Olive & Basil
Host was not polite or welcoming. Took too long to get water. No one told us the menu is online & we needed to scan a code to access, but we figured it out. Kids meals were much too large & double the price of most kids meals for simple pasta. Kids got wrong sauce on pasta. Chicken that was supposed to be added to pasta was just a side order of kebab. It was very strong flavor & did not go with the pasta dish. Food took almost an hour.
The view was just beautiful but the big surprise was how great the food was! We had Gyro plates, hummus, greek salad, lamb shank and all of it was truly delicious. We are a foodie family and everyone raved about it. Great surprise. The service was very good only wish they had a full bar with real alcohol not the rice kind but they do have lots of beer and wine! Would highly recommend it!
Brutal, understaffed, not the waiters fault, he had too many tables for one person to wait on, fill water, and bus the tables. Wish the food looked like some of the pictures, but rather it was under par as well.
Just extremely over priced for what could’ve been purchased at a mall food court restaurant with a similar theme.
Place wasn’t bad. Food was decent, a cool place to have a drink on the balcony.
We had a great experience. Server was super friendly. My only recommendation is to reduce the volume of the music. It is fine for the night scene, but was way too loud for breakfast.
I made reservations here for 8pm on Valentine’s Day with my wife. We got there on time, got seated, and nobody came by our table for an hour. It was 9pm and we still hadn’t even gotten any water. We finally got the attention of a waiter at 9:10 and told him the situation, and he simply shrugged his shoulders and said “sorry.” When we said we were just going to leave, he didn’t even bat an eye or care to really apologize or fix the situation. What a horrible experience.
The wine glasses were dirty, the service was very poor. The food was pretty good. The service staff didn’t seem to care very much.
In town visiting for work travel and wanted to try somewhere different. This place left much to be desired.
This restaurant is more like a Greek diner that has a nice location. The furnishings are diner. The menus were tired. We were wanting a festive place with a view and it was literally empty on a Tuesday eve that was a perfect sunset.
We left and didn’t eat there. Maybe on a busy night or perhaps an informal lunch, we will come back.
The servers and hostess were kind and didn’t give us any neg vibes when we left.
Love the view from the patio of the ocean and the menu is amazing
Lovely wait staff. Our hostess, Artemisia, was friendly and conscientious to our needs. Our waiter, Vinny, was personable and knowledgeable about the menu. Both made the experience quite pleasant.
The food was also awesome. Tasty dishes. Appropriate portions. Nice flavor profiles. Also, the variety of offerings should please a variety of dietary needs.
I would definitely recommend.
The maître d greeted us by the sidewalk area, took up the stairs and sat us at the patio area. We weren’t given the option to sit inside. Service was ok. The kitchen was up another set of stairs so we felt sorry for our waitress. The food was ok. Glad we tried for restaurant week but will not go back to pay full price.
Unfortunately the wait staff was not sufficient for the restaurant. The server could not keep up (probably not to his fault) and never returned to the table after providing the main plate. The meat and fish were hot but the rest of the food was not. On top of that the bathroom was really dirty... ick!
I do not recommend this place at all! The restaurant definitely has an identity crisis to say the least. The food was very basic but the prices were inflated. I don’t mind paying a premium for a delicious meal and awesome ambiance but this place had neither. The service was very slow but they only had 1 server so I guess he did the best he could. The hostess was cleaning tables next to us and sprayed onto our table as well, and whatever they are using was so overwhelming that the smell lingered the entire meal. There was trash in the hallway leading to the bathroom along with bathroom cleaning products, very bizarre. Management definitely needs help with this place in regards to food quality and a clearer vision of what atmosphere they are trying to establish if they want to last in a place like La Jolla.
Tried this place out for Restaurant Week. Won’t return. Good amount of food served but nothing special about it and only one waiter serving the whole place! Great location but decor/cleanliness had much to be desired.
Ate off the SDFW menu, was good but not as many Mediterranean choices as I would have liked or expected.
Amazing views!! Good food and atmosphere. Bro burger was too big but other than that it was a great place to eat in a beautiful town
We had lunch during restaurant week. They had a 2 course menu with 2 options for appetizer and maybe 5-6 options for entree. Portions were quite large and there were a lot of vegetarian options which was nice. I might have preferred smaller portions and add a dessert, but that might just be me!
