Beautiful location but the food was just ok. Ono fish was over cooked and my husband's meal was over cooked as well. After we placed our food order it literally took 3 minutes for the food to come out. They must have it all ready sitting under lights. I would suggest going for sunset cocktails and eat someplace else.

We had eaten at Lava Lava a few times before when we were on vacation, but this time was a completely different experience. I made the reservation on Open Table weeks in advance so that we would be guaranteed a seat close to the water, which has always worked in the past. This year when we were seated we were put in a section off to the side that had plastic chairs that were sticky and sandy (we were dressed up for the pricey restaurant) and the tiny tables were rocking back and forth. My husband commented that it looked like we were in the kiddie section. We told them about our reservation and asked if we could have a better table. Even though there was our usual ocean front table and a couple of others available, we were seated in the very back by the kitchen door. The service was slow, my chicken was so tough I couldn't even eat it. The rice looked like it had been sitting for a long time because it was really hard. This restaurant has gone from one I would recommend to one I never intend to go back to.

Exceptional experience. Attentive wait staff. Speedy delivery of multiple selections. Well crafted and presented menu items. Without a doubt the best Hawaaian dining experience in the last 25 years.

Alrhough we had reservations the hostess decided to seat a very large party that were walk-ins. We were the last dinner reservation of the evening. In addition I ordered the special and the waitress submitted the order. She then came back and informed me they had just sold the last special. Correlation to large party being seated ahead of us? Don't know for sure but a poor perception. This is one of my favorite places but did not meet expectations this visit.

I had a great day and enjoyed the view. The seared ahi was a little mushy on the stand up nachos and not sure how I feel about the wait staff. I spent a lot of time to decide what way to go with ordering and felt obligated to order per the recommendation. Maybe next time I will ask for recommendation before spending that much time with the menu.

Great place to watch sunset! Great food, great drinks, friendly staff all in a casual outdoor setting. Will go again next time on Big Island!
