Maria Jose Peruvian Gourmet
With an emphasis on having the freshest ingredients and an artful presentation, we created a menu that reflects the Peruvian spirit by delivering familiar dishes to friends in the Valley.
Next to our bar, we have a stylish and comfortable tapas bar section that offers a chance to relax to tastefully prepared "tapas" paired with wines that our clients have come to love.
We are a family friendly, casual fine dining, PET-FRIENDLY, California adopted and proudly Peruvian restaurant. See you soon!
We have been to the the restaurant a couple of times before, but tonight we were celebrating a friend’s birthday. The restaurant and the wait staff are friendly, engaging, and provide a nice experience, through their Food, their personal interactions with the customers, and their warm hospitality. We love Maria Jose!
Daniel, thank you for choosing us to celebrate your friend's birthday. We are happy to know that your experience with us has been positive. See you soon!
The food was fantastic - real Peruvian flavors, just like when we traveled in Peru.
The service and ambiance plus the food makes us want to return again.
The kitchen and wait staff will know about your review. Thank you uclaben, hope to see you soon!
This was our first visit to this restaurant. Great dining service by our server Trevor. Maria Jose is an exceptional restauranteur and kudos to her creative chef! Definitely worth dining here again. Thanks Maria Jose for adding a flair to dining in the Coachella Valley with your delicious Peruvian Gourmet dining!
Hello John, thank you so much for your kind words. We really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience... And we agree, Trevor is truly a gem to have on our team. We look forward to seeing you again in MJ.
If you love fresh fish this is the restaurant to dine at. Delicious with a lot of variety.
Excellent service too.
Thank you very much! We appreciate your recommendation!
Although the food was very tasty, (tad bit salty), they did their best to deter people from returning. The major problem was the menu vs. what was served and the inability of the wait staff to adequately describe the food. There were 3 of us, and none of us got what the menu advertised. One ordered beef stew w/mashed potatoes - was served beef stew with rice, another ordered a beef dish with steamed yucca & rice - was served french fries, the third ordered spaghetti w/seafood cooked with tomatoes, garlic & onions - was served spaghetti w/seafood in a white sauce. In addition one of the costumers asked the waiter to explain one of the Peruvian dishes & he was unable to explain the dish. We had to request our drinks 2 or 3 times before we were served. In addition there were no napkins on the table and we had to request napkins twice before getting them. The restaurant has great potential, however they definitely need to work on there service and follow through or they will loose their clientele.
Hello Nancy, we value your feedback. We are working shoulder to shoulder with our servers and kitchen staff to guarantee a high quality service to every customer regardless if it's a big celebration or a weekday dinner. Please accept our sincere apologies for any inconvenience you may have experienced and let us offer you complimentary appetizers for 2 on your next visit. Thank you!
The Peruvian celebration was very good, Susana and Julio made the 198 🇵🇪celebration a very special event, we all enjoyed the music, the Country folklore and the distinctive Peruvian cuisine. It was a night that was very pleasant no only to Peruvian but to people of other nationalities that were in attendance.
We had a great time NellyC! Thank you for coming and for being part of our first Peruvian Independence celebration!
Unfortunately this was a disappointing experience for my family. We were excited to support this local Peruvian restaurant and celebrate Peru Independence Day! The music and patrons were warm and friendly. The service from the host and wait staff was not unfortunately. Our 19 month old was hungry, we waited for over 30 minutes to put in our food order. We were able to put an order of Pisco Sour when water and cancha was served to us at our table. The 2 Pisco Sours were never served. My husband tried to waive a waiter down to attend to us and he was ignored. He then excused himself with our child and talked to the host. To my surprise and disappointment she was not apologetic nor warm to my husband when he shared our experience with her. Regretfully, we will not support Maria José Peruvian Gourmet due to our unkind experience.
We are very sorry you had a bad experience at our restaurant. Last Sunday was a very special day for us because of all the people who came to celebrate Peru Independence Day. The restaurant was at its full capacity, we had to arrange extra tables at out outdoor patio. We did our best to offer a quality service to everyone but fell short with you. We apologize! Please give us a chance to redeem ourselves. Kindly accept complimentary appetizers for 2 and a glass of wine or beer on your next visit.
