What Insiders Are Saying
Juniper is a fancy-ish Italian spot in East Austin that's good for dinner with the parents or a grown-up brunch.
Nice modern feel to the interior but still casual. The service was good but not great. Excellent food and drinks but felt a bit over priced, especially the cocktails. I would probably go back again to try more of the pastas but I can think of a number of Austin restaurants I’d rather visit for a special dinner.
We loved our meal at Juniper. The service was excellent; our waitress was friendly and had good suggestions, and the people who deliver your food give a nice explanation and presentation of what you're receiving. The food was truly delicious. We went for pasta, so we both got dishes off of the pasta portion of the menu, and were very satisfied. The house mozzarella appetizer was very good as well. The dessert was alright, but a bit heavy and overly hazelnut accented. Our one complaint would be that the cocktail was very small for the price. While craft cocktails will typically run you about $10-13, they should be at least of a size greater than three sips. It tasted delicious though! We would happily visit Juniper again. Thank you for the great experience.
Nice twists on each dish and cocktails
They made my anniversary incredibly memorable. Such caring and thoughtful staff made it one of my most memorable dinners in Austin ever!!
The food was some of the tastier fare I've had in Austin. The Gnocchi Fritti was unbelievable, perfectly accented by the peanuts and parsley. The parpadelle oxtail ragu was perfect: firm, earthy and the sauce was exquisite. The grilled broccoli was good, not great, with too much salt but well scorched for flavor. And the plate of the night, the citrus-infused pork chop with cooked fat morsels...melted in my mouth. The service was warm, attentive and comfortable, especially given the special treatment for our anniversary night. Please visit this fine restaurant and experience what makes Austin...Austin.
Our group of 8 sat at a large rectangular table -- service was excellent, meal was delicious, crafted drinks were made with love -- a very nice evening for all.
Juniper consistently delivers on all fronts! For the 2nd time, we chose to celebrate our wedding anniversary at Juniper. It was evident that they appreciated our choice.
We wanted to love this place as it was chosen for my birthday dinner! Unfortunately, it left us disappointed. We ordered the puffy potato starter which was basically fried balls of mashed potatoes, the texture was a little too strange. The chicken liver mousse was bland. We decided to sample several pasta dishes instead of ordering a heavy meat course. The restaurant was so cold that by the time we ate our pasta, the edges of the noodles were cold and dry, particularly the caramelle. The cacio e pepe was bland, it would have been easy to make this dish at home. Their wine list is good, but quite overpriced. It was painful paying $20 for the one glass of red wine. Despite all these complaints, I must say the bomba dessert was WONDERFUL. I can't remember the last time I had such a lovely treat at the end of the meal. The dessert course would be a reason to return. The ambiance was quite nice despite the frigid temp.
Shannon was amazing.
I can see why Juniper was voted #6 in a recent restaurant poll, although I would rank them higher! It’s definitely one of our always “go to” restaurants because of the consistency and deliciousness of the food, service, the wine list and their craft cocktails! We love Juniper and looking forward to seeing Nic’s next concept come to life!
Great food, wine and service! Especially loved the papardelle
We dined at the counter. The service was excellent. The puffy potatoes were good. Gnocchi Fritti was just ok. The spaghetti (carbonara-style) and oxtail ragu pappardelle were both just bland.
We loved our first dinner there so much we came back the next night and brought my cousin. I love this restaurant, from the friendly staff to the bustling open kitchen to the spare but chic decor, and, most importantly, the superb food and beverages. Though the food is presented simply, the flavors are anything but simple - rich and complex, they worked beautifully in everything we sampled. Has to be one of the best dining experiences in Austin!
Went for an anniversary dinner and was treated like pure gold the moment we walked in the door. Hostess wished us a happy anniversary and supplied us with menus that had Happy Anniversary printed on them!!! Then our wonderful server Mark brought us complimentary glasses of Prosecco as he wished us a happy anny. He helped us through our menu choices thoughtfully based on our preferences and palate. Honestly, it was the type of elite service I expected, and was not disappointed. The drinks and food... spectacular. Well dressed (that is, not over dressed) baby lettuces with some baked parmesan bits providing great texture and a bright beet salad off-set with a creamy yogurt started our meal. We then went to pillowy gnocchi with apple over a brown butter that was light yet filling at the same time. Then a wonderfully hearty lamb osso bucco over a creamy risotto was the piece de resistance. The meat so tender yet charred slightly on the outside providing a nice contrast of texture and taste. Simply a wonderful meal in a beautiful space with exceptional service and friendliness from a staff that wants to make your experience special. Thanks so much for a wonderful evening!
Great pasta, the menu changes every time we go so it is always exciting to try new things
The food is good, but the servers are trying a bit too hard to educate the diners on how a menu works. It's a bit too pretentious for my taste. The food is pretty good but not great.
Celebrated our wedding anniversary here. First time at Juniper. Sat at the "counter" and watched the scene unfold before us. Staff was incredibly helpful and friendly. Food was creative and very good. Staff took care of us and even gave us a glass of sparkling wine to celebrate, along with a staff-signed menu and some nibbles and spices to take home. Couldn't ask for more.
