Jordyn’s Soul Café is a premier soul food restaurant in Houston, Texas; expanding on our two thriving locations in Chicago to bring our home-cooked dishes and fresh ingredients down to Texas. Owner Angel McDonald opened up this business in honor of her late daughter, Jordyn. Angel has been working in the restaurant industry for many years and has always had a passion for cooking. The recipes she serves at Jordyn's Soul Café are close to her heart and have been passed down by her mother. Angel is dedicated to providing her customers with delicious food that is made from scratch daily, using only the freshest ingredients. We went on Sunday to celebrate my daughter’s graduation and it was a very nice place. Parking for a Sunday afternoon was not bad. Ambiance and cleanliness were 5 star! The music and DJ were SPECTACULAR! The food was decent. A little too sweet on the sweet items and a bit too salty on the salty items, but overall I would visit again.

The service was cool. The food was ok, the waffles were not waffles, they were cake like and it was fried in oil. The drinks were good but not strong at all. I didn’t even get a buzz. The cabbage tasted like the base was cooked in pepper sauce, the green beans were salty AF. The flies were unpaid actors. There were two bullet holes on the side of the business.

I was excited to try this restaurant as I like supporting diverse businesses. This was a disappointing experience. The restaurant was not crowded on Friday at 7:30 pm but it still took too long for someone greet us. Once the server came she wasn't very welcoming. She wasn't rude, just "dry" like she didn't care about our presence. She didn't ask any questions other than what we wanted to order. Usual questions would be whether it's our first time dining or if we are celebrating anything special (which we were ... a birthday, which I put in my OpenTable comments when I made the reservation). She was just uninterested in us as patrons. We ordered Lemon Drop martinis. They were simply too sweet and not enough alcohol so we didn't finish them. We ordered the cornbread that was listed as a $5 per piece appetizer. They would be better off charging for a plate rather than per piece. Despite this, the cornbread was tasty. We ordered 3 entrees. Short ribs with yams & cabbage; catfish with Mac & cheese & green beans; and the oxtails with white rice & broccolini. The short ribs were tasty, but very spicy, the yams were so sweet they were inedible. The cabbage was good. The catfish was VERY good. It was hot and had a golden brown crust. I liked the flavor, but my two companions felt it was a little salty. The Mac&cheese was good. Creamy, cheesy with a good balance of flavors. The green beans were good but felt like they were from a can. The oxtails were cold and sent back. Once warm, they were tasty, but a small portion for the price. The check was approximately $190. The CC machine showed tips % of 3,5,7. I asked if tip was included. Reply: "a percentage is in the bill" but it's split among the whole staff & the extra amounts were just for our server. She intentionally d/n mentioned the mandatory 20% tip was in the $190. I was appalled. I don't think this restaurant will be open long. There are too many great places in Houston to accept subpar service & uneven cuisine.

The service was really good, all of the staff were friendly and very attentive. (I did find it odd that several staff were sitting around in booths and at the bar eating pizza or walking around eating pizza from paper plates and napkins 🤔). Forgot about all of that when the food came out! The food was top tier. We had the pot roast empanadas and deviled eggs. Empanadas were bomb but those deviled eggs were really sweet, it was weird. Dinner we had the jerk lamb chops w Mac n cheese and candied yams…amazing!! The jerk lamb chops were just spicy enough but so tender and delicious…packed w flavor. The candied yams were CANDIED and so good. Mac n cheese was really good just a little over baked. We also had the Oxtails with rice and gravy and collard greens and cornbread. The oxtail melt in your mouth and loaded with flavor. Would definitely eat this food again (likely DoorDash)!! I hope they stay in business for a while. Maybe just a little more staff professionalism and people will come back. Also they add an automatic 18% gratuity for 2 or more people FYI. For the prices and gratuity we shouldn’t see staff hanging around eating pizza all over the restaurant IMO.

I was really disappointed with the service. Our server spent the entire time from the moment we sat down, complaining about how she was “ready to go home” and “had been there all day”. She then proceeded to forget to put items in that we had ordered, condiments, and our drinks. No compensation provided nor offered. She also failed to include the 20% gratuity is included, which would have been nice to know ahead of time. It also would have been nice to know that the $45 lamb chops only come with 2 because I wouldn’t have ordered them. Or that the Lobster Mac only comes with 4 pieces of Lobster, because that wouldn’t have been ordered either. No receipt was provided and we still can’t seem to figure out how our total even got to $240 for just 2 people. It was my 2nd time there and I was excited to bring my friend and put them onto a new spot, however due to this experience, it put a horrible taste in their mouth & left me extremely embarrassed. The only positive from this visit was the food being good and hot, when it did arrive. However due to the horrible service, I doubt we’ll be back.

It was a great experience. The drink drunk in love was very good. The jerk wings were also very good! Got like 2 extra wings compared to what I was supposed I see to get which was nice for me. Great music playing while you eat and drink and vibe with your person or people you’re there with. Definitely would go back because there’s more on the menu I need to try!

The food was amazing. The best soul food I had in Houston. I’m from Georgia and we’re known for our southern dishes and Jordyn’s didn’t miss a beat. I will be back

The only thing I didn’t quite like was that $10 parking..! 🤣 but listen. Everything was really good. The food spices and flavor just savory! The drinks were good the atmosphere was good. My waitress was good.. she kept making sure our table was ok. Needless to say. Keep doing that!!. I’ll be back 😀

Service was horrible! Parking is valet only(cost-10.00) One of the female waitresses was complaining about how things were being handled. She was loud and using profanity. I had to make the hostess aware that no one had some to the table. It's clearly many had been waiting for food and orders to be taken. They add a 20% tip, service good or bad service. I always tip and will tip up to 25% if the service is good. Honestly, the price of the food is not worth it. I will not go back!
