Pausa, a bar and cookery in San Mateo, calls for guests to take a recess from life and enjoy a dining experience that transports them to a place of leisure. With a strong focus on modern Italian, our menu will consist of house-made pasta, wood-fired pizza, wood-fired grill, and house-cured meats. Our friendly and knowledgeable team will ensure your pause is a memorable one.

We are now taking reservations for our patio tables, bar, and indoor tables. As we practice social distancing with our new limited floor plan, we ask that you and your guests limit your dining to 2 hours to accommodate all reservations.

When checking table availability, if outdoor seating is not an option to select, then your reservation will be for an indoor table as the outdoor may be booked.

Too loud. I always have to yell when I dine here. Having the speakers in the booth seat makes I harder to talk. I don’t go here very often because of the poor acoustics. Music too loud instead of it being ambient/background noise. Hard to have a conversation unless you sit next to them on the same side of the table.

Way too long. Pork was overcooked and dry. Otherwise grrat.

We had a late reservation and went in for their amazing pizza. After ordering, the waiter returned to inform us that they "ran out"!!!! He said the only other time that happened was on Mother's Day. So disappointed, but ordered the risotto and it was delicious.

This was my first experience at Pausa and my party enjoyed it very much! There are few places where we have multiple courses and they are all good to great. But Pausa did not disappoint. We enjoyed everything from drinks to appetizers to desserts. Everything was great and we really enjoyed the environment and staff. Out waiter was especially kind, helpful and just all around great to us. Definitely recommend!

All that we were offered was delicious, the gnocchi where not as we spected, but the rest was extraordinary, the drinks very good

The drinks, starters, pasta and entrees were superb! Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the ingredients used in each of the dishes. The 72 hour dough in the pizza…amazing! 👌🏼 Definitely will be coming back again and again.

A good neighborhood modern Italian restaurant; we visited with 2 friends and had a good meal with excellent service. Best of the night was the vegetarian risotto, which was given a touch of sweetness with an unusual ingredient: sweet preserved lemon! The lemon's acidity kept the sweetness in balance, and all four of us voted this 5-stars. If it's on the menu when you visit, be sure to try it! Also a nice charcuterie plate, although did not care for the regional flatbread cakes (they look like pancakes) which were different, but uninteresting flavor- or texture-wise. Great wine list, too.

I celebrated my friend's bday at Pausa last night. The place was lively. I have sat at the bar, chef's table. Our food, service were great! Katie took care of us. What impressed me the most was the timing. We did not feel rushed - dishes, drinks, refill appeared perfectly timed. We both look forward to future gatherings at Pausa.
