About this restaurant

A leader on the Japanese dining scene, Shogun has been showing London the ways of sushi for more than a quarter of a century. Located within the fine Millennium Hotel London, Shogun has a surprisingly cosy interior complete with stone walls and typical Japanese artworks. A long time favourite of celebrities and the wealthy of surrounding Mayfair, this intimate restaurant offers discreet and obliging service from friendly and helpful staff who know the menu – made up of beautifully fresh hand-rolled sushi, tempura, sashimi and teriyaki - like the backs of their own hands. The drinks menu offers only saké, but of the very highest quality, brewed on Shikoku, the smallest of Japan’s four main islands.

You have booked me a table. I went there to find out the restaurant has closed down a month ago.

We booked Shogun for 9pm Friday 2nd May 2015 through Open Table and received confirmation of our booking. We have been visiting this restaurant since it opened over 30 years ago and on this special occasion we had booked a hotel in London in order to stay late and enjoy our meal. When we arrived the place was in darkness and the doors locked. The doorman of the Millenium hotel told us that the owner had "done a flit" and that the restaurant had closed for good in mid-March. Obviously we were deeply disappointed and shocked. We could find no reference anywhere on the Internet to this closure, but surely we cannot have been the only people to have had this experience? Why has Open Table not been updated? And why did the restaurant itself not check this! Btw you can check that what I am saying is correct by calling the Millenium Hotel Mayfair. Friday night, central London........ Hotel booked and paid for...... and nowhere to eat dinner! Not happy.

The entrance approach filled us with foreboding, scruffy carpet, old ornaments in display cabinets, and two toilet doors at the bottom of the gloomy stairs which need a repaint. The welcome was not a 5* experience, rushed to our table in a relatively empty restaurant at 1915 on a Saturday evening. No one offered to take our coats. The menu is a bit 'dumbed down', with undue emphasis on set meals. We opted for these, plus a side order of additional Toro sashimi. On the plus side the food was very good, and the service of it well paced. Young waiting staff were OK but not outstanding. At £58 per head for the set meals this was not a cheap night out, nor was it expected, but the whole thing feels like it needs a radical update.

Really quite impressive (Oct 2013) . Possibly the best central london Japanese I have visited. There is something about the care of both quality and appearance of the food that shows that someone somewhere is taking real pride in doing a great job. It is not cheap, but considering it is in Mayfair, it is not a rip off either. Good for a special occasion. We had lots of starters, sushi, a sirloin teriyaki, andd plenty of Sake and the bill for 3 was about £180 including the 12% service charge. Let's hope Millenium Hotel don't put up their rent.

We went here as a one off chance as we were looking for places to eat nearby. So glad we found it - the food, service everything was amazing. The majority of the customers were Japanese so you know it it a good place to start! the sushi was the best I have ever eaten - like melt in your mouth sushi. Would recommend to anyone - the price was higher than most places I've been to, but worth it for special occasions!