We went for the Independence Day celebration. Due to that the menu was limited. It was all good but would like to experience a full menu
Great food great people caught them on a day they were preparing for an evening event
Will definitely go back
Hello Richard. Yes, we were getting ready for Peruvian Independence celebration and the logistics were somehow different than usual. Thank you for your patience, we are definitely looking forward to see you again.
Read and heard all about this restaurant and couldn’t wait to go. Very disappointing. The service was extremely slow. It took forever to get a glass of water! The room was extremely warm and the meal was overly salty... almost difficult to eat. Wish it wasn’t so... but as a person who dines out often I could not recommend this place.
excellent cuisine authentic preparation. great hosts.
Thank you PAULR!
First visit- Tried one 1 Ceviche 1 Carpacia and 1 Salad
Very pleasant Service & environment.
ALL EXCELLENT- will certainly be returning.
We Found a little gem with this place. The owner, Maria Jose, was charming and delightful to talk to. The food was very tasty, the service was excellent (thank you, Alfredo!) and the decor was very nice. Have a nice lunch or dinner at this beautiful Peruvian restaurant!
James, thank you very much for your kind words. We'll pass your message to Alfredo and staff. Hope to see you soon!
Outstanding quality and tasty Peruvian cuisine! Seafood spaghetti is unbelievable. The flavor of sauce, pasta and seafood combined together is amazing! A must try for anyone!
The Seafood Spaghetti is one of our "Hero Dishes". We are very happy to see that you liked it too. Thank you for your kind review and recommendation!
Superb ceviche, excellent take on Peruvian classic dishes, and friendly service. It is wonderful to have such an excellent example of Peruvian cuisine in this community.
We are glad you liked it. Thank you for taking the time to leave this review!
Hands-down, absolutely the BEST seafood I've ever had in the desert.
Thank you very much!
Delicious food, attentive staff, you feel you are in someone’s home! Although this restaurant has only been open a short time, I feel as soon as the word gets out, I will have to wait to get a reservation!
The fish dishes are all unique, something the valley has not experienced yet. I highly recommend it, even though it is located off the beaten track., it’s a destination restaurant , and I am sure it will be become very popular.
Hats off to the owner, Maria Jose!!
dawnbaby, thank you for your kind words! We are very happy to read that you had a nice experience here. Hope to see you soon!
Great service, enjoyed personal attention from Maria and the ambience is sophisticated and calm.
Joshua, thank you for coming and for leaving this review.

Hello MichikoK, Thank you for your kind words! Happy birthday to your boyfriend! Hope to see you soon.
Amazing as always.
Food was very good Maria explained different dishes on the menus. Loved the beer and the Peruvian ice cream will be back. Great service.
Thank you very much!
Nice staff and good service but the food lacked flavor the first time I’ve ever seen Lomo Saltado made without French fries
I never imagine finding peruvian food on the desert! Totally recommend it!
Thank you very much!
Our dining experience was incredible! Every dish tried was amazingly perfect in taste and presentation. The flavor in all of the dishes was magnificent to the point of wanting more of everything, even though the portions are quite abundant already! The owner, Maria Jose is absolutely pleasant and delightful to speak with, and her commitment to excellence is most noticeable, as it carries over to her servers and kitchen staff as well! I cannot say enough how enjoyable this dining experience was, and will certainly be back regularly to try more new authentic Peruvian dishes!!
Hello egb7, We are glad to know that you had an incredible experience dining with us. We will pass your review to our staff. Thank you very much, and see you soon!
We were in Lima last year for a few days and had some remarkable food. It is said to be the best city in South America to eat in and I believe it. This place knows how to bring those dining ideas to another country. We each had a seafood appetizer. Mine was cold shrimp and scallops in a delicate sauce. My wife had a shrimp dish with thinly sliced pickled red onion. They gave us two small cups of salsa, each of which were delicious and tangy. The green sauce(sorry, I don't know the names) was some sort of chili pepper with cilantro & some other things & was good on both fish dishes.
My wife ordered a grilled salmon with a date glaze on it - the dates were also grilled - and although a bit sweet, the fish was perfectly cooked and the green chili sauce made the salmon soar. I had the chaufa royale. Chaufa is the Peruvian version of fried rice with some great variations from South America. The rice is small grain with plenty of veggies and lots of calamari and shrimp. It is moist and beautifully cooked and presented. This would be a good dish for the table if you have four or five in your party. We both took leftovers home.
