About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Lively
  • Hot spot
From the creators of Sweet Basil in Vail Colorado comes a fresh, innovative new restaurant opening December 2012. Aptly named Mountain Standard, this rustic and relaxed tavern aims to set a new standard in the Vail valley by using an ancient form of cooking.

The majority of Mountain Standard’s menu will be prepared via the most primal cooking method: over an open and live wood fire. The only restaurant in the valley to devote themselves to this age-old way of cooking, the food at this exciting new restaurant will have rustic, bold and honest flavors, focusing on the purest ingredients in the Rocky Mountain region and beyond.

Service, like the cuisine, will have that perfect balance of providing a first class dining experience with a more casual vibe. There is no smoke and mirrors here - no fuss - just simple, honest, from the heart service and cooking. The beauty of the creek side location is mirrored by the high energy vibe of this dynamic restaurant.

Once we received our cooked shrimp the meal was good. service was fine. I do not like seeing a service charge on my bill without being told about. I was happy the manager took it off the bill.

we arrived 30 minutes after a Bravo event early the restaurant was no more than half full and hostess refused to seat us with the only excuse being that it wasnt our reservation time she was immature and seemed to want to exert her power. We had friends from out of town who we were excited to bring to Mountain Standard. The service once we sat was great. As a local resident and a frequent customer this was really off putting. An example of extremely poor customer service. I dont think we will be back for quite a while

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re sorry to hear that your recent visit began on a frustrating note, especially when you were excited to host guests with us. We understand how disappointing that must have felt. As a local and loyal guest, your support means a great deal to us. Please know it’s never our intention to make anyone feel unwelcome or dismissed. We do our best to seat guests early when the flow of service allows, and to ensure that we provide the best experience we do our best to maintain a steady flow. This helps us maintain the pace and quality of service we deliver to every table. That said, we’re very sorry if the communication around that policy came off as anything less than respectful or accommodating and we hope you join us again in the future.

I had a reservation. Arrived 10 minutes early. Hostess said we had to wait because the table was not set up. We went outside and waited. She said we had to wait another 10 minutes but would give us a great table near the creekside. Then a couple came in without a reservation but was a quickly seated at the table we had now waited 20 minutes for..... We were seated closer to the kitchen and further away from the creek. Did not want to make a scene, but I am a local and a regular customer, but certainly not treated the way!

Good overall, but fell short of my expectations. I read great reviews prior to dining and don’t get me wrong, the food was good but it didn’t blow me away. The pimento cheese appetizer was excellent. We ordered the piri piri chicken and the tri tip for entrees, and while both were good, they weren’t excellent. The temperature of both was lukewarm, and was close to cold by the time we finished eating. The chicken was very flavorful and well cooked, but very heavy on the garlic. When we ordered the tri tip, our server said it comes out medium rare and I confirmed that was good. I don’t think what we got was medium rare, and was borderline well done. The fritter was very good, albeit cold. Drinks were good, and service was good although a bit slow. I know you’re paying a premium for everything in Vail, but the experience overall just didn’t seem to justify the price tag.

Thank you Trent for sharing your feedback. We’re glad you enjoyed parts of your time with us, but we’re sorry other parts didn’t fully meet your expectations. We appreciate your comments about the service and drinks, and we apologize for the slow pace during your visit. We strive to provide great value and an exceptional experience, so your feedback is very helpful as we continue to improve. We hope you’ll consider giving us another try in the future.

We love Mountain Standard. However our dining experience on 7/3 was not quite the standard we are used to. We ordered drinks after being seated at our table and they took over 30 minutes to arrive. We ordered our food well after the drink order and our apps came out before the drinks. My husband ordered a second beverage near the end of our meal and that drink also took so long that he canceled that order. The server apologized for the bar being slow but I think at that point the drinks should have been comped. We ordered the Santa Maria trip which was overcooked.
Mountain StandardResponded on July 8, 2025
Thank you for your feedback and for being a loyal guest. We’re very sorry your experience with us didn’t meet the standards you expect from Mountain Standard. While the holiday weekend was exceptionally busy, it should not have impacted your service. We apologize for the long wait for drinks, the mix-up with your order, and the Santa Maria trip being overcooked. We understand how frustrating this must have been. We’re addressing these issues with our team and hope you’ll give us another chance to make it right.
