Food was fabulous especially the smoked tuna dip and the pork shank. Great happy hour options as well.
The food was absolutely delicious. We both shared an appetizer of fried okra and had the New York strip with red potatoes and mushrooms. For dessert, we had banana pudding and homemade ice cream. Very friendly and attentive waitress, she was amazing. Best service I've had in a long time at a restaurant. I would highly recommend this establishment!
They were short staffed. I did make a note at my reservation that the person I was bringing had a 70th birthday that day and we came there to celebrate . No one acknowledged that. They were out of two Of the menu items we ordered . Food was good prices were much better than expected . Staff was nice but not friendly .
Excellent lunch! Great food and atmosphere! Worth the drive from Baton Rouge!
We had a wonderful time, the portions were huge and the food was delicious! We will definitely be back!
We love Restaurant 1796. We come yearly for the Angola rodeo and always make reservations for dinner a tour. The staff is great and the steak is one of the best I’ve ever had.
Ok... first off it's a beautiful restaurant. The atmosphere is great, everything from the kitchen fire roasting meats to the chandelier - very farmhouse chic! Kudos. We had an appointment at 530pm followed by a tour of the plantation at 7pm. Next, the employees- well the two young hostesses standing at the podium when we arrived (why 2?) apparently didn't get the memo to be friendly. They acted as though we were a bother to them and didn't even offer a smile - a shame really. Next our waitress- McKendra I believe, very nice and helpful and told us that they recently changed to their menu. She answered our questions and got our drink order and returned with some wonderful cornbread. We ordered the chicken /andouille sausage gumbo and mac and cheese for starters followed by a NY strip and potatoes. Gumbo- awesome/mac n cheese- honestly ..tasteless and dry/ steak was extremely overcooked and COVERED in some horrible overdone garlic demi-glaze ( I think the steaks might have been old and they were trying to cover it up) served with rosemary & garlic (more garlic?really?) underneath the steak ...(my guess- even the potatoes were hiding from that awful glaze) I'm afraid even the potatoes came straight from the frozen section at Trader Joe's. :-( We ordered dessert next -actually needed something to squash the lingering taste of that horrible glaze out of our mouths and I'm NOT kidding. The best part of the experience at the restaurant- the dessert! Get the BREAD PUDDING- SO AMAZING.... Rich, creamy, tasty white chocolate with just the right amount of croissants/egg ratio! Superb and delightful! I'd recommend going to this restaurant to others but would stick to maybe eating somewhere else first and going here for dessert and coffee. It seems as though it's a new restaurant and they don't have their bases covered yet, but I'm sure they will -in time. Bartender pours an AWESOME stiff drink.
I didn’t quite know what to expect. Thought it would be a good experience and good food from other reviews. I was wrong. It was great. I believe what pushed it past my expectations was being sat in front of the fire that they cook on. The service was exceptional. The food was great. Getting to talk to the cook was awesome. The experience as a whole was outstanding. Had we not sat in front of the fire, I think, it would have been really really good, instead of outstanding. The cauliflower we were talked into trying by our waitress and cook was great. My wife and I don’t do cauliflower. But after this dish, we will, from here. The steak my wife got was cooked perfect. She said it was probably an 8 out of 10. The shrimp and grits I got was great. Btw, it had popcorn in it. To my surprise was actually good together. I would give it an 8 out of 10. They serve cornbread to you before your meal. The portion size of plates is a little on the big side. You will spend around 25 per person. Which for this experience is worth it. If you add in an app and desert, you could push the cost up to 35-40 per person. in closing.... will definitely be back!
Great service, awesome food, and amazing time. Highly recommend the restaurant! It was a fantastic experience!
Very interesting and delicious food. I would recommend that the servers know more about the restaurant. We were interested in learning about our chef, but the server did not know anything about him or her. I’ll come back because of the food, even with the lack of knowledge of the server.
The food is amazing. Everything we got was delicious!!!
Great friendly service! Beautiful setting both inside and out. And a great value for the money!
I have been here twice now and i must say it is one of my favorite restaurants now. Too bad it is almost 3 hours away from my house. It is a little bit on the expensive side but the steaks are amazing! Will be going back every time I stay at the Myrtles Plantation.
We had an excellent meal and loved the atmosphere of the restaurant.
Went here because of being a longtime reader of Rod Dreher, and knew his cousin is the executive chef. Lovely setting back in the trees. Terrific service, and quite possibly the best pork chop I’ve ever had. A must visit for anyone traveling to or through St. Francisville.
Had brunch here after my small wedding - it was perfect! Great service!
This restaurant was amazing! I was very impressed with the whole experience, but the fried okra and the bread pudding were THE BEST!! Thanks for a great experience!
