Beer was the first alcoholic drink to be produced in England, and has been brewed continuously since prehistoric times. In the 1980s archaeologists found the evidence that Rome's soldiers in Britain sustained themselves on Celtic ale: it was one of the most common drinks during the Middle Ages and consumed daily by all social classes in the northern and eastern Europe. The early 1700s saw the development of popular new styles of beer in London: Porter and India Pale Ale. In the early 20th century, serving draught beer from pressurized containers began. The total number of breweries in 2010 was estimated at 700 with most new breweries being microbreweries