Ran out of food (steak). No one in restaurant and service was still slow with a mandatory 18% gratuity added to bill. Food is expensive for what you get (6 tablespoon of humus for $13). I'm guessing it will be out of business within 6 months.
The food was underwhelming. They were out of spaghetti for my child. The hamburger was overcooked. The Greek dishes were not very tasty. The bathrooms were out of toilet paper.
We made a reservation on Christmas Day and were accommodated and seated. However, after +30 minutes of waiting, we left because they had one server for the outdoor area and were one of the only restaurants open on Christmas Day. Understandable, yet, some water could have been offered.
Nice service even for xmas day, food quality great and staff really nice
Lovely Christmas vibes, good food, and friendly staff.
Came for the beautiful views, stayed for the great food. Had an excellent dinner set menu offering. Enjoyed the Mahi Mahi over couscous, an interesting twist. Good cocktails. Will return.
We came for thanksgiving dinner, food was amazing and prices were right. Servers are super polite and accomodating. I have some food allergies and chef made me special accomodations which i appresciated it so much. Ambiance was fun and view is the best la jolla has to offer. I would highly recommend this spot. We will be back!
Besides the amazing view, the food and service were truly outstanding. I highly recommend Olive and Basil restaurant.
Excellent food, beautifully served in a relaxed friendly environment
The food was good. I had pasta with clams, extra garlic, and wasnt disappointed. I'm from the northeast, so a tough judge of Italian as we have many good Italian retaurants.
We journeyed from Los Angeles and met family (including our aunt in a wheelchair) and found Olive and Basil to be PERFECT for our table of 6! Yuri was our excellent server and our dishes (which we shared) were all delicious! With elevator access to the 2nd floor, we were able to view the sunset from the huge windows. Applause! We'll return soon!
The food was amazing! Even though we arrived about hour or so before they were closing, everything was done just as if they were just opening for the day.
The food was wonderful, the service was impeccable and we really enjoyed ourselves.
Service was good. Nice peek-a-boo view from most of the outdoor deck, albeit not enough heaters when the cool evening breeze kicked up. Went for restaurant week. Very chewy steak - that was a disappointment. Hummus was a good appetizer. Tiramisu must have been supplied by the food supplier - still a little frozen...parking not the easiest.
Excellent food and service.
My experience at Olive and Basil was disappointing. The menus were stained and crusted with dried food chunks, the windows surrounding the patio were dirty and clearly hadn’t been cleaned in quite some time, however I disregarded this, because if the food is tasty, everything else is secondary. Plus I was out for a nice meal on my last night of vacation-trying to be positive! The drink menu was full of the basic wines you’d find at the grocery store, not bad, but definitely not inventive or intriguing me to purchase. We had no time to enjoy the appetizer because our main courses arrived one minute after the appetizer was dropped off. We ordered the calamari as an appetizer, which was very chewy, with limited seasoning. The main courses were just as bland. Spongy shrimp and my pasta seemed like it had been boiled the day before and reheated in a microwave, stale tasting and not even warm throughout. With so many amazing food options in La Jolla and San Diego in general, please just skip this place. It seems to rely on its fabulous location and unsuspecting tourists for its business. I spent $80 for a meal I didn’t eat, and left feeling hungry.
We were disappointed in our experience for a few reasons. First of all, they were short staffed on the evening we dined. There was only 1 server and a hostess and they were running the entire front end. So service was a bit frantic. We ordered a greek salad and were very surprised to see that it was 95% lettuce with a tiny sprinkle of feta cheese, 1 pepper and a few red sliced onions. Any good greek salad should come with greek olives, a wedge of feta and some warm pita bread. We had to special order pita bread and it showed up far too late to be used with a salad. When our meal came - they brought the wrong side dish, however due to the service issues - we didn't bother to ask for the correction. Perhaps other nights (other than a Monday will have better service and attention to detail.
Not clean, dirty cushions and dirty plastic windows - expected a lot more in La Jolla. Nice view through the dirty plastic, though food was pretty good.
The gyro plate was so so, my wife fish taco was bit to charred
In hurroto get us out, tortilla chips seemed stale, over priced for what we got
The view is lovely! Lots of loud kids & food is average. The octopus was dry and not fresh & they forgot the walnuts in the walnut salad :) but mahi was good!
