Local Roots (Virginia) - A Farm to Table Restaurant
Our roots are deeply embedded in the lush farmlands of Southwest Virginia. They are nourished by modern-day farmers who employ age-old techniques, hard-working heroes who nurture not only the people, but the land as well. We've gotten to know these local farmers and are better for it. They help us keep time with the rhythms of the seasons. Sun-ripened tomatoes in the summer, hearty root vegetables in the winter - we serve what is fresh and natural at the peak of its flavor.
Our roots are fed by a philosophy we call S.O.L.E.: Sustainable, Organic, Local, Ethical. It's a principle that guides us as we decide from whom to source our meats and vegetables. It also informs our beverage program.

Paying more for a terrific farm to table dining experience is worth it in our opinion. Local Roots is one of our favorite "occasion" restaurants to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, or special occasions. The service is friendly and attentive, and we enjoy the creative combinations of seasonal ingredients.
Beautiful space and people; amazing cocktails and delicious food. We love this place! It is a treat to eat here.
Absolutely fantastic - from the attentive service to the delicious food!
My husband and I dine at Local Roots often, and stopped in for a snack (cheese plate) and a cocktail. Everything was very clean, there was plenty of social distancing, and masks were worn by staff at all times. Food was good and drinks were delicious. The only issue we had was that I asked for a table by the window on my reservation and when we arrived, they had not prepped the table for us for some reason? It was set (after we were made to feel a little guilty) and we were seated within 5 minutes. No big deal, but why write special requests for seating when the note is ignored on the reservation...? Otherwise, good time.
Service and food were outstanding as usual. Thank you for another great time. 🥂
Thanks for all your visits and for taking the time to let us know how much you enjoyed your return experience. Cheers and see you soon!
We visited this adorable restaurant during our visit to Roanoke and we fell in love with the food. Very cute place and delicious plates!
Thanks for falling in love with our food and for taking the time to leave a review. We hope to see you again on your next Roanoke visit!
Thank you so much for dining with us and for your positive rating. We hope to see you again soon!
My wife and I ate at Local Roots for our 30th wedding anniversary. Our experience was outstanding on all fronts; food, ambience and food. Seeing as we are still in the middle of the COVID situation, we were somewhat uncertain how it would all work. Our fears were put at ease very quickly. Adequate distancing from other patrons, employees practicing safe handing procedures and taking the situation seriously. It was well worth the trip. Its important to support local restaurants because they are buying their ingredients from local farmers.
Thank you so much for celebrating your anniversary at Local Roots and for taking the time to leave your outstanding feedback. We're so glad we could provide an excellent experience while following our local health guidelines and making you feel comfortable. We hope to see you again soon for the next occasion. Cheers!
Inventive farm to table cuisine with decent inexpensive wine list.
Thank you so much for dining with us and for your positive rating. We're so pleased you enjoyed the farm to table meal and wine. We hope to see you again soon!
We had the bison flank (several flank strips) and the scallops. We wouldn't have known it wasn't regular beef if we hadn't ordered it ourselves. It was very tender and delicious. The scallops were also great. The accompaniments for both dishes were also great and the tomato medallions were crazy flavorful. I'm curious what they do to make them so tasty. The dishes weren't too big so we had room for dessert(s). We're from DC so we're used to desserts being around $10 or more. At $4 a pop, we got three - the brownie, the bread pudding, and the chocolate peanut butter ice cream (with a nice salty touch that made it that much better). All were great. Usually we would favor the brownie but the other two were so good that the brownie may have been the third best.
Thank you so much for dining with us and for the rave review. We're so glad you enjoyed both dishes and were able to sample the three desserts that evening. We hope to see you again the next time you are in town!
LR is always fantastic. Everyone does a great job marking the experience fantastic. Food is out of this world.
Thank you so much for dining with us and for providing a 5 star review! We're so thrilled you've had fantastic experience every time and find the food "out of this world." Hope to see you again soon!
excellent food, thoughtfully prepared, visually appealing as well as tasting great. service was wonderful.

Excellent time! Really enjoyed eating out again! Thanks so much for the great food and service!
Thank you so much for dining with us and for your 5 star review. We hope to see you again soon!
There weren’t a lot of choices for Sunday brunch. I ordered the ramen and the chicken was too salty that it ruined the taste of the ramen. The chocolate brownie was good though and the service was great.
Thank you for dining with us for brunch and for providing your feedback. We're disheartened that we missed the mark on the ramen dish. We'll be sure to share your experience with the chef so that we can make any necessary corrections. In the future, please let your server know if you're not 100% satisfied and we will gladly remake the dish or offer another one. Thanks again - we can only learn through our mistakes. We hope to see you return.
This was the best meal I've had in years, and I live in Philadelphia, which is a great food town.
Thank you so much for dining with us and for your five star rating. We're so happy to compare to Philly. We hope to see you again soon!
