5:15 pm reservation was honored promptly. Social distancing appeared to be in effect. Service was slow. Partner waited quite awhile for his beer and we waited well past an hour for our food. I ordered the Lava Rock steak ($31) with an addition of scallops ($9). Steak, which I ordered rare, was overdone, but still tasty. I placed the scallops on the lava rock to brown, as they looked under-cooked. I'm on a low-carb diet, and a side salad substitution was made with no problem. My partner ordered a Cuban sandwich, which he would not order again because the meat was thickly sliced. The server did not monitor our dining status, and we waited a long time for the check. When presenting the credit card, the server put it into a hand-held device, where a 20% tip and tax were automatically added. I did not see a way to change the amount and it was embarrassing to try to lower the tip with the waiter looking at me. After I agreed to the total charge, a rating scale appeared. The server held out his hand to take the device before I had a chance to complete the rating scale. This left me with a negative overall dining experience, although my meal was good!
Food was decent, but service was very slow. I'm sure due to being short staffed.
I’m general it is a great place to go. Good food great service and fair prices.
Great spot. Thanks!
Even with a reservation, it still took about an hour and a half to get our food, with no explanation.
Terrible service. We booked 1130 and had no indication that they would not be serving lunch until 1200. They had a weird finger foods menu between breakfast and lunch. We were in a rush as we had to check out of our hotel by 1300. When we told the waiter our predicament he didn’t care and was very rude and matter-of factly claimed he couldn’t take order till 1200 and that it would take 25-30mins. We left immediately
The food was good, came out fast & the prices were very reasonable. Drinks were creative and very tasty.
The steak was superb and I loved having it come sizzling on the stone. We were quite pleasantly surprised by how good everything was!
We were there three times while staying in Kihei. Waitstaff was 5 star every time. Food was incredible.
Great views. It was our favorite restaurant on the island for any price range.
Cool place, nice view!
Loved this place - the food was great and the service was amazing!
The bar was nice and they have food drinks. Food took forever once seated and service wasn’t what it should have been.
We enjoyed this place. Had lower expectations based on the reviews, and were pleasantly surprised. Upstairs, tropical outdoor seating with views, or inside is a bar atmosphere with tv’s and pool tables (live bands at night, not sure when). We sat outside and were immediately brought waters, waiter soon arrived, very friendly and we ordered happy hour drinks (Mai Tai’s) and some appetizers (surprised to know entire appetizer menu was half off). We got coconut shrimp and nachos, and I ordered the seared ahi app as my entree, it was amazing. Everyone was happy with their dinners. Overall experience was great, we would return!
Lunch didn't start out well for our party of five. We asked for a table closer to the front of the restaurant but were told those tables were reserved for people with a reservation. Uh, I had an Open Table reservation. Three moves later, we were at a better table. The food was reasonably priced. The best item we ordered was the Ahi Nachos, and the least flavorful was the Caesar salad. The burger and the fish sandwich were somewhere in between. It's kind of a dive but if you find yourself in Kihei and in no hurry, Lava Rock will do.
We’ve been here a couple times, overlooks the ocean, staff is amazing, and food is just as good.
Local fun cool area fun bars around for afterward
Took so much time for our food!
Our waiter was so great and this place has a nice chill vibe. Happy hour drinks and appetizers were great. Delicious food and fresh air. Great place!
We had a great server from Portugal. Great food. Loved the pork and really crispy fries.
Food was very good. Poke bowl was about as fresh as it could get. Ribs and chicken dishes were very good. Service was a little slow. Terrible Martinis though. The bartender needs a lesson on how to make them properly. Other than that, great place for a nice outdoor dinner
Our Reservations was made 3 months early, just being prepared with the reopening of the state after Covid. Everything is busy! The food was tasteful and served hot, drink were cold. Services… was the issue.
We were able to sit outside and enjoy a breeze and $2 mimosas while we waited for our food. Breakfast tasted good and the server was very friendly.
View of sunset and festive ambiance.
The lava fries are worth the trip!
We were sat right away and had a great view. The busser came by with water and said a server would take our drink order. We waited and waited, almost 20 minutes. We were finally able to flag someone down and it seemed that there was confusion of what server had our table. I noticed a similar issue with the table next to us. We finally got our drinks and my Manhattan tasted like it was watered down. Food was ordered and mistakes were make. The onion soup is among the worst I've ever had and the fish in the grilled fish tacos was too salty. The chicken fajitas were good, but they were supposed to be teriyaki chicken which I could barely taste. Over all, it was a disappointing experience.
Came to Lava Rock for birthday dinner 7/17/21. Staff was very attentive from the check in process. LUCAS our waiter was awesome and extremely attentive. Made us feel comfortable and very welcoming. Had such a great evening that we ended up coming back the next morning for breakfast. Once again staff very accommodating as we were in a hurry to get to the airport. WE will definitely be coming back next time that we are Maui!!!
Great food and atmosphere, we had so much fun! Would go again!
We had the Hawaii chicken. Which was a teriyaki chicken that was really tender and delicious. The vegetables (carrots and broccoli) were cooked just the right amount. Was very happy with the quality of the meal!
The ambiance was very tiki bar so was just right for being in Maui but the view was over a back parking lot with not much of a view.
Our server was fantastic!
Food following snorkeling. Fun atmosphere for our group with excellent service.
It took 20 minutes for our server to come to our table. We immediately ordered food and drinks. The drinks cane in a few minutes, but the food took another 40 minutes to arrive. The server did not check back once to see if our food was ok. I had to ask another server to bring some more ranch, which they did, but then we saw on the bill that they charged us $1 for it. The food was decent, but we were very frustrated and starving by the time the food came. We had a similar experience the last time we came, but thought it was a fluke. We are not going back.
The menu is diverse, which would normally scare me, but everything we had was good, even the kids food. A great place to bring the family and know that everyone will be able to find something they like. Also, for Maui, the prices were reasonable.
While the food was plentiful and tasted alright, the service was lacking. If you like brewed tea, don’t order tea from Lava Rock. It is a tasteless “tropical” blend that looks like dirty water. While I understand that waiters want a high tip, the waiter should not mark the percentage for the customer. We realized what he had done and gave him more of a tip than he actually deserved, but not what he wanted.
Wonderful location. Great selection for dinner. Food was awesome.
Always get good food and great service, mahalo Tyler. This is a must try if you haven’t already. Lava Rock is ‘da best
Of all the places we ate on our trip, this place was just ok. Sitting upstairs on the deck with the nice breeze was the best part. The food was ok- nothing spectacular for the price. The lobster and spinach dip was not great. Our server was good, but would’ve felt better if his long hair had been pulled back.
Great fish and chips and Mahi mahi fish of the day meal!
We waited for over an hour for our food with no explanation or compensation. The food was barely warm, and the restaurant wasn’t busy.
Service was horrible. They sat us in the back so we had no view. Had to ask multiple times for our waiter. The food was just ok. The best part was the lava rock steak. When the waiter brought the check it was on a tablet and he sat there and watched/waited for us to give him his tip pointing to the 20% option which he didn’t deserve. Wouldn’t return.
Your quintessential local bar feel! Casual tasty food and down to earth service! Unfortunately like everywhere else right now even with a reservation you will be waiting. Service staff was friendly and the poke was delicious!
