Le Coq is James Beard Best Chef finalist Tara Monsod’s new wave French steakhouse. Inspired by the modern Parisian culinary landscape, chef Tara reinvents classic dishes through her signature approach, blending cross-cultural references and ingredients for a distinctly SoCal expression of French cuisine. Bright touches and hyper-seasonal products ground the menu with San Diego style, while nods to chef Tara’s Southeast Asian background are interwoven throughout. Located in downtown La Jolla in a 1930’s historic building with exposed brick walls, steel trusses, and a barrel-vaulted ceiling. Into this storied shell is inserted a posh 1970’s diner club.

Space is great, staff too. Great selection of wines by the glass. The Wednesday's only table side chicken flambé is not to be missed!

Le Coq is a real gem. We've been there 3 times now and it has been excellent each time. Staff is great and knowledgeable. Food is inventive and creative but they also have perfectly-executed, time-honored favorites, like the fantastic Dry Aged Ribeye we had recently. The Onion Tart (with Short Rib in it) is superb. The atmosphere is lively but never seems loud. Quite a fun and wonderful place!

Special food, but "over-service" became annoying. Lost count of the number of bodies interrupting our conversation to ask if they could take an order, take away plates that weren't yet empty. When the restaurant is only half full, there's a weird feeling of being rushed needlessly when servers are swarming the table. Needs better balance, but the look and vibe are a fun reboot from Herringbone.

Our server gave us the best recommendations that night and we left full and fully satisfied, we came here for the roast chicken dinner but we instead ate the short ribs that my wife and I shared plus the tuna ceviche and salad. The tuna ceviche was so good that my wife wants to keep for herself. All and all it was the best dinner experience for my wife and I
