Johnny’s Downtown, opened in 1993, is similar to the original Johnny’s Bar on Fulton Road, featuring pasta, veal and fish. The setting, a refurbished 1860’s Warehouse District building, formerly a general store, is the drinking and dining spot of locals and business people alike. Joseph Fall, the executive chef, oversees the food operations and is responsible for our crafting our signature dishes and creating daily specials. There are several wines by the glass to choose from and the wine list has nabbed an Award of Excellence from the Wine Spectator. There is piano music in the bar featuring Mike Petrone Monday-Friday, and Cliff Habian on Saturday evenings.

We have been going to Johnny’s for many years. This will be our last time. The restaurant is understaffed and the quantity and quality of the food leaves much to be desired. The escargot was doused in lemon, the Lamb chops while delicious but very small portions as well as the sides. The plate with the Filet (ordered medium rare) arrived at the table fully cooked to the point of being burnt. The tiramisu offered complimentary was bland, we’ve had better frozen from the grocery store. Very sad Johnny’s has come to this. Guess all good things come to an end.

It was... OK? The meat was excellent, our sides were bland and nothing special. The most important part of the meal was done really well, the rest was just sort of meh. For these prices I would expect better.

Great fun. Piano Man was terrific.
There is a quiet section, but we chose to be on the bar side where there was a piano player.
Bread was very good. Caesar salad was excellent. Veal chop was too well done. Braised beef was excellent. (Asked for pasta instead of risotto, but our request was declined. We were offered scalloped potatoes.)

The host was not very welcoming, not very personable and quick to drop the drink menu down and say "enjoy". They greet customers at Wal Mart with more sincerity.
Server seemed distracted and more concerned about larger parties in the same room. Not very attentive to table with ordering, checking in during the meal and ordering desert. Younger servers were hustling between tables in the same room providing much better service than I experienced overall.
Food was Very Good, excellent preparation and presentation. My filet was perfectly prepared and everything was tasty.

First we ordered a vodka martini extra cold. Not dirty! Twice we repeated the brand we wanted and yet the waiter brought another. After about 10 minutes,a 4 oz water glass arrived filled with so much Olive juice that the vodka was unrecognizable. I was shocked when the ones famous muscles arrived and there was nothing but string in any of the shells and there was no sauce at all. The escargot were equally an edible last week. We asked for the bill, tipped the waiter and left. Out of fairness. Our notice of departure was met with an apology for the experience at no charge.

For the price, the food was not good. I have made better steaks at home to be honest.
We enjoy eating out and have no issue with prices except when it wasn’t a good value or the meal was not worth the price.

Our dinner at Johnny's was delightful.(The char grilled filet mignon was mouth watering!) The atmosphere was very pleasant; it was nice to hear live piano music. Our server seemed relatively new but was very pleasant and accommodating. We look forward to returning and certainly recommend Johnny's Downtown.

Service was terrible, food was good but my wife's short ribs had to be warmed up since they came out cold. It took nearly 20 minutes, after seated, to get water even after we asked several times. Service was slow, forgetful, not knowledgeable about the food, and generally absent. We kept seeing her leave during our meal and not surprisingly when we left we saw her and several other servers smoking out back. Jhonnys Downtown has a great reputation and we will eventually try it again, but it was disappointing to say the least. After not getting the chance to have a special/celebratory night out with my wife for 18 months, this was a let down and it will be awhile before we go back.

Had a great meal but in my Open Table reservations I said it was for a business meal and they put us in the bar area. The piano player/singer was wonderful but not helpful to our business conversation. Next time I will just ask to be put in the dining area .

Johnny’s has a Browns brunch on Sundays with a special menu so I made a reservation. When we walked in the man that greeted us was sarcastic and rude, the food was awful. Seemed as if it was pre-made and was cold. We ordered bloody Mary’s and they weren’t great. I would never recommend this place as somewhere to go before a game. High priced, bad food and crappy service. I have never reviewed anything before but felt compelled too.

