Mermaids & Cowboys
“Cowboys” plays homage to the historic ranches of California, from the Tejon Ranch, established well over 300 years ago, to the Carver Bowen Ranch established in 1872. Our restaurant tells a visual story to our diners with our pearl chandeliers, saddle-leather seating booth, teak furniture, and pearlescent fish-scaled bar. The photography on the walls pays tribute to the Japanese Ama Divers and the bold California Cowboys tending their ranch and cattle.

The decor is very cool, nice outdoor space with heaters. Our server was very friendly. The oysters were great! We had The crabcakes with bone marrow because I love bone marrow however I was a little disappointed because they are just crabcakes in a bone I couldn’t taste or see any bone marrow. The lamb lollipops were delicious the Brussels sprouts were great and the pumpkin brownie was to die for. overall I was pleased and definitely will be back.
Thank you so much for taking the time to review us! We will definitely pass on your words to our team and will be eagerly awaiting your return when all is safe to do so!
Very creative and delicious food.
Definitely will go again.
We had been told that this new restaurant had good food, so we thought we'd try it out. Well, the food was excellent in every way- interesting flavors and combinations of ingredients, beautifully presented. We will definitely come back and I have already recommended it to friends.
Bad service, waiter was annoyed we were there.
The food was wonderful and ambiance is great. Super friendly staff.
Holly! Thank you for your stellar review, we hope to deliver the same excellence on your next visit! Be on the look out for even more special advances in our ambiance, food and service next year.
The seafood was so fresh! I’m not a usual oyster eater but they were delicious! Everything we got was amazing from the shrimp to the oysters, mussels, steak, dessert, and drinks! The server was knowledgeable and helpful in helping us choose what to eat. We will definitely come back here.
One of the best meals I've had since moving to San Diego. The lambchops, chowder fries, and butter cake were to die for. Highly recommend. Our server, Durrell, I believe was also a gem. So happy this is in La Jolla!!
Electric menu with a great variety of dishes. It can be slightly confusing because they don’t directly differentiate between appetizers and entrees on the menu but it made for some good fun. I highly recommend the pork belly brûlée!
We tried this place on a whim for a double date. It was fabulous. I love their back-story of Japanese female divers (surf) and cowboys (turf). The menu was really interesting and delicious. The bone marrow crab cakes served in a bone with toasted bread were the best! We will definitely be back!
Max gave an exceptional experience and the food and drinks were amazing. Will absolutely be coming back!
Great staff, especially the oyster guy! Really fun place for drinks and ambiance but food is quite expensive and too salty - especially the chowder fries.
Service was terrible. Dinner was an appetizer in size yet full size price. Awful will not go back. Posted review on Yelp. Mgr wrote back an apology does not change a thing.
Was served frozen oysters.
Great dining experience. Max was very friendly and responsive to all our needs and suggestions. They are still in soft opening mode, but everything was practically flawless.
Cocktails are creative and food is delicious!
It was our first visit and we found the design and layout very pleasant. Our server was knowledgeable and very nice. I found the menu interesting. I had the fish and chips. The fish was halibut and nice and thick. The fries were good but a little too much salt. I’m looking forward to when they open for lunch. Great location!!!
Great food. Still early and they are still working the bugs out. They don’t have the timing quite right in bringing food out. Recc to go, but give them time to get better practicing on tourists rather than locals.
Classy and comfortable. Friendly, fun atmosphere. Great food and service!
Loved the Lobster Mac and Cheese and the Wagyu Beef Salad. Mike, Tyler and Lauren took great care of us.
Great food from an obviously talented chef. We had everything from very fresh tasty oysters to Grandma's butter cake and enjoyed it all
Fresh takes on classic foods.
Avocado risotto was terrific.
Bonemarrow crab cake was inventive and delicious.
We can't wait to see what comes next
Wanted to try new place. The only meat on the menu was a $42 filet plate or large steak to share. They were out of the lamb chops. That was it on the Cowboy side. We had the clam chowder which was very good. I ordered the lobster and burrata salad. A few large pieces to show but lots of greens. Not enough lobster and burrata. Hope they can expand their menu. Prices are on the high side.
Loved the ambience, service and vibe. They have a generous outdoor space (as well as a large indoor space) to make you feel safe. Their playlist was festive and the service was excellent.
I highly recommend choosing several dishes to share—we did and each of them was delicious! All four of us agreed that the food was fantastic!
I would definitely recommend it to friends and look forward to going back!
The portions were small, but food was great!
The amazing chef came out, as well as the manager and introduced themselves, made sure we understood the menu and gave us amazing recommendations-we liked it so much, we came back a second time and brought friends!
Food was delicious and unique!
Delicious food, fun cocktails, professional staff & gorgeous ambiance... can’t wait to get back!
Fantastic new option in beautiful La Jolla. We’ve been coming here for 20 years and this is our new favorite spot. Check out the menu for all the unique seafood and meat options and takes on your favorite dishes. The staff - and especially bartenders - are very focused on all your special requests. Highly recommend adding this to your short list when in La Jolla.
Very friendly. Great spot! Wonderful service. Food is unique and delicious.
We will frequent again! Oh yeah try the old fashion...
Great food and ambiance. You will need to be patient because this is a fairly new establishment.
Perhaps this is simply due to Mermaids and Cowboys being such a new restaurant, but overall our experience was not amazing especially for a bill over $250 for a party of 3. They sat up next to the hostess stand, right in the main walk way, so we enjoyed front row seats to a lot of buttocks in our faces. There was plenty of tables inside and they weren't sitting to full capacity so I'm unsure why they couldn't push some tables out of the way to ensure there isn't a table right next to the main path and hostess stand. In addition holding the 6ft social distancing.
Where we sat and the constant traffic we were definitely not socially distancing.
There wasn't any utensils at our table and when the hostess brought us utensils she only brought a fork. Perhaps she is new, but normally a knife is provided with the fork. Again perhaps she is new or new to the restaurant industry. This may simply be a training issue. Nothing against the hostess, she was very sweet.
The menu was limited and this maybe due to COVID. I'm hoping future state there are more options.
Overall the food was not bad in flavor. I'm a self proclaimed salt addict and I have to admit the food was even a little too salty for me. The scallops had sand/shell in it, but flavor was good. My husband got the 48 oz steak and said it was delicious.
I would like to go back, maybe next year and allow some time for them to adjust. Concept is super cute, but overall not what I wanted or expected.
Food really good new and interesting flavors. Tables and chairs a bit cold. Flimsy paper napkins a real turn off and no table covering too. Staff very friendly and eager to please. This will be a nice addition to La Jolla dining scene they just have a couple of easy tweaks to make it perfect.
Great! Food was amazing. Chef is 5 star
