Israeli
Shaya restaurant marries Israeli staples with Southern flavors and modern techniques, striking a balance between innovation and tradition. Shaya approaches Israeli cuisine as a grand mosaic, drawing influence and inspiration from North Africa, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, Turkey and Greece. The contemporary menu reflects the ongoing evolution of Israeli food and celebrates the abundance of Louisiana. Shaya highlights seasonal, responsibly- and locally-sourced ingredients.

The wood-fire oven is central to both the menu and the dining experience, from the incredible homemade, wood-fired pita to vegetable-centric small plates and heartier entrees. Many of the dishes on the diverse menu are meant to be shared and enjoyed throughout many courses.

Great food- great family dinner. Our waiter was sweet and accommodating- considering we were a big party with 2 year old twins at that. We had a lovely Father’s Day lunch

The food was outstanding! We started with smoked lebnah and the Fried Chicken Hummus, both of which were excellent but the hummus was the star. The date salsa verde was on another level. Our main was the brisket which didn't even require a knife. It exceeded expectations. We also had the halloumi which was a terrific compliment to the rest of the meal. The Pita is probably the best bread I have ever had. I wouldn't recommend getting as much food as we did, but it was all excellent. Will be returning soon!

Father’s Day… my husband and I… I was charged with taking him out to dinner as my son lives in California… we arrived 15 minutes early our reservations were at 11:45a and was prepared to wait.. nice we were seated… however was seated closer to the door in the center…puzzled as there was booth seating available… nevertheless we didn’t ponder… we enjoyed the service and the afternoon… it never disappoints.

The pita bread is unlike any other … it is leavened! You can make an entire meal just with the extra dips! However, we also ordered the lamb, to die for & the brisket, very yummy… we were stuffed & had leftovers!

Shaya is always good. The atmosphere is hip and has a good buzz of people. Service last night over the top great. Food. Well I always seem to eat the same thing but it’s always so damn good. The cauliflower hummus and then the lamb shank for dinner. It does not get any better than that for me!! Being a local means we know where to go. Shaya is one of the best.

If you are looking for a different flavor of New Orleans then Shaya is worth a try. Middle Eastern take on foods and unusual but tasty cocktails. I was very glad I made the reservation after hearing about Shaya for years.

Shaya was our first Israeli food experience and we LOVED IT!!! Our server was kind and patient enough to explain the best way to experience the menu. The food was outstanding. Fresh baked pita brought until you tell them to stop. We ordered all 5 salatims and loved them. The dried chicken hummus is an absolute MUST! The lamb kofte was out-of-this-world good!!! I realize this may not be a complement to Chef Alon Shaya, but as I said, this was my first take at Israeli style food...the lamb kofte tasted like the best italian meatball you've ever had, only way better. And the cinnamon babka...quite possibly the best thing i ate during this 4 day trip to NOLA. The lamb Kofte may have been the 2nd best thing, and I'm a cajun food junkie. We ate at several other good restaurants and Shaya had the best overall food. Shaya beat out GW Fins, Atchafalaya and Compere Lapin. While they were all very good, the unique experience of Shaya and the outstanding food have made this a new must-eat-at for our future trips to NOLA. Hopefully it won't be raining and we will be able to enjoy the courtyard dining.

Exceptional food, at once accessible and sophisticated. Traditional Mediterranean with a twist. Lamb kofte, brisket sandwich, shakshuka, okra, labneh. Great wine selection. Moroccan Mary (Bloody Mary with harissa and Moroccan spices) is pfantasic.

Lol, not great. Food homie back home told us to go here. I was fairly let down. You would think Mediterranean food would accommodate a vegan diet. Hope you like cauliflower cause that’s what you get three ways. LOL

Why the hype? The food is nothing special - we have had many times really good Israeli and Middle Eastern dishes, and Shaya does not measure up. The food lacked flavor, was too salty and just unimpressive. On a positive side - the non alcoholic cocktail with peach, basil, lemon and lemongrass was really good and very refreshing; the hibiscus tea with rose water and fresh orange juice was excellent, served in a large French press so it kept soaking the flavors and got better with every cup (it’s a generous size fit for two). And the pita bread was fresh from the oven.
We didn’t finish the other dishes - and we really like Israeli food and were ready to order quite a few but stopped after the small plates. The babaganouche and the musaka with eggplant were OK, nothing special; but the humus with chopped sweet peas was too salty and the cream cheese with anchovy lacked flavor. Same for the lamb kofta - salty and no flavor, and the roasted cauliflower which was a big disappointment- charred but without the softness and aroma that comes from quality preparation; the green tahini was just some green sauce on top, and the sunflower seeds added crunch but zero flavor. We didn’t finish any of them, and decided to skip the plans to get an entree and possibly a dessert. A really disappointing experience especially after reading about Shaya in so many places.

The food was great (as always) but I'm afraid the place is going downhill. The service was the worst I've had in a long time. We sat outside for close to 10 minutes before someone came to give us water. The server clearly didn't want to be there, was borderline rude when talking to us, and never picked anything up to help create room on the table (except at the very end near tip time). There was trash all over the floor and it smelled a little bit like garbage outside (we were near a door to the kitchen). The bathroom was dirty and there was no soap for washing hands. We'll be back for the food - hopefully, this is a one time issue and not overall poor management (There were 5-6 tables open the entire time - which is unlike Shaya. I wonder if others are having a similar type of experience).

Shaya was recommended by friends more familiar with NOLA and vegetarian friendly restaurants and it didn’t disappoint. Freshest most delicious pita hot from the oven with cauliflower hummus was a winner! Our waiter was so nice and helpful and it was an oasis amidst a city full of fried food!