Although it looks a great deal like the other new restaurants built along that part of Cesar Chavez (über-modern concrete-and-glass box, hipster line-drawing furniture, sparse patio and posh bar area), Juniper is by far my favorite. The food was fantastic, made with surprising combinations of ingredients. The service was a perfect mix of laid-back and attentive—thank you, no "introductory spiel" about special's and the server's favorite way to eat. We were also thrilled to note that the space is well insulated (and no concrete floor), so we could straight-up hear each other talk! Drinks on the patio afterward were another unexpected pleasure, as it's quiet and private back there. Altogether a fantastic experience. Thank you!
The entire staff made us felt welcomed and everything about this restaurant was just excellent! Highly recommend to all!
All great - counter seating was lovely. Great food great people excellent wine.
Our fifth time... sat at counter and enjoyed watching the chef's put together some outstanding food.
Portion size was a little small but taste was amazing
We were celebrating my friends 35th birthday. The restaurant staff made it special by giving us a complimentary champagne toast and a personalize menu/birthday card that all staff signed! We sat at the bar, so we could see the chefs were preparing. (best people watching) We asked lot of questions about all the meals going out, the plates all looked yummy. Josh answered all the questions! Gnocchi was my favorite dish!! Our waiter Michael was on top it! Everyone was great, especially Michael & Josh! Thanks for making our night perfect! We def be back!
Food did not meet the expected quality. Quite frankly the food lacked taste. Utterly disappointed. It’s not an authentic Italian restaurant. Being charged for olive oil is bizarre. Highly over priced for the quality of food and service.
I have already recommended this wonderful restaurant to my friends and family. The food and service were exceptional. We were looking for a yummy quiet place to celebrate my husband’s birthday- just four of us - we Really wanted to be able to hear one another. And Boy did it deliver!
Food was excellent - service was fine but not outstanding. Price was on the expensive side given the portion size and ambiance.
Awesome restaurant and a specialties waitress. Such a fun night.
I have had great Italian food after living in NYC and San Francisco. But the pasta was perfectly prepared, and the meatballs were the best I've had. The service was good, but our guy wasn't the friendliest. The ambience is energetic and on the loud side. Definitely a place to go with friends who desire good pasta. Not sure I would go again even though the food was great because I prefer a more intimate rustic environment.
This restaurant is definitely worth checking out. It's tucked back in on East Cesar so have your night vision binoculars working if you show up after dark. They have an open kitchen seating option, which was all that was left when we booked. Our "waiter" was friendly and accommodating. The food was great, I had the "lambneck" special, tasty but only lukewarm, unfortunately. The "crispy salad" was delicious and they send you on your merry way with a bag of caramel corn. A bit overpriced but that seems to be the trend these days! Happy dining!
Service was excellent. Danielle our server was very good. We will return,
My husband and I ate here for a celebratory dinner and we couldn’t have been happier with our experience. The food was amazing and the service was professional. After dinner the staff sent us away with a birthday package full of spices, treats and a personalized menu signed by the staff wishing my husband a happy birthday. We will be coming back without question.
Josh and Danielle were the best! We had a lovely dinner, the food was amazing and we laughed all night.
Wanted to love this place as it gets good reviews, but thought it was just OK and that's not great considering the price point. Food was good, but the entree portions were tiny and to pay $32 for lamb confit and get essentially 6 bites seems ridiculous. Pasta portions were small as well and just OK. We had a group of 8 celebrating 3 birthdays and some arrived late, which isn't ideal for waitstaff. However, our waiter had a negative attitude and seemed annoyed with every request. The space is very cool from an ambiance/design perspective though quite loud. We asked for the music to be turned down, which they did accommodate, thankfully. Overall, though, this was disappointing.
First time here. Loved it. Jack our waiter was behind the bar. We ate dinner at the bar. Great view of the kitchen and what they were cooking. Jack was very talkative suggested a great bottle of wine. We love Cabernet but he suggested a Merlot and it was fantastic. The chicken looked really good but I had the NY Strip. Very delicious. My wife is a Vegie and she had multiple options and loved her pasta.
We will be returning soon!!
We had an amazing meal, ambiance and service! We’ll be back soon to keep working thru the menu! Next up, pasta!
We were celebrating our 27th Anniversary and had to choose one of our top three favorites, with Juniper being my wife’s Top choice for an excellent meal. We always sit at the Chef’s counter as we enjoy watching the food prep and activities in the kitchen and bar, and talking to the team as they work when opportunities present. Our Service was outstanding, the food was delicious, and the entire team did not hold back in making is feel celebrated and appreciated for spending our special occasion with them all. While somewhat pricey, there are far more expensive options around Austin that don’t come close to the quality, artistry, and care given to you like they do at Juniper.
More than pleasantly surprised. While Austin has great food, it's common to have less than attentive service or hipster attitude. Every bite and sip of wine was a crescendo with their tasting menu. This place spurred two good reviews on different sites. Seriously, it's that good. I recommend getting their pesto as it's homemade and their gnocchi appetizer.
Interesting menu items all well executed. Cocktails were great. Service extremely attentive. I've always enjoyed my meals here.
I been here many times and every time I am impressed with the quality of the food, presentation and service. Great place in east Austin
It was wonderful place to have a first date.
