Primus’ intimate and bright atmosphere is the perfect place for a light bite and drink at the bar from 2-5 or dining with a group of friends, 6 days a week in downtown Durango.
With a dining room downstairs and the option to reserve our dining room upstairs for private events we have the capacity to accommodate small or large groups.
Good food, slow service
Great local restaurant. The owner / chef was very present and friendly. Fantastic food!
Expensive for the small portions that were served. Truffled risotto had so much onion that you couldn't taste the fresh truffles that were a costly addition.
This was our third time coming and honestly the good just keeps getting better. Can't wait to go again
Fantastic restaurant, great food!!!
Excellent food. Very unique and full of flavor. Great service.
Very original, delicious! specials are excellent. Everything has a custom touch. Don’t miss going here.
Food was excellent. Menu good with many options. Server was pleasant. Owners were very amicable and spent time chatting with us.
Service was slow despite the fact that the restaurant was not crowded.
Drinks and food were very pricey. Sat downstairs, but when upstairs to take a look around. Didn't like that you could see them working in the kitchen but sitting downstairs was fine.
Our 3rd time Dining at Primus . Best restaurant in Durango , haven’t had a single dish yet that wasn’t good . Our favorites so far have been the lobster roll (bun roll not sushi) & the bison Tomohawk , best steak in town bar none & If you want raw oysters , they got em & they are as fresh as any we’ve had. We’ve also had the fish special twice now , fresh & flavorful both times .
Great flavor combinations you won’t get most places. My husband loved the Bison Tomahawk steak. My Lobster Fettuccine was pretty good but I could tell it sat for a bit until it was delivered. Good Cab with the dinner but pieces of cork were floating in it. The tables were uneven and plates kept sliding toward the edge. The waiter forgot to mention specials until we ordered and didn’t know the fish of the day when asked. Also they were out of caulilini which was part of my pasta dish and my husbands side, and we were one of the first customers of the day. Overall good food and friendly staff. I anticipate some of the kinks are due to the restaurant being open only a month and hopefully are soon resolved. I’d return in a few months to try again.
Although Durango has many fine restaurants, Primus is clearly a step above. John Daly's restaurant occupies a very narrow storefront on Main Street but the flavors and meal preparation are definitely big-city. A must-try for Durango residents and visitors alike!
Always a great meal. The owners work very hard to create a great experience
We had a terrific experience at Primus. The fod was delicious and unique. The vegetable side dishes was my favoritet part of the meal (blue cheese Brussel Sprouts and the Swiss Chard). I also highly recommend the mushroom salad. We enjoyed great service and personal attention from the Chef/Owner. Can't wait to go back.
Amazing food and service!
Primus is one of the best restaurants in Durango for fine dining.
Primus is not cheap , nor should it be , the food was great . This was our first time eating at Primus . For Aps we had a fried combo plate of oysters marbled , very tender & full of flavor ! The chef came by our table & talked to us about the various places he was sourcing his seafood & meats , he definitely seems to have the hookup . If there’s one thing I would change it would be the lighting , on this night it didn’t matter cause we had a 3rd wheel with us but for a romantic dinner with the wife I would prefer if it wasn’t so bright .
The food was very nice, but a restaurant this expensive should also be comfortable. The tables upstairs are small for four people, crowded together and cold. Even the silverware was cold. And, two people in our group complained of cold feet. My bison filet was served warm, made colder,no doubt, by the silverware.
It was an original and interesting menu, but Durango has plenty of good restaurants, and the menu alone won't assure their long-term success.
Great night out. Sauce with the oysters was wonderful, Bison Tartar was fantastic - and great portion size. Duck confeit was a bit too salty and tough for my taste.
Overall a great menu and can't wait to try more of it.
This was the best dinner I have had in the last year. I used to travel the world, and am fortunate to have tasted some superb food. Primus quality was on par with the best, in the major cities of the US and abroad. My only small wish is for the portions to be slightly bigger for the price, and the accompaniment to be a little more “complicated” than an arugula salad.... I hope this restaurant expands and stays in business for a long time. Impressive!
While in Durango we searched for an above average restaurant and found Primus. It is far above average!
The food was delicious! We started with the baked goat cheese appetizer. Then shared the tomahawk bison filet steak, which was like butter. To which we added black truffles - OMG it was food nirvana!
The staff was very nice. A large party came in behind us, so it took a little longer to get our entree but we were happy to relax after skiing all day. We tried a new wine and thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience.
Food was spectacular!! Every bite was delicious, would definitely recommend!!
