Puesto La Jolla Ratings and Reviews
Excellent authentic Mexican cuisine at a reasonable price, with very good service. We were impressed that the tables were not jammed together in an attempt to cram as many customers as possible into the restaurant. In addition, the table was ready at the reserved time (which is more than we could say of Eddie V's). A reasonable amount of space between tables and on-time seating is indicative of putting the customer experience above squeezing every last penny out of the place.
We had to wait twenty minutes for our table without receiving an explanation or apology. The wait staff was slow and indifferent. It took a long time for someone to take our order and even longer to receive our food. It was very cold and drafty in the restaurant. The noise level was deafening. The food was below average. We are not planning on returning or recommending this restaurant.
Every visit to Puesto leaves us wanting to come back. The tacos are gourmet and unique. Filet and Lobster tacos are outstanding. But so are the rest of them.
Also, the salsa you get with the chips is the best. and that spicy margarita!
and don't pass on dessert. their dessert chef has some pretty amazing creations that are worth a try.
We've been to Puesto many times but this was a poor experience. Our food was so salty that most of the table could barely get past their second taco. I think everyone was too polite to mention it but once someone finally did we agreed that it was horribly salty and not good at all.
Met a friend for lunch. Small menu. The pollo verde bowl was tasty, but nothing outstanding.
The chicken tacos are better. My only gripe would be the 3% sur charge on the bill. I understand cost increases for a business, but I don't appreciate the extra cost as a sur charge to the customer. In order to accomodate higher wages, the tip for the waiter becomes less. I suppose all equals out. Still don't appreciate the sur charge though.
We usually go for taco tuesday but decided to splurge for a Friday lunch with the kids. The portions seemed smaller this time, so even less of a value without the tuesday discount. The past few times we have been the newish blue corn tortillas have also been inconsistent, often mushy. We miss the old tortillas. But now there's a kid menu that offers flour tortillas for them. Kids liked these better but we asked to have the avocado on the side. They came with not only avo on top but also big squirts of sour cream. DO NOT put sour cream on a kid quesadilla without saying so on the menu! Had to scrape it all off. Also the quinoa was super crunchy, undercooked. Hoping for more consistency in the future.
While appetizers - especially the guacamole - and meal was OUTSTANDING, the service was horrendous! Extremely slow service and very frustratingly forgetful after something was requested. Sadly the restaurant was not too busy either. Great food made up for it but thankful I was not in a hurry and was patient.
The restaurant is great for a dinner with kids. The main problem is that most of the food is too spicy hot . We could hardly eat the guacamole because it was too spicy. You could barely taste the avocado. The tacos were also too spicy hot. If you really like spicy hot, then this is your place.
Everything was great except when Puesto called to confirm, they asked if we were celebrating anything. I said yes, my friends birthday will actually be in 3 days. The lady said great, we can bring over our ice cream we give to those celebrating birthdays. It never did happen. I hadn't seen this friend in 2 years and it would have been a nice touch at the end of dinner.
Despite making a reservation we didn’t get a table on time and were asked to take a table next to the bar and post that no one would come to even take an order and we litteraly had to ask for someone to provide us the menus. The experience can be better as it’s definitely not what u expect in and around that location.
My husband and I were overnighting in La Jolla earlier this week and wanted a good meal for dinner, so we chose Puesto La Jolla (based on its rating on Trip Advisor) and made an Open Table reservation about 20 minutes before we wanted to eat. We were lucky to get a reservation, as when we arrived, the place was packed with people waiting outside. However, we were shown to a table right away and we really loved the creative tacos menu. I was happily upsold on my Margarita choice (to the Mercado Margarita), but it was delicious so I thought it was worth the extra few dollars. Anthony was our waiter and he was very professional and took very good care of us throughout the entire meal. This is definitely a go-back place for us, a very nice surprise!!
It was perfect. We loved the food. Server was so nice. Everything was amazing! It was just too loud to hear everyone at our table ( I don't think the restaurant can control the noise level in the restaurant though ).
These are the best tacos everrrrr. Everyone who works there is so nice. I also love how you can see the kitchen. :)! Good vibes here.
I loved this place when it first opened, especially the crab guacamole and carnitas tacos. The "free" hot sauce served with chips has never been edible - it's like swallowing acid. I have always enjoyed some spice in my food with moderation. However, the chefs have changed which we noticed a year ago. Now, everything tastes like a bottle of hot sauce has been added including the go-to guacamole. It took a long time for our simple order of chicken enchiladas to be served. I felt like my espohagus needed to be made of steel to tolerate the over-the-top spicy food. The food was a miserable experience and the service was mediocre. (Plus there was a 20 something woman disturbing the patrons asking for money. She was walking in the original section of the restaurant repeating her story to each table.) I felt the same way about the food the last time I was there but gave the restaurant another chance. The excessive amount of hot sauce masks any natural flavor of the ingredients. It's like having an excuse for bad food. All you taste is the hot sauce.