There was a decent crowd for a Sunday night but there was a problem with air conditioning. They did apologize for that but it was not hot, just a bit warm and still. It did not cause us any discomfort but I am glad the lady told us what was going on.
Give this place a try if you like Latin American food. It is worth the effort.
We are eager to go back and try more of the items on the menu. This is a fine addition to dining in the desert cities.
Hello Vance, thank you for your comments and for your patience with the A/C that day!
I ate here recently with a group of 6 and had a wonderful time. We came for restaurant week and enjoyed trying an array of their foods - all were delicious. Servers were knowledgeable and service was great! Cute location and nice ambiance, easy to hear everyone at the table. We will be back!
Thank you! Hope to see you soon.
Food was exceptional. Mediocre service; needs improvement.
Hello GGZplace2dine, We are constantly working on achieving the best possible service for our customers. We are sorry to learn this was not your case. Thank you for your comment!
The best Peruvian food in Southern California. I just happened to find this gem on my search for restaurant in Palm Desert area. It’s in a shopping center that is going through some difficult time. Most stores are closed. It’s a little hard to find but once you’re in it’s heavenly. The service needs to improve but food is the best. We started with ceviche mixto, which was fresh and tasty. I had beef saltado and my friends had fish. Every dish was delicious. I will definitely go back and also refer to my friends.
Wow! Thank you very much Jay. We will pass your review to our chef. Thank you for the referrals!
A bit hard to find as they are located inside a Mall. The food was excellent. Great service. The menu was explained to us in detail. I had the duck which was done to perfection along with the rice which was very tasty. Had the ice cream which was made from a Peruvian fruit. All in all we will be going back and do recommend this restaurant.
Thank you Monika! "Lucuma" is the Peruvian fruit your ice cream was made of.
The restaurant is a bit of a challenge to find.... but well worth the effort. The restaurant is modern but comfortable. And the food is outstanding and interesting. Everything we had was delicious. The sauces amazing. Take time to find this place and give it a try.
Thank you for your kind words lynnsloh!
Yes, we really do come here this often, we’re not shills!
Maria Jose has become our go-to place for a casual yet elegant and delicious dinner with friends. We are pleased to see that our secret is out, and people are discovering this treasure of a restaurant. We’re looking forward to further exploring the new menu, and we wish Maria Jose continued success.
Thank you Don! Happy to be your go-to place!!
The restaurant is located in a building in transition with a significant number of closed stores making the access to restaurant ambiance a bit sad. However, this does not detract anything from the restaurant itself. It has a sparse but welcoming decor, excellent service (though on our visit there were only three tables occupied), interesting and delicious menu with the plates well presented and very tasty. At this time, there is only a wine and beeer license with full bar planned. Our party of four agreed that the food, service and quiet ambiance was very good and intend to return soon. We recommend it for all it's elements.
Tdrex thank you for your words and recommendation!
Nice food and atmosphere but very slow service which didn't make for a good experience. Overall average meal.
The food is very good however, until the service improves we won't return.
food was very good but service was awful on many levels. Would not go back
Hello Edie, we are sorry you didn't have a good experience at the restaurant. We want you to know that important changes have been made since last week and our service has improved considerably. Please consider visiting us again.
Very good, authentic Peruvian cuisine. The owner makes you feel like a guest in her home. We loved it!
Thank you Gary, hope to see you soon!
I just happened to see this restaurant searching open table yesterday. My husband and I went and we were very impressed. The owner Maria is the hostess. She was very delightful and sat us down. We had good service and the food was excellent
This is a new neighborhood gem. Food was delicious, as was service. Please support this new restaurant.
Thank you very much Ojailyn!
This is our second time at Maria Jose. Everyone enjoyed their meal. The steak and fish were really delicious. I love the presentation of the fish on wooden planks. The empanada was especially tasty. As they have become more popular having been open only a few months. The service has suffered from not enough help on the floor. We waited a bit long for our entrees. But I don't fault the food at all. We will be back.
Thank you John! We are committed to provide the best possible service to our customers. Please accept our apologies. We are making changes to improve the service. Hope to see you soon!