New year eve. Our flight was delayed and I called twice to reschedule and then called to add a 3rd person. Very gracious host, excellent food and service
We were there in a group of four on New Year’s Eve. We selected items from both the regular and special menus and everything was exceptional. The large crowd did expose the one drawback to Primus, the exceptionally narrow space. Waitstaff had a narrow, one-way path to access 9 4-tops, and with all of them full, it created a bottleneck that negatively impacted service.
Alaskan king crab was way overcooked. Attitude to correct the matter from the wait staff and chef was horrible. Will never go back here!
One of our favorite restaurants in Durango! Never disappoints!
We had a Christmas family dinner and were all amazed at the incredibly delicious food. The lobster bisque was amazing as was the artichoke appetizer. Best bison prime rib my husband has ever had, the elk strips were so flavorful, highly recommend the lobster angel hair pasta and the special of crab stuffed Maine haddock. Portions were so generous so we didn’t try the desserts. Next time! You gotta go to enjoy the symphony of flavors! The chef came by and talked to us several times explaining the dishes. Fabulous!!
What a great way to spend Christmas Eve! Great service - thank you, Roland! Everything from our grilled artichoke appy to our bison filet and wild boar tortellini was perfect. Thank you Primus for a special night out.
We visited for my son’s graduation. It was a great meal with excellent service.
The food is outstanding. I love the interesting combinations that make the experience memorable.
It’s a new restaurant in a small location on Main Street. I wasn’t aware of it and found it on Open Table. I read a few reviews and they all commented on the fabulous food and thinking yeah, ok, they’re reviews. Well, consider this a fabulous food review. We had the Noel Night Bubbles and Bites and yes they were bites but definitely a taste teaser for the entrees of which there isn’t the usual beef and chicken. The Lobster Bisque is the best I have ever had anywhere. Don’t expect lobster lumps though but the taste is fabulous. Staff was very friendly and helpful plus the owner/Executive Chef, John Daly, had some moments to engage us in pleasant conversation. We will return and good luck to a new restaurant!
Such a great dining experience. We had the amazing goat cheese appetizer to start. Our main courses from Bison steak to duck were prepared perfectly with a blend of unique flavors and ingredients. We finished with the outstanding flourless chocolate cake made with cherries from Italy. The owners, Chef John and Kerry, came around our table multiple times to make sure everything was perfect. Service was very attentive as well. Unique dining experience for anywhere, but especially for Durango.
This place is awesome! We are local repeat diners and love the food. Always be open to the specials as they are usually inspired. Food is great, wine is reasonable and makes for a fun night. You won't regret a visit!
We were finally able to get a sitter for a date night. We have been waiting to try Primus and it was outstanding! Everything was perfectly seasoned and cooked perfectly. This place is a gem and a must try!
Wonderful meal! Chef John Daly has created an oasis of fine dining in Durango. Great mix of game and seafood. I had the shrimp and endive salad. Very creative and shrimp perfectly grilled and endive and greens dressed just right. Husband had smoked trout salad. Just WOW! He had bison tenderloin-great sauce and almost could cut with a fork-delicious. I had lamb Tbone-very tender and sauce was so amazing along with purple mash. Desserts were outstanding and coffee was delicious. We will return!!
As we walked in a couple leaving were telling owner what incredible food they had had... on leaving we did the same! Service food wines all superb. Oysters to start my Wife had scallops I had buffalo tomahawk which was probably the best steak of any meat I have ever eaten.
Incredible! It is not very often that I pause after every bite just to savor the experience. Primus hit a home run. We tried 4 different dishes and every one of them were out of this world delicious and unique. The basil creme brûlée is not to be missed.
I have to say this was probably the best meal I have had in Durango. Great service and incredible food.
Hands down the best restaurant in Durango right now! I've lived here for 20 years, and have recently been disappointed by other highly rated restaurants. The menu is creative and interesting - the food fresh and well presented. The wine list could use some work, and the space is what it is, but overall we were very impressed.
Food and service was fantastic!!!!!!! Mike, our waiter, was extremely friendly and attentive! He worked with the kitchen to work up a kid friendly food option for our toddler. John and Kerry (owners) are phenomenal. They have always gone out of their way to make us feel welcome and have taken the extra effort to accommodate us with a toddler.
We drove 7 hours to have dinner at
Primus. We are fans of John Daly culinary skills from Denver and heard he had opened his own restaurant. We can't get enough of this lobster rolls it's a grab as if you were in Maine. The scallops are to die for and the Elk Tartar was the best we've had all around the world. We couldn't leave without having creme brûlée and flourless chocolate cake both were incredible and totally worth blowing our diet! We'll be back every time we visit Durango.
