Shine Restaurant & Gathering Place Ratings and Reviews
I took all my family for our anniversary. Even though we were trolled by the gluten free options and the delicious flavor, the prices in comparison with the portions were way too expensive. I ordered the lamb but there was no lamb in my plate. My wife ordered the ravioli and she got 4 pieces of ravioli. I would come back only if I knew that your portions reflect fairness for the prices we are paying.
I'm going to try and explain the one star ratings I have given. Overall, this experience was good but far from outstanding, which is what I had been led to expect by the reviews and the lady for whom I arranged this birthday dinner. OK. so..the staff were friendly and polite. I expected no less. We arrived at 5:45 pm to have dinner before a movie. The place was quiet, but filling quickly. All absolutely normal expectations. Heidi had raved about the food and the 3 sisters who had started the establishment, particularly as she is gluten free. OK...so now my evaluation of my experience of the food and the consequent value rating. The Malbec tasted like house wine. I got the special, Beef Stroganoff,- a $21 plate. What arrived, was a 6" cereal bowl of noodles topped with 4 small slivers of steak.....the most fatty, gristly, chewy pieces of steak since my kebab in Uzbekistan. They ended up as expelled wads on the side plate. What remained,- the coffee cup size of noodles,- tasted delicious, however not $21 worth at any stretch. I think I have been really fair in my particular experience. I truly hope yours is better.
Been to Shine many, many times and this was my first disappointing experience. I was celebrating my birthday (my third time celebrating at Shine) and the waitress couldn't have been less celebratory. She couldn't be bothered to wish me a happy birthday. When I ordered appetizers, the beet hummus appetizer came with only four hard-as-rocks flatbread and one cracker. The plate looked practically empty. When I mentioned the hardness of the flatbread, the waitress said it was intentional. I've had Shine's flatbread before and it was always deliciously chewy, never hard. When we ordered more crackers to finish off the beet hummus, we were charged an additional $3.50 for more crackers. It was a less than satisfying experience.
Heads up! If you make a reservation for a group 6+ be sure to specify WHERE in restaurant you want to sit (up front, bar area). If you don't, you'll be seated in the middle of the restaurant where tables no taller than coffee table-height is where your dinner will be served. A little awkward. Luckily, we were able to be relocated after a short wait and had a great time.
I love Shine. I like the design, the philosophy, the food, the presentation. I did feel like there were a lot of delays with service throughout the meal. This could have been an anomaly, but it didn't feel good. I will go back and see if it continues or if it goes back to being friendly attentive service like I've experienced in the past.
The food here was amazing and this lady with allergies was even able to eat dessert. So nice to speak with our waiter Alex too. We wanted to go back a second time during our stay, yet time got away from us. We highly recommend Shine for excellent food, atmosphere, and friendliness.
We love the concept (locally sourced food), but feel that Shine could do far more with local ingredients, and we say this as CSA and gardening aficionados in the area. Our food was good but lacked a spark, and I don't mean high-chile content to spice it up while also disguising the actual flavor of the ingredients. There are vegetarian and vegan options available now which can add a little lustre to otherwise rather boring basics (like cauliflower, for example). I hope that, if the restaurant is sold (and I hear it may be on the market), new owners will consider sampling fare from competitors to see what they are doing right! Then copy the best...
Delightful! This was a very casual restaurant with surprisingly good food and service. I ordered the local crispy chicken confit and my husband orders the grass fed burger. Both entrees were delicious and the food came out right away. It's not a fancy place, good for everyday casual dining or a quick bite to eat before a movie.
Our waitress was very unpleasant and somewhat ruined the experience for us. She was very frustrated that we took our time deciding what to order, as we were visiting with friends. It's one thing to be frustrated, but it's another to blatantly express that frustration to your patrons. We will give Shine another chance, but will absolutely request a different waitress if we get the same one next time.
We went to Shine for brunch on Mother's Day. Two people in my party ordered pancakes, but we were told they were out of pancakes. Restaurants should never run out of food, especially on a busy special-occasion day. That's poor planning and management. This was our third time there, and the food is just ok, the portions are kind of small and the prices are high. We won't be back.
