Le Coq is James Beard Best Chef finalist Tara Monsod’s new wave French steakhouse. Inspired by the modern Parisian culinary landscape, chef Tara reinvents classic dishes through her signature approach, blending cross-cultural references and ingredients for a distinctly SoCal expression of French cuisine. Bright touches and hyper-seasonal products ground the menu with San Diego style, while nods to chef Tara’s Southeast Asian background are interwoven throughout. Located in downtown La Jolla in a 1930’s historic building with exposed brick walls, steel trusses, and a barrel-vaulted ceiling. Into this storied shell is inserted a posh 1970’s diner club.

Really went in with the highest expectations. James Beard nominee… while it wasn’t terrible, it wasn’t spectacular nor memorable. Cocktails were ok. Fried oysters were mostly breading and needed salt. Very bland. Also got the onion tart as a starter. This one had too much salt and short rib overpowered. Had the mussels for my entree. This was good. Loved the broth and the greens. We had the basque cheesecake for dessert. Had a strange aftertaste. Idk ; I’ve had amazing basque cheesecakes before. This wasn’t it. Maybe I had pumped it up in my head too much and it disappointed

Hot spot in La Jolla. As the evening wore on it got louder and louder. Service was really good, food was ok. We had muscles, pate and duck confit (slightly overcooked). Nothing super memorable or repeatable. I would head to the Fishery in PB for better muscles. Blue Boheme for confit. It's a pretty large dining room so it's good for last minute busy weekend reservations. The bar is very cool.

Maybe my new favorite restaurant in SD. Service (Thomas) was perfect. Food amazing! Menu had options for everyone. We liked it better than Animae, which used to be our favorite. Wine list was the only needs improvement.

We had a wonderful experience, girls night out, having appetizers and main courses and wine. The food was presented like perfect works of art. The onion tart tasted like French onion soup with perfectly cooked crust. We had the steak fruits and the curry chicken. Both were filled with flavor and nutrition and beautifully displayed. Just a wonderful experience all the way around really funky cool environment. By the time we left it was absolutely packed solid at the bar. People were having a great time. We’ll definitely go back again.

First time visiting Le Coq. Booked a table in dining room but arrived early to request seats at the bar. Bar was full so we went and grabbed a drink at Eddie V's and upon our return, seats were being held for us at the bar - very nice! LJ at the bar was great - made excellent recommendations! We had a scallop ceviche special, the baguette (house-made) was to die for! Then we shared a Denver cut steak (some of the steak was a bit tough), sides of mushrooms & onions and frites. The frites with aoli were incredible (not a morsel left)! For dessert, we shared the rice pudding - yum! Wine suggestions were on point. All in all, a great dinner and great ambiance.

Enjoyed Animae much BETTER. The duck confit was not crispy on the outside and tasted the vinegar immensely.
