Contrary to popular belief, JJ's Restaurant is not named for popular owner Jimmy Frantzé. In 1985, Jimmy purchased JJ Malane's from his former business partner and the saloon's namesake. Malane's went away, but JJ's remained, and a West Plaza fine dining icon was born.
Jimmy invested his enthusiasm and passion for exceptional contemporary American food, steaks and wine to build one of the finest restaurants in Kansas City just a block west of the Country Club Plaza. He helped create an environment that attracted and kept one of the most professional staffs in the region. He inspires so much loyalty that when the new JJ's reopened 18 months after a 2013 fateful fire, almost all of his staff re-joined him.

    JJ’s doesn’t disappoint! We went for our anniversary and had a nice time. The only complaint was the tables were a little tight in the dining room we were in and we could easily hear the tables next to us. We had the Brie, Medallions, Strip and Cheesecake- all amazing! We even had a complimentary Anniversary toast.

    Not an intimate experience at all, very loud and cramped. Tables are strategically placed so they can squeeze in as many as possible. Hard to have a conversation with the noise level. We enjoyed the food and wine but won’t be back.

    The food was absolutely delicious! Appetizers of the lobster purses and onion soup followed by the smoked pork chop and filet medallions. Everything was tremendous!

    My wife and I had our very first date at J.J.'s...34 years ago. I proposed to her at J.J.'s 31 years ago. We celebrate these two events -- and our relationship -- every year at J.J.'s (the old and new location). It's OUR restaurant; very special. The food and the service exceed our expectations every time!

    The noise level was high because the Chiefs were on in the bar where we chose to sit! They were scoring and won! What do we expect? Did not expect a Happy Hour on Sunday but what a value. The mussels in curry were phenomenal.

    Food was very good but comparatively expensive. Extra charge for a credit card. Plaza taxes are high. They quote a whiskey price, but if on the rocks its extra. Neat? Extra charge. How do you actually order a whiskey and get it for the price quoted? Nickels and dimes, but aggravating. Leaves a bad taste after what could have been an enjoyable dinner. Just more reasons to eat north of the river.

    Both ribeye and 11 oz filet were under seasoned. Risotto was “scooped” onto plate. Sales tax was 12.9% plus an additional 3.5% for credit card. Won’t be going back anytime soon.

    Got a last-minute reservation on Saturday night after a little fun on the Plaza. We were seated outside immediately, and water was brought out. We ordered the Paco's Shrimp to start, and it never fails to amaze! We ordered wine, but had to wait a bit. Our small plates came out before our wine, but that was rectified quickly. The amount of food was perfect since we did not want to eat too much. The ambiance on the patio was great - it was a beautiful evening! Overall, a great experience, though that probably had to do with the company I had too.

    Delicious food. Loved the grilled salmon with spinach and rissoto - was so tasty! I love the house salad with its wonderful dressing. I have never been disappointed at JJ's ever!

    This was our first experience at JJ's. The steak was probably one of the best I've had in a really long time. It was a big group in the area where we were sitting and so it was pretty noisy. Would've been nice to have a little quiet area somewhere, but all in all we will definitely go back.

    This was our first visit the other night to JJ's and we are so happy we decided to go there! They made my parent's Anniversary dinner absolutely perfect, from the greeting, sign on the table and special toast. The food was delicious from the drinks, appetizers, entrees and desserts. We had the BEST mussel appetizer we have ever had that included a curry sauce that was absolutely the best thing ever. We asked for bread to dip in the sauce it was THAT good! We also enjoyed the Paco Shrimp and the Meatballs. For our dinners we all got something different ranging from the pork chop, crab cakes, grouper and salmon. All were cooked and seasoned to perfection. The risotto that most of us had as a side is highly recommended!! The desserts we had the Limoncello and the Triple Chocolate cake. Both were such a nice ending to our meal. Overall, I highly recommend this restaurant for their food and service as a wonderful place for special dinners! Thank you JJ's for a beautiful evening!

    Ordered the Paco shrimp which always was one of our favorites, but the shrimp were extremely small. We notice this the last time, as well but now they were even smaller. Will not order these again. 4 Tiny shrimp for 22 dollars. The waiter agreed but no refund or change in price was offered. The extra fee for the credit cards is another reason we may not return for quite some time. This is not an inexpensive restaurant. The credit card fee was significant for our bill.

    The cheese board and the purses are always delicious. The recommended wine was the best I've had; thanks David! My fish and my husband's steak were amazing, but the fettuccine had little flavor. They were kind enough not to charge us for it. Overall, a wonderful evening at JJs!

    Food was superb, service was outstanding, courses served in appropriate time. Dining room was most comfortable and relaxed. Cost was appropriate for style of meal. They made sure the parking pass was validated. We highly recommend JJ's.
