Le Coq is James Beard Best Chef finalist Tara Monsod’s new wave French steakhouse. Inspired by the modern Parisian culinary landscape, chef Tara reinvents classic dishes through her signature approach, blending cross-cultural references and ingredients for a distinctly SoCal expression of French cuisine. Bright touches and hyper-seasonal products ground the menu with San Diego style, while nods to chef Tara’s Southeast Asian background are interwoven throughout. Located in downtown La Jolla in a 1930’s historic building with exposed brick walls, steel trusses, and a barrel-vaulted ceiling. Into this storied shell is inserted a posh 1970’s diner club.

    I would definitely come back here. The service was phenomenal thanks to our server Thomas H and the hostess was very warm, kind and welcoming. Food was delicious and the ambience was very nice. Great experience!

    We went to celebrate Father’s Day. They sat us at a nice booth as requested. The service was good and server attentive. My husband had the fried oyster which looked big but mostly batter. I had the tuna tartar which I was told tuna would be cubed like poke but it was not. Tuna was mushy not firm. Both appetizers were overpriced. My husband had the steak frites which he said was good. I had the hamburger which was over salted. I had to request they remake it. It was better but still salty. If I had high blood pressure I think I may be sick from the amount of salt. Salt does not give flavor to a dish. Terrible and overall disappointing. We went since we enjoyed animae restaurant.

    Le Coq is a beautiful steakhouse restaurant, located a few steps away from Prospect Street, in a beautiful industrial building. It offers a wide variety of French inspired dishes. While service was good (though a tiny bit slow at times), the food was a little disappointing. My party ordered two Steak Frites and one Steak Tartare. The Tartare was good, but the Steak Frites was were they were some issues. The flavors were good BUT everything was extremely salty. The sauce, the steak crust, the fries. We also found out that the fries have Chicken Bouillon seasoning, so if you keep Kosher, Halal, Vegetarian or Vegan, be aware if you decide to order a side of fries. It was so salty we had to send it back and asked for fries with no seasonings, which those still came back with a heaping amount of salt. We then had some desserts too, the Pistachio Paris Brest, chocolate mousse, and cheesecake. The first two were good, but not exceptional, and I would pass on the cheesecake personally. It lacked flavor and was too salty. All in all, I would recommend for them to lay off the salt, and to make it known the fries have Chicken Bouillon and make it optional. If that were the case, it would be a 10/10 for me!

    We had an enjoyable dining experience at Le Coq. Overall, the food and wine were delicious and the service was excellent. We dined early so the restaurant was not full and the noise level was low and conducive to a relaxing meal. We shared the onion tart as an appetizer and I enjoyed a whole red snapper while my husband enjoyed the roasted chicken with a mild curry sauce. There were several menu items that we would like to try in the future.

    Dined when first opened and had a great experience. Went back last night and the food was not good. The hamachi smelled and tasted fishy. Yuck! The filet was rubbery. The pink snapper, celery salad, fresh baguette and drinks were great. But with all the food choices in San Diego I will not be back based on steak and hamachi. Staff is super friendly and helpful.

    Really went in with the highest expectations. James Beard nominee… while it wasn’t terrible, it wasn’t spectacular nor memorable. Cocktails were ok. Fried oysters were mostly breading and needed salt. Very bland. Also got the onion tart as a starter. This one had too much salt and short rib overpowered. Had the mussels for my entree. This was good. Loved the broth and the greens. We had the basque cheesecake for dessert. Had a strange aftertaste. Idk ; I’ve had amazing basque cheesecakes before. This wasn’t it. Maybe I had pumped it up in my head too much and it disappointed

    Hot spot in La Jolla. As the evening wore on it got louder and louder. Service was really good, food was ok. We had muscles, pate and duck confit (slightly overcooked). Nothing super memorable or repeatable. I would head to the Fishery in PB for better muscles. Blue Boheme for confit. It's a pretty large dining room so it's good for last minute busy weekend reservations. The bar is very cool.