This is a really nice space. I had seen some mixed reviews but decided to give it a shot. The issue here is the food is just poor and very much amateurish. There was also a long wait to be served after we ordered. This establishment is expensive, so I would expect much better. I have taken the hit so you don't have to. Go elsewhere.

We reserved a table for six at 1:00 for lunch prior to the Browns game. Once seated, we were told that we could only order from the dinner menu! We did not want "dinner"...so after a round of drinks (they served warm beer?!) we left. It was unfortunate because all the other local restaurants were booked!

We wish they would have told us when we made the reservation that lunch would not be served...

I wish I had something good to say about my experience at Johnny’s downtown.
I went to the Resturant before the 4:00pm Browns game. My reservation was at 1:15…..I have been to Johnny’s many times before a game. They usually serve a brunch/lunch menu.
What I did not expect this time was the Resturant’s choice to serve a small dinner menu.
1:00 pm is way to early for dinner.
We had no other option (too late to go elsewhere) we order three entrees items that were in the price range of $30 to $50.
Now for the really bad part!
I ordered the breaded veal chop. I asked the waitress if she would mind leaving the salad off as it makes the breading soggy.
She then informed me that there could be no substitutions. ( no surprise it was soggy and inedible!
We were a party of four and all the entrees were served cold! We were also told that they would not be serving bread.
Our cocktails came in plastic cups. Ok for brunch, but not a fine dinner.
Our waitress did the best she could considering she was just following management.
How can what is supposed to be a fine high end restaurant serve such a sub par meal for what ended up being over $300? One couple even shared.
This is game day! At least give your customers a choice to have a burger….
I will never come back to this tired looking restaurant on game day or any other day!

The appetizers were good but we were extremely disappointed with the entrees. The three orders of veal medallions were dry and tough, which is particularly unfortunate given veal is supposedly what Johnny’s is known for. Also, the plate portions of potatoes and vegetables on two of the servings were embarrassingly small. My wife’s fish was dry and disappointing as well. Too bad. We’ve had other great dining experiences at Johnny’s Downtown but after this one, not sure we’ll go back.

Not much went right with our dinner last night at Johnnys Downtown Cleveland.

The server was very slow. It took 30 mins to get a cocktail. The table next to us went directly to the bar to get their drinks.Food was just o.k. despite the high price. Portions were very small.

We were disappointed as we were celebrating a special occasion.

Waitress had a bad attitude & gave the impression she did not want to be there which created a terrible experience for us. When we asked for bread, we were told, “they don’t make that here anymore”. When we asked for recommendations on what was good, she told us about 2 entrees, but said they weren’t making either the way they normally do tonight. It was our first visit and we were visiting from Chicago. We were made to feel like nothing was going to be right this particular night. When the food arrived, it was decent, but definitely not a $200+ meal! This is not the kind of experience one should have at a highly rated restaurant, and it will cause a decrease in return customers.

First time ever being disappointed here. Appetizers good, but dirty appetizer plates needed to be replaced; Order was entered wrong, pasta woefully overcooked and haphazardly presented 9one grimly overcooked Italian sausage on a pile of over sauced pasta), paper wine list presented with sauce stain on it. Really disappointing for a restaurant I had always used as a showcase for downtown dining with out of town friends and clients

We had a very poor dining experience. We waited a long time for our food and then two of the entrees which were ordered with “special preparation requests” arrived not properly prepared. It took so long to fix the issue that by the time the entrees returned to the table properly prepared, the others at the table were done with their meals. And the restaurant did not even offer us ANY reparations for their screw up. In addition, the people who did not get their meal prepared properly asked for some bread for the table so they could at least eat something while others were eating were told that the restaurant HAD NO BREAD. COME ON. An Italian restaurant with no bread. That is inexcusable. We also asked about Wi-Fi connectivity while dining and were told the restaurant does not have Wi-Fi. What restaurant does not have Wi-Fi? Even inexpensive restaurants have Wi-Fi these days.
We will not be back. Too many other great dining experiences in Cleveland to risk subjecting ourself to this type of overpriced, under-attentive dining experience again.