It was such a delight. Everything was perfect. Service, food, atmosphere. We were traveling back home to Nashville and stopped to spend the night in Roanoke. We made reservations and are so glad we did. The cocktails and wine were as described but better. The waiter’s wine red was exactly what we asked for. The food was amazing. It was the BEST charcuterie plate I have ever seen. An amazing variety including a duck liver mousse that I should have asked for more of in a jar to go? We also had the mussels. The broth had some Benton ham which MADE it. Such a wonderful evening. We hope we go through Roanoke again so we can eat there.
Thank you so much for dining with us and for your five star rating. We're so glad we could provide a wonderful dining experience on your trip home to Nashville. We hope to see you again soon!
We had a wonderful first dinner out since the pandemic hit. Delicious food and excellent service. Food was so fresh and delicious. Terrific!!
Thank you so much for dining with us and for your five star rating. We're so glad your first night out was terrific. We hope to see you again soon!
Another amazing Sunday Brunch. We both tried the French toast and would order it again. The staff was friendly and more than ready to answer any questions we had. We will be back.
The grouper was life altering!
Awesome! Klaire was our server and she took such good care of us. Was always one step ahead of us. Making great recommendations. Food was spot on. Bison was incredible, cooked perfectly. House made pasta was to die for. Loved it!
Our chicken dish was very dry and not worth the price!
Always amazing, food, drinks, atmosphere, you name it!
Awesome as always! Sunday Brunch is back! So glad to be able to sit down and enjoy a quiet Sunday Brunch (and not have to cook) Love Local Roots!
Thank you for your visit and your positive rating. We're so happy to have brunch up and running again as well. We hope to see you again soon!
This is one of my favorite restaurants in the Roanoke area. Great food, fresh ingredients, always a pleasure
Always a great experience! Brunch is our favorite - but dinner is always great too!
We last ate here the weekend that restaurants in Roanoke were allowed to have dine-in services again, following the coronavirus lockdown. My wife and I love the food and drinks here and we highly recommend you visit! The quality of the food and service is outstanding. My only criticism is that the menu could be broader; there hasn't been enough variation on dishes available on the different occasions that we've visited.
Everything is so fresh and homemade. We have always enjoyed dining her. Service is also very good.
Great experience and we felt the environment was safe and clean with all proper procedures in place during their phase 2 reopening.
This was the first night of them reopening for dining in. The menu was limited but the choices provided something for everyone. The servers were friendly and knowledgeable as always. Can't wait to go back. Local restaurants are the best!
Wait staff is always exceptional. The food is always creative and delicious. This visit was no exception. The complimentary birthday dessert added to the festivities.
We had a wonderful experience and I especially appreciated the complimentary dessert.
The waitress was very good and the food was fabulous!!!
Excellent food and excellent service. Great place!
The roasted vegetable soup was probably the best soup we have ever had! And the ham and Swiss sandwich was probably the best sandwich we have ever eaten! New favourite place!
Thanks for joining us for lunch and for the wonderful feedback. We're so proud to be listed among your favorites! Hope to see you again soon!
Lunch at Local Roots tends to be less crowded than dinner and offers some interesting combinations of mostly locally grown ingredients. The daily soup special with root vegetables this time of year is always yummy as is the flat bread pizza which varies in toppings from day to day but is certainly NOT a typical pizza. Prices are reasonable as portions are generally large ( I brought home half of the flat bread pizza it was so filling) but using mostly local ingredients is not cheap. Burgers are excellent as was the ham and swiss sandwich on brioche with aioli.
Although not a vegetarian restaurant, they will accommodate vegetarian and vegan dinners.
Thank you so much for joining us for lunch and your positive feedback. We hope to see you again soon!
Delicious dinner as usual with fabulous service. Klaire was our server, she was excellent and knowledgeable about the menu, and we appreciate the support from all staff. The brioche bread pudding was so worth saving room. Another successful date night!
Thank you so much for your visit and your positive review. We're so happy you enjoyed your dinner and will be sure to commend Klaire on her excellent service. We hope to see you again soon! Thank you!
Out of town on business with a group of mixed palates so we rolled the dice. Boy, did we win big!! Service was amazing, food was delish and ambiance was sublime. Wine list, beer selection and cocktail program was above par. Because everything is farm to table, the menu changes daily so be sure to look on line in case there are real food issues. It is not an unlimited menu but we all found one or more dishes each. Service team was great; we felt very attended to.
Friendly servers, good food but pacing between courses was way too fast. We were enjoying our charcuterie starter when not half way through the entrees showed up. It was definitely a buzz kill to an enjoyable evening. (Please train wait staff to work with kitchen for the patrons who prefer a more leisurely dining experience)
The kitchen could also use a better ventilation system. Don’t wear anything you don’t want to smell greasy for days. We left wreaking of cooked food - disappointing considering all the high marks given by others.
The scallops were spectacular. The wine selection is very good, especially for by the glass options. The rye rolls were just okay. They seemed like a first attempt to me. We also ordered the pork which was over cooked, even dry.
The desserts are certainly worth coming back for. We had panna cotta that was very well done, and the bread pudding was excellent. The cinnamon ice cream was sublime.
