Large gulf shrimp stuffed with horseradish, wrapped in bacon and deep-fried. Served with a Dijon mustard and white wine sauce, garnished with roasted red bell pepper puree
Grilled cold-water lobster tail served with drawn butter and asparagus
This house specialty starts with a boneless breast of chicken sautéed with sliced mushrooms, tomatoes, red bell peppers, garlic, in a dry Marsala wine sauce. Served over butter & cream infused mashed potatoes
I’ve gone to JJ’s for many , many years. It’s never disappointed once. Bret, our server was amazing and extremely knowledgeable. I highly recommend JJ’s.
Classic with great wine selection. Food on point as always
Our dinner at JJ’s was amazing from start to finish! The drinks were very good (Old Fashioned and the JOCO) and the Lobster Shrimp Purses app was incredible. Caesar was excellent and the Filet & Lobster was perfection! Can’t wait to go back!!
Dinner was wonderful, as usual. The Tirimisu for dessert was sub par. It appeared to be previously frozen but quickly warmed in spots leaving a cold yet mildly warm in spots dessert.
We always have a great time at JJ's ! Taylor was OUTSTANDING . . . friendly, informative, courteous & FUN to talk with! Thanks . . . we'll be back!
The patio provides a wonderful ambience and the food is consistently excellent.
We have enjoyed a fair number of anniversaries at JJ’s over the years, as well as “regular” dining. This time we were celebrating our anniversary. The hostess greeted us by wishing us Happy Anniversary and offering us her best bet for a quieter but not boring table in the corner by the window. Nice! Our server, however, was unremarkable. The restaurant was not busy for a Saturday night, but he appeared rushed and didn’t check in often. He had an odd manner (I don’t know any other way to put that.).
The Rigatoni Bolognese was very good. The JJ’s Pride beef tenderloin was cooked nearly perfectly but lacked flavor and was pretty disappointing, all things considered. Its accompanying Israeli couscous with roasted vegetables was bland and contained two pieces of vegetable. We shared the beet salad and asked for pistachios or pepitas (which are on other salads on the menu) instead of the walnuts. The server said walnuts were all they had. When pressed re: the fact that other salads had other nuts, he just said they couldn’t source those right now (weird), but eventually offered almonds. The salad was very lightly dressed and ultimately lacked flavor.
The award winning wine list has Stags’ Leap wine listed, but the wine served is actually its competitor, Stag’s Leap (note apostrophe placement). Sounds like a nitpicky detail, but the two wineries are actually quite different, though both good. A lesser restaurant might be expected to make this error, but we expect more from JJ’s. Chocolate cake for dessert was OK. Kansas City has such a wealth of excellent restaurants these days that it will be hard for JJ’s to keep up with experiences like this.
Best place to have a great dinner in KC
We were seated quickly and we were assisted by our server right away.
Food was average
From appetizer to dessert, salads and steaks in between everything was excellent as always including Drew, our server!
We enjoyed a beautiful dinner and lovely bottle of wine! Our server was wonderful!
Outstanding wine menu, great appetizers, and fantastic dinner! We love the service and the food! Great Kansas City restaurant!
Fantastic food and service. Gorgeous atmosphere.
We had friends visiting from New Zealand and wanted a place we could have a fabulous meal and not be hurried along. JJ’s did not disappoint. We had the most outstanding evening, service was fantastic, food was mouth watering and the wine spectacular. I highly recommend JJ’s.
Have been a patron of JJ's for years (pre and post fire) and have sent many friends there. That ship sailed. Had a issue with wine that was dealt with poorly by the staff, (turned out the staff member was the manager), the food entres ( rack of lamb and filet) were not good, potatoes were very close to raw. We asked to see the manager, see above, he never came to the table. Hiding??? Only positive, Katie was a lovely person to work with and very apologetic.
Had a nice quiet dinner with my spouse. I've been dining here for many, many years. The menu could use a refresh. One of the best wine lists in Kansas City.
What a great place to celebrate our anniversary! The patio is beautiful and quiet, the food and drinks yummy, and the service impeccable. In an era of understaffed restaurants, JJ's service is some of the best in the city. We will be back!
Great restaurant with excellent food.
Outstanding value for upscale restaurant.
Excellent service by our waiter, comfortable ambiance (we ate at a high top in the bar). Noise level was energetic but not overwhelming. The filet I ordered was prepared perfectly (Pittsburgh). The halibut special was fresh and also well prepared. A very good local choice for a steak and seafood restaurant.
My server was EXCELLENT!!! What more can I say!!!!
Everything was outstanding and different than what’s usually available in restaurants.
