priced for what you are getting. Steaks at Outback are better.
I ordered a filet at medium rare and it was almost well done. When I pay that much for food it better be perfect. I was too hungry to wait for a new one, so I just ate it. I also found it entertaining that the steak is served on three floppy asparagus. The potatoes were too salty. Wine list was sub par. Our waiter saved the experience. He was attentive but didn’t crowd us! My friend’s meat was cooked perfect. If it wasn’t for her food I would have given the place 2 stars. Not worth your money, seek food elsewhere.
Everything was delicious! Our table was waiting as expected and got a great seat to look out at the street, which was extra fun during Friday Night Live! Our server was friendly, honest and personable - ask for Andy!
We had a nice dinner at Slate. The menu is contemporary, wine list fine (lots of non-MI wine options). The heirloom tomato gazpacho was swell and very different from a more common presentation. The deconstructed beef wellington was delicious and generous.
Visited Slate with my wife and daughter at the end of a few day vacation in Leland. I had read the reviews on this app as well as TripAdvisor and yelp… They were generally good, but mixed. But we were in the mood for a great steak, and thought we would take a chance.
Being aficionados of great steakhouses, We were used to seeing prices for a good steak in the mid $40 range. We were also very accustomed to seeing separate sides. So, the big question was not how much it would cost, but rather, would they deliver on a steakhouse quality cut?
Slate did deliver. The steaks, though not wet or dry aged, sure tasted like it. They were tender, flavorful, and had a nice sear. I had the ribeye, my wife and daughter had the filets. The sides were mixed - lobster Mac was insanely good. Whipped potatoes - okay, but prefer them less pureed. Though that is their intent, i prefer mashed. Caesar was great. Caramelized Vidalia onion was more stewed than caramelized, so wasn’t a huge fan.
Overall, loved the steaks and okay on the sides other than lobster Mac. Steaks we’re all on a bed of grilled asparagus which was fantastic.
Total meal came to $220 before tip for three people. Not crazy for a steakhouse, but definitely a lot for somebody who might wander in off the street looking for a sirloin.
Great food! Great service!
Prime Steaks were Excellent, cooked perfectly. Service (Eddie) was attentive without being obtrusive. Crab cakes appetizer was superb, Lobster MAC & Cheese was also wonderful, but very rich and filling.
Amazing food. High quality and well worth the price. Way better than Apache Trout Grille.
Excellent food. Best steak I’ve had in Traverse City, a place known for great food. Definitely at the top end of the prices points in TC but worth every penny if you want some of the best food too.
Our waiter was friendly and attentive, but didn’t bring the bread until after our salad. Bread was meh. Our steaks were cooked a notch below what we ordered—I ordered medium and got medium rare, my wife ordered medium well and got medium. Otherwise, the flavor was very good. Wine list was short but with reasonable variety and reasonable prices.
It was our daughters birthday and we wanted to celebrate at a nice restaurant. Slate fit the bill.
While the service was great, I found the food overrated. I ordered scallops that were delicious, however they were on a bed of mango pancakes which a strange texture and no flavor. Served with some type of cherry concoction that missed the mark as an accompaniment to the scallops. I only ate the delicious scallops - 3 of them and for the money, the sides should have been better.
The service was excellent. Most of the food was delicious. My husband’s steak, however, was below average. It simply didn’t have much flavor.
The meat was very high quality and all the sides were very tasty. Service great.
My wife and I had a terrific meal at Slate. Everything was delicious and we had a very enjoyable experience. The service was excellent and the prices were very reasonable for the quality.
Food was excellent and the service was good but it appeared that they were understaffed. Only two waiters covering and every table was taken by patrons. Will certainly go back.
Very simply stated.. This place is outstanding! A near perfect experience I highly reccomend you give them a try!
Chop salad was very very nice. Our party of three had a filet, NY strip and salmon...all were nicely seasoned and very well prepared. Asparagus was perfect. We'll be back!
Service was very good, that’s where it ended abruptly.
The premium priced USDA PRIME 14oz Ribeye was not over 12oz at most and I’m sorry, I’ve never seen prime with gristle running through it, enough that 1/3 of the steak was inedible. The USDA PRIME Filet was as advertised size but was cooked first and let sit and was ice cold when it arrived. The wine list was decent. And I’ve never been in a fine dining restaurant that did not have sour cream or creme fraiche.
Halibut was good, Pasta under it, cold.
Cocktails were decent. In all, $250 could have been better spent at an Outback. Very disappointing.
Great scallops and steak
Did not stay for dinner. I don't usually leave a restaurant but there was only beef and seafood on the menu. No specials that included any other options. There should have been at least one chicken entree, pork or lamb entree. One person in our party would have been relegated to s side salad as her entree since she doesn't eat beef and is allergic/care for seafood/fish. Unfortunately, it didn't make sense to make her suffer through the meal.
The atmosphere, service and our meals were exquisite! Our waiter was able to find a wine that my wife loved on the first try, an accomplishment rarely seen. The presentation and quality of the meal was only surpassed by the taste. Slate is now on our regular list for a must experience for each trip to Traverse City. Our only regret was that we hadn’t been there before now. Bravo indeed to the chef and our waiter!
Phenomenal steaks and asparagus. Should have more lean, vegetable based appetizers. Wine list was great.
Excellent job using OpenTable. Will become a go to place for us!
Wonderful dinner! Love the restaurant💙. We will be back!
It was a really special place with fantastic service from Andy, great wine, and although the menu did not look too creative, they took some time tested ideas and made them superb. The chopped salad was amazing (and well chopped) with delicious candied nuts and a delightful dressing. My salmon was so tasty with a pesto orzo side dish that made the perfectly grilled asparagus jealous.......the other diners with me were equally impressed. I’m coming back to TC maybe just to visit Slate again!
The best steak I've ever eaten!!!
Really delicious but so freaking expensive.
I had halibut. It was cooked just right,; perfect. It was served with a very wide pasta noodle (can’t remember the name) In a very light tomato, eggplant and artichoke hearts. Also, had a chopped salad; crispy and good.
Also a Féliz was ordered. Very tender and served with fresh aparagus. On the side orders carmelized onion (um, um good!) and Rimini mushrooms in a Cabernet sauce. Excellent! Service was very attentive and friendly.
A very nice dining experience.
Beautiful little spot, right downtown. Amazing service, and delicious food! Steak and scallops were amazing!