Great restaurant, amazing food, attentive wait staff and very friendly!!!!
It was fabulous!!!
Great food. Great service. Flavorful changes to old favorites. Like ice cream with bread pudding, chocolate cream brulee, smoked potato salad, etc...
Every menu item we ordered was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. The whole fried okra was a unique surprise. The Beet hard to go wrong with perfectly fried oysters and pasta with bacon. The iron skillet bread pudding was scrumptious and a lot like chunks of pain perdu. I highly recommend the restaurant because of it's attentive service and attention to freshness in the food!!!
Love this place. The service is wonderful. Normally all the food is great. Tonight, my favorite appetizer was a little off. The rabbit livers were larger chunks and the crust covering the liver was falling off before you could cut it. I love this stuff, but not quite right tonight.
We started with drinks. The wife had some blueberry concoction. She loved it. I ordered a French 75 with gin. Not quite right. Next round was a gin and tonic. Very good.
For entree’s we had the wonderful fried chicken and lamb chops. Both were great and cooked to perfection.
A good night dining, while enjoying the beauty of the Myrtles.
Made reservation online with no problem. Food was delicious. Service was excellent. Ambiance added to the overall enjoyment. Can’t wait to go back
We had a wonderful dining experience for my mother in laws 97th Birthday. The music was a tad loud for us to have conversations and the service was FANTASTIC!
The food was amazing!
Every aspect of our experience was wonderful. The food was absolutely delicious, the cocktails were fabulous, the service was amazing. We have already booked our reservations for our next visit.
We enjoyed our meal at Restaurant 1796. The food was good and the staff was attentive. The only thing that was slightly problematic was the noise level and the lack of space between the tables. Our reservation was for Friday night, which is a very busy time. Overall, we enjoyed ourselves and will definitely dine there again.
We had an amazing time at 1796! We were celebrating my boyfriends birthday. I emailed a couple of weeks ahead of time and had a German chocolate cake there waiting for us. They brought it out with candles and it was really sweet and special! Our server Casey was delightful! We had asparagus and Mac and cheese for appetizers. Amazing!!! We each had steaks with mashed potatoes for dinner and cleaned our plates. It was a wonderful experience and we will definitely return!
The staff was AH mazing. We were late and wet and confused. We rolled in from a storm like confused wet rats. The staff was accommodating and helped us check in as well. I’d asked ahead about a birthday cake and the manager picked an amazing one!! We could not have enjoyed the staff, the restaurant and the food more. It was well worth the drive of over two hours in the rain to eat here on our birthday before our stay at the plantation. Thank you for the opportunity to praise our experience.
PS... the food, also to die for. And they were more than gracious to accommodate us for gluten free as well. The steaks were seasoned and cooked to perfection.
Wonderful ambiance, wait staff and food. The crab cakes were excellent. We had the roasted asparagus as an appetizer and it was incredible. Three people had the chicken salad sandwich and all agreed it was delicious. Beautiful setting and a short drive from Baton Rouge. Would definitely go again.
FIRST TIME THERE - VERY PLEASED. I will go back there again.
Our waitress was also bar tending so her attention was with serving the bar. Our service was slow. And food was cold once it did arrive. Which is sad because it was very flavorful just cold.
Having dined at the Carriage House multiple times in the past, we looked forward to dining at the replacement 1796, and I must say we were very pleased with the whole experience. We (party of 4) were seated at our reservation time, very attentive and pleasant wait staff, excellent menu choices and excellent food from appetizer through dessert. Nice decor and loved the visible wood fired grill. Will definitely return
The only reason I didn't give consistently 5 stars is because it was quite noisy which made it hard to hear my fellow diners. Food was delicious. Loved the decor. Will be back to try some of the other dishes.
Brunch was wonderful. The greens and cornbread are my wife’s favorite dish. Crab cake benedict was excellent, as was the breakfast sandwich. My daughter got the french toast and loved the apple topping and candied pecans. Overall, a fabulous brunch.
My wife and I made reservations, and ate here before our tour of the Myrtles. We arrived 20 mins or so early, and were seated immediately. The kitchen had minor issues getting my steak a proper medium, but once they got it right our food was excellent! We tried their signature cocktails, they were excellent. We will certainly return, next time we plan to stay in the house!
Great food best we’ve had in the area. Waitress did not tell us about all the specials. But other than that and high noise level it was great. Will go back and recom it.
The food was very nice but the noise level made dining there unattractive
This is a first rate dining experience, from appetizer through dessert. The setting is lovely, and reflects the atmosphere of the plantation. There is an amazing appetizer/small plate, enough to share, with cauliflower, bacon and a sriracha sauce. A great place to eat, good wine selection too.
