As others have noted, there has to be something special to justify spending $400+ for dinner. We have enjoyed JHS for decades, but the Family Dinner this past Sunday was not one of them. The wagyu steak was not up to par. Worse, Eric B, our server, tried his best to rush us along from the minute we arrived until he got his check - even taking plates away mid-bite! He must have had somewhere else he'd rather be - we hadn't. (By the way, the restaurant was less than half full.) Without some remedial action by management, we're not sure we'd invite friends to join us here again. Disappointing...
Our filet mignon was tasty. Twice baked potato with multiple cheeses was not good at all and expensive. The noise level in the bar made conversation difficult. The restaurant itself was not as noisy. The food overall was not special. The prices are VERY steep. Definitely not worth the money.
The reason I am only giving this only one star, I would rather no stars, is because the restaurant was closed.
I made it a point to call the restaurant a few weeks in advance to make sure they were open on 9/3, Labor Day, but I also used the online reservation system which should have blocked the date out if they were closed. It would seem logical that the staff would have know they were closed. This was a special birthday luncheon and we were not happy that the place was closed. We ended up at a place close to Bellevue Square.
Our table was ready in minutes. The menu was explained with a lot of attention to detail. The wine list was amazing! Our steaks were cooked to perfection! We had a very good dining experience and will be certainly back.
8-17-18 Excellent meal. Absolutely delicious. We had a fun and efficient later. He made it all that much more enjoyable.
Immaculate as always. Thanks!
Staff was friendly and accommodating
I‘ve to many (steak) restaurants in US, but John Howie really tops them all.
But the outstanding food and service have its price.
The Salt River steaks we had we THE best I’ve eaten and that’s saying a lot since we have had Waygu frequently. Perfect tenderness and fat percentage
It’s really hard to beat the quality of service here. Super relaxing, feel very well taken care of, and of course awesome foods.
First time dining at John Howie. I was impressed.
Fabulous food and service, the waitstaff is amazing and though the food is quite pricey it was definitely fabulous.
Excellent steak and service! Andy is a professional server and very friendly too. Thaks to Andy, Tom and all for a great celebration!
Eric was an important aspect to the overall experience, he was the best in service. Thank you for making
our 20th Anniversary dinner a great memory
This was our first time ordering exclusively off the vegetarian menu and we weren't disappointed. Almost everything we ordered was very flavorful and satisfying. The portion sizes were excellent as well. As for service, well this is John Howie Steak. The service was impeccable and is always a highlight when eating here. Thank you for a wonderful experience...
The food and service was great. But the main dining room is so bright it was hard to see my colleagues when looking into the light. And awkward to have to put on sunglasses. They should have tinting or solar shades.
Delicious business lunch at John Howie's as usual. Appetizers were fabulous, main courses all had very happy diners in our party of five. Service wasn't quite as locked in as usual, but still very good. Was surprised there is no sommelier during lunch hour.
Steak and service was pretty good. But not sure if it's worth $300 for two.
We always have an amazing experience with great customer service. We came to try their Sunday family dinner for four. Would definitely do this again! This place is on our list of best steakhouses.
Fantastic food! Excellent service. Unfortunately we were cold the entire time
Of our dining experience which was uncomfortable for all four of us. Air conditioning was blasting right on us. Even the silverware became ice cold.
Appetizer, bread and salads were great. Service was exemplary. Chicken Jidori was good but Halibut was not that fresh nor great. We would go for drinks and appetizers in the future but didn't live up to hype and reviews
The service was great. Food was great. Very well done presentation. We had a awesome fillet and Waygu. Very happy with the evening.
Steak was very good, but the salad and tuna appetizer were uninspired, used to be an all around great place, but I think it has run out of energy.
My son has anaphylactic allergies. We stated this very clearly when we made our reservations, and were told that that John Howie's could accommodate this. We have been to the restaurant in the past, and they have taken care of my son with care and accuracy, ensuring and delicious, safe experience for him. The last two visits, have been a fiasco from beginning to end. A visit a little more than a year ago, ended with the restaurant telling us that the meal was "on the house" because of so many errors when it came to my son. On Friday, August 3, 2018, we ventured to John Howie's again, thinking that it was just an off day the last time. It was our anniversary, and my son was with us to celebrate. They okayed a dish that they in fact couldn't serve upon further investigation. Suggested another dish that came to the table with ingredients that my son couldn't have, and had to re-do the dish. Now my son was eating his meal while we were waiting to have dessert. They charged us incorrectly on our bill for his dish, listing it twice. Once they made the correction, we submitted our debit card for payment with the correct bill, and they misplaced our debit card. They went fumbling around for it until they finally located it. If we were at a casual dining restaurant, then I would make a decision to not attend again. To say the least, you pay a premium amount of money for both an exceptional menu, and service at John Howie's. I was shocked that the manager didn't't intervene, and really disappointed in the whole evening. It honestly makes me wonder if there has been a change in management, or overall philosophy regarding one's experience there.
Over dressed salad. Uninspired sandwich. Large portion of mediocre coconut cake.
Service was excellent. Servers were very cordial and exceeded my expectations. Have to thank the manager as well.
We found some sort of wrapper (maybe gum ?) in our food. The staff pretty much dismissed this and took the item off the bill. No other follow up, no regret etc. I complained to a manager who was nice and listened . Still no other action, not even a complimentary desert. This for a meal costing about $500 !
Continues to be our favorite place for an amazing steak. Lunch menu is fantastic. JH never disappoints!
We went here on our last date night prior to our wedding. This was our first time here and we greatly enjoyed our experience. Our server Thomas was fantastic and overall the service is very attentive and immaculate. We both really enjoyed our steak and lobster options and we were fond of the tempura bacon and oyster appetizers.
We were both very please with our date night experience. The restaurant really stepped up to make our special pre wedding date even more special. (;
John Howie is my new favorite steakhouse. The food was excellent (salad, dinner and dessert) and the service really wonderful. Excellent wine list. It was better than I even expected. Will look forward to going again!
Good food, but not exceptional for the price. Also you look at a view of the highway so makes the high price seem less worth it.
This was our first time to dine there as a special treat for our 33 anniversary. All the staff were very professional, highly courteous and just “took care of us”. Needless to say, the food was outstanding; crusted halibut and the “speciality burger”. The atmosphere, food and service makes us want to come back.
Absolutely wonderful with fantastic service. The food was delicious!!!
Very pricey but great food. We got a table side for two which comes with 32oz Rib eye steak, bone marrow, grilled potato and onions. Steak was perfectly grilled and delicious, worth the money! We were pleased to dine in a high end steak restaurant.
John Howie Steak remains a premier establishment in all regards. It's one of our "go-to" places for special occasions. It's superb. However, I have to say, at $64 for an 8oz Filet Mignon, albeit a great one, it's a rare occasion. Regardless, fun to do once in a long while, and I hope everyone has the chance, at least once, to try it.
Wonderful, incredible beef (chateaubriand). Comfortable, but surprisingly bland ambiance. Service was pleasant but shaky at times - pretty long delays between visits by wait staff. But we won't forget that wonderful steak.
Outstanding food and service! All the staff went out of their way to make our 25th wedding anniversary very special :-)
From the moment you walk in the door, you are pampered and taken care of. The staff are very attentive without hovering. Their knowledge of the menu is exceptional and their recommendations are spot on. The food is divine. It is perfectly prepared and presented. I knew it would be expensive going in but after the experience, I have to say it's worth every penny.
Best night out in a LONG time. Service was amazing, drinks were always full and food was top notch. Thank You Thomas and crew for an amazing evening.
Amazing food and service. It’s a gem for steak on the east side.