I'd looked forward to dining at JJ.s again but was very disappointed. I ordered a glass of sparkling wine and was told it was not available due to COVID. Alright, that was not awful, so I skipped a drink. Then I ordered the paco shrimp - always a favorite. The shrimp is no longer large, but very small and was overcooked and tough. My dining partner ordered the little "purses" for a starter and while still delicious, they had also had been reduced in size to tiny. Prices for both items were still very high. While thinking out loud about the rack of lamb, the server said NO lamb. When asked why, we were again told that it was because of COVID. Before ordering the steak medallions, I asked the server whether they could be cooked rare. She didn't know but went to the kitchen to ask. She came back and said that they indeed could be prepared rare. When they arrived, they were medium to well done and sitting in thick clumps of gravy that would have done a country diner proud. The medallions were very small and ultra thin. I've never seen any like them - ever. The server went back to the kitchen and came back to the table asking if I would like a beef filet cooked rare to replace the medallions. I said yes; when that steak arrived, it was indeed rare if black on the top. But after the top was removed, it was very good. The scalloped cheese potatoes were absolutely delicious. We ordered dessert. Both desserts were very good, but the portion was about a third or even a quarter of what most restaurants serve and what JJ's used to serve. While this portion was enough, the price for it had also remained very high. The coffee was very good. After all was said and done, I felt very sad that JJ's is not the restaurant it once was. You can still spend a small fortune there, but you need to be prepared that you probably will not get the quality or quantity you expect. Our service was good.
Loved the service, decor, food and extensive wine list
Great service and food
My girlfriend and I had an amazing time at JJ’s. The wine that was recommended for our price range was perfect as well! The steak I had was very delicious and the pasta dish my girlfriend had, was said to be perfect!
We hit as many "fine dining" places as we can. Honestly I would call them expensive places and not fine dining. I don't know if I've found fine dining in KC. We haven't hit them all yet, but I will forever miss E.B.T. JJ's looked promising on the website. From the absent valet to the very casual host the "fine dining" thought left our head to just expensive. Everyone was very nice and our server was incredible. She was over sat by far, a 8 top a 7 top two 4 tops and two 2 tops. She juggled us in a way that no one but a professional could. It still left us looking around and waiting for drinks and other things between courses. But the job that she did do.... OMG I can't stress it enough, she did phenomenally.
The food: We ate a LOT: She set this up to come in courses and it was fantastic
started with 2 appetizers: their Ahi Tuna and their Lobster Goat chees purses - both perfect the Tuna was spot on seared and the sauce had just a hint of spice and the purses were what grown up rangoons should be.
Their Pear and Stilton salad was perfection with me wanting to just order a whole plate of the stilton
Their onion soup was great - ok not gonna lie - it was like a very nice french onion - but really good.
Rainbow Trout small plate - fresh tasting and delicious
Their small plate of the day - a pasta duck confit - great flavors - heavy - and I know how many times people tell me that "that is how you are supposed to cook pasta" i don't like it that "al dente"
Wife had the lobster tail dinner - and this is where her and I disagree - it was cooked to perfection!! she doesn't like the chargrilled flavor and it ruined it for her. I thought that it made the dish.
I had the tenderloin medallions in a peppercorn mushroom sauce and it was divine.
The bad:!!:: It was our anniversary and they sat us in the middle of their dining room. Ok, not my favorite but we'll deal. Then they sat a 12 top and a 7 top on either side of us. And the 12 top were all loud and yelling at each other.
Our meal was delicious. Service was great. Terrific wine selection. Great way to celebrate my birthday!
Ambiance great. Service a big slow. Food mediocre. We had the special sea bass which was dry. The filet looked like a flank steak and was over cooked. I expect to leave thinking the food was awesome when you are paying over $40/plate.
Wonderful service and excellent food. The outdoor patio is awesome!
They always do it right at JJ's. One of KC finest!! Finest wine selection. And wonderful creative food in a beautiful location.
Fun place. Good food. Good service. Our favorite plaza casual eatery
Everything was done to perfection. The food was amazing and the cocktails and wine were the best. We can't wait to return. Thanks.
Rick always gives great service. Desert were especially good last night.
Always great food, and drinks!!!
Great atmosphere, service, and food. I love when a restaurant does something different from every other restaurant. We had lobster purses, onion soup, filet medallions, and the evening special halibut over risotto. Everything included the wine was perfection. We’ll done JJs.
It was amazing as it always is! One of my favorite places 😊
Amazing, as always.
Wine and food was as good as one could expect. That's why I keep going back.
