Eight course dinner was very special. Gourmet all the way. Possibly the very best in Honolulu. Highly recommended you go. Currently, they have room for only 14 guests untill full space opens.

What a fantastic experience! Food was amazing & the service was exceptional! Everything was explained to a tee- Substation’s are available.. we read, “don’t go there hungry” but, in actually, eight courses provides plenty of food.

Wonderful new and little place serving a prix fixe dinner that is super creative. It is a ten course including something called a pre-desert. Never heard of such a thing but hey, it was good. I highly recommend this when in Hawaii.

My wife picked Mugen as the special restaurant to celebrate her birthday. True, it was three days before her actual birthday( she loves to cook for both of our birthdays ) but the stars were aligned and Mugen was her choice. French/ Japanese is something we love and it’s a rarity on Oahu. There are only two seatings. We selected the 7:30. Mugen has not been officially reviewed on Oahu but both Yelp and Open Table have a Number of reviews. Our greeting was very special. A super charming young lady who also was our waitress greeted us in the best aloha spirit we’ve ever had. Her style was addicting making for a truly relaxing evening. Our host for the evening was Lee Kamimura the General Manager. His style was so endearing that we actually felt like were were having a fine dinning experience in his home. The menu was eight courses. Each unbelievable dish was created by the Executive Chef Jason Yamaguchi and his single sous chef. Being highly versed in wine we look for contrasting flavors, bouquets of equally delicate and layered scents and colors that are impressionistic to the eyes. We got all of this and a lot more. What also made the entire eventing so memorable was that total relaxing feeling that our hosts generated. We can’t wait to go back. Check out our photos!
We celebrated our friends 50th birthday there. Although expensive it was worth the price. It was a great experience , well done.
The food was excellent. Don’t go there hungry, however. The portions were very small. The ambiance was not good. In their defense the restaurant is still under construction and there were only a few tables available. One of the other guests was kind of obnoxious Apparently they knew one of the chefs. She appeared drunk and was goofing around with the chef . She was yelling profanities thinking she was being funny.

Everything was excellent. Only note is service could have been paced a bit better and wine pours for pairing might have been too generous.
Great food and great service. Ambiance a little off. Loud laughing and talking. Table next to coffee machine and kitchen. Although understand they’re still “under construction.”
Restaurant construction is not completed. Slight problem from 1st experience perspective.

An amazing pris fixe meal with delicious and very creative small tastes. Appropriately pricey but lower than most Chef's tasting menus we've been to. Two seatings of about 16 people each with courses served to everyone about the same time. So it's very intimate with excellent attentive staff. Our only recommendation is to soften the lighting. With such a small seating advance reservations is a must.

Interesting decor, kind of thrown together decor and cramped and way too bright. Two guests in my party were a little late and I felt like the chefs and staff were waiting to serve the entire restaurant at the same time and had to wait for our entire party. Was an odd vibe. Staff isn’t the most well trained or smooth in their delivery.
Food overall was good. Flavors good and technique excellent. Portions and value on the other hand not the best. I’ve had many course meals and varying prices all over the world. This seemed very skimpy yet over priced . If the service and atmosphere were as sophisticated and high as the price well then it might have been more acceptable to charge such a high price.
Atmosphere, decor and service not worth the price. Food was tasty and beautifully presented and technically cooked well but portions were way to small for the value.
Glad to try something new in town but meh...not worth it.

The food is creative, thoughtful, and beautifully presented however the restaurant is still quite new. The newness is reflected in the servers and setting. Much of the restaurant appears not to be open yet. There is no view and not much else to look at except the kitchen, which is open. I normally enjoy this feature in a restaurant but when we watched the staff take pictures of the food with their iPhone for half an hour (no exaggeration) before we had a bite of anything, I was less than impressed. The servers are good but need more fine dining training. The manager is excellent and really knows how to provide service. There were no prices on our menu nor any explanation of how the restaurant “worked” so we had to ask. This restaurant has great potential.
Amazing experience with well paired wine that enhanced the flavors of the meticulously prepared food. Chef has really outdone himself.

I was not informed beforehand that only a set menu is available. Food was delicious and well presented but the portions were quite small. At the end of the dinner, I felt like I have go eat a slice of pizza or a bowl of ramen to feel satisfied. Perhaps, the menu can include higher portion of starch. Service was wonderful!
Incredible tasting menu. A small restaurant with an incredible chef and sommelier. Wine pairing is top notch. We ate at Chef Mavro, La Mer, Orchids, and many other top restaurants in Hawaii this year and this was our favorite in terms of flavor, dish execution and wine. A gem in Hawaii. If Michelin was on the island, and if they keep the current standards, I could see them jump to 2 Michelin stars in one go. Highly recommended.
