About this restaurant

  • Good for business meals
  • Fancy
  • Good for groups
We are an eclectic Los Angeles restaurant, located in Koreatown, heralded for its creativity and genre-defying cuisine. Their first restaurant together, owners Lien Ta and Chef Jonathan Whitener opened Here's Looking At You in 2016. Named a "Restaurant of the Year" by Food & Wine Magazine and one of Eater National's "38 Most Essential Restaurants," HLAY was also the subject of author Patric Kuh's "Becoming a Restaurateur." After four magical years as a small independent restaurant, COVID-19 would force its forever closure. But 17 months later, fate would have it that the community would come together to help resurrect this very special restaurant. Thanks to you, Here's Looking At You is back.

In 2022, it was included in NY Times list "50 Best Restaurants in America." In 2024, it was ranked #15 in LA Times list "101 Best Restaurants in LA."

Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Daniel Cutler

From the OpenTable editors: In the years since its 2016 debut, owner Lien Ta’s restaurant has established itself as a neighborhood go-to, critical hit, and beloved third space for Angelenos. That's because HLAY—as locals call it—turns out inventive California-inspired and Asian-inflected small plates like uni panna cotta and spicy Caesar salad with sesame breadcrumbs alongside an excellent cocktail list and buzzy dining room that combine to feel like a dinner party every night.

The food was spectacular as always, and the cocktails were on point. I am so crushed that this place is closing — the LA dining scene will have a gaping hole in its fabric that will not be able to be mended. HLAY is such a special place like no other consistently serving up vibes, excellent food with a distinct POV, and hospitality that is unmatched. HLAYFOREVER!

Delicious food — the uni panna cotta, sprouted broccoli salad, and branzino were all EXCELLENT. But don’t sleep on the bar program — HLAY consistently has some of the best and most UNIQUE drinks I’ve ever tasted.

Title: Disappointing Experience – Way Too Salty Across the Board I visited Here’s Looking At You last night for a special birthday dinner with high expectations, especially knowing its reputation in the LA dining scene. Unfortunately, the entire experience left us disappointed. The food overall was overwhelmingly salty – to the point where we had to ask for extra bread just to balance out the flavors and finish each dish. The sauces were so heavy-handed that our tongues were practically going numb. The biggest letdown was the 30-day dry-aged steak we ordered for $140. While the quality of the meat was excellent, the preparation was the worst I’ve experienced at a restaurant of this caliber. One of my friends took a single bite and couldn’t take another. I personally have dined at countless high-end restaurants in LA, and this was far below what I expected from a place with such buzz. I politely brought this up to our server, who offered to bring a to-go box instead of sincerely addressing the issue. She said she would inform the manager, but no one ever followed up with us. That made the situation feel brushed off and unacknowledged, which added to our disappointment. As for dessert, we ordered the salted caramel mousse and again were hit with overpowering saltiness. It felt like more of a culinary experiment than a balanced dessert. We couldn’t even get through the first bite. This is my honest feedback in the hope that the team takes it constructively. I’m genuinely curious about the culinary standards they hold themselves to because the execution and flavor balance were far from what we expected.
