Always amazing, the tasting menu had 10 courses, not overwhelming amount of food and each course was a gem, excellent ingredients, well matched flavors, just excellent.
And Frances is not the least bit pretentious, and well priced too.
The only criticism is that it is too difficult to get reservations, otherwise we would go much more frequently.
If you have an opportunity to get in, take it, it's wonderful. Also, their sister restaurant Octavia is very good, and a bit easier to get into.
Excellent tasting menu, very good value. Attentive service.
Lovely neighborhood joint with excellent food, extensive wine list, and friendly service. We tried the tasting menu, which was fabulous. Next time I will focus on the favorites (beignets for sure). Only complaint is that the tables are too close together. No such thing as a private conversation here.
Awesome date spot, great experience, food was amazing
I have dined at Frances several times over the past years, and totally enjoyed it. I thought I was lucky to secure a reservation, which is often difficult to get, for Valentine's Day. We were one of the first tables seated. I knew it was a fixed menu at $100 per person, without wine pairings, no problem. Our salads arrive within two minutes of placing our order. Obviously they had been prepared ahead of time, which I felt was true for the entire dinner. The salads were dry and soggy, dressing settled on the bottom of the bowl, again which was true for our entrees. The vegetables were limp from over-cooking and served at room temperature. I will do back of course but I would not recommend, even Frances, for Valentine's Day.
Love this place! Everything we have is delicious and to die for. We especially loved the salad, chickpea app, fish entree and creme brûlée. Go any chance you can!
We tried the tasting menu which was an amazing deal at $65 per person. Everything was great. Our favorites included the beignets, chickpea fritters wow!! Kale Salad please send me the recipe??? It was the best I’ve ever had. The pesto pasta also was amazing. Thank you for everything. We will be back. One suggestion on yelp and open table. Take photos of the counter seating and the bar. We loved it but went in not knowing how great it was during the reservation process.
Great food and great service.
Have been so many times and is consistently good.
I've been there a couple of times but this will be my last. The reason being the noise level, which was horrendous. If I can't have a conversation with my guest without raising my voice above the music and loud conversations of other patrons, that's a deal breaker for me.
Frances continues to be the sort of treat we reserve for special occasions. This was our early Valentine's Day celebration. And, as always, Frances lived up to our expectations and was fabulous! In every way. Every dish was spectacular--creative and beautifully realized.
Jerry, the waiter was great! He offered us the tasting menu which I didn’t even know they had one. My guest and I both ordered the tasting menu and also a bottle of red wine. All the dishes were amazing even down to the last bite of the dessert.
No Complaints. Food and the whole team were great!
We had the tasting menu. It was hit and miss. The oyster was fine, the beignets delicious, the chickpea fritters boring although the aioli very good. The pasta boring, the salad meh. The streak was the highlight. The fish just okay. The highlight of the dessert was the ginger ice cream. The rest, forgettable. Good wine. Lovely servers.
Perfection as always. We love this place! Thank you again for a wonderful evening
Friendly neighborhood vibe made especially wonderful by the fabulous food. The tasting menu is a great way to sample a wide range of dishes. This is especially great if you are from out of town. Worth the trip.
The tasting menu is fantastic. Appreciated the portions so it wasn't literally just "tasting," which can be unsatisfying. Loved the whole dinner.
Very good restaurant. A bit pricey but appropriate for San Francisco. It can be loud. Overall, it was great fun.
We had a very enjoyable evening; There was one plate we weren’t crazy about (in the tasting menu); the staff noticed and asked for our sincere feedback. Without asking they gave us a different item to make up for that dish. The entire staff was wonderful!
The waiter really made our experience. Such a fun guy. Picked our wine for us. Joked with us. Also great to have the pre-set menu as an option. While the seating quarters are very close, we actually got to know one of our neighbor tables, and ended up having a really fun conversation. Felt like a true dining experience.
The service is what makes Frances stand out. Our server was outstanding, and he and his colleagues clearly enjoy working there.
The tasting menu was one of the best meals I have ever eaten. We loved it. However, the service left a lot to be desired. We spent over $200 for 2 people and felt like they were pushing us out of our table. We had just cracked into dessert and 2 servers back to back tried to clear our plates. We still had wine to finish, and they tried to take our glasses. A friend came in and we tried to say hi, and they heckled her out of the way and didn’t let her join our table just to say hi. Overall, great food, I will definitely return. However, I strongly encourage an revamp of the waitstaff culture - you can’t truly call this a fine dining or high quality experience with sub par service.
The food is top notch, but it’s the service that sets it apart - they are the rare restaurants that actually goes out of their way to make sure you have a good experience. Multiple times now, I’ve been pleasantly surprised - props to you, Frances staff!
This is the best food in town. At the end of the meal, it was all I could do not to cry and hug the chef.
We had an exceptional night at Frances. Six of us for a Birthday celebration. We started with champagne, and then ordered main courses to share between each couple. The pork chop was huge and succulent. The steak was perfect. The fish was very good. We ordered other dishes for the table- little green salad, which was the only disappointing item (underdressed and overly salty), great grilled Brussel sprouts with a balsamic dressing, dressed noodles ( very small plate), perfectly grilled white beans, terrific bread and a wonderful California Pinot Noir wine. We finished with a very chocolaty and not too sweet cake, and a birthday song.
Our waiter was fun, knowledgeable, funny, and knew exactly when to be there and when to leave us alone.
All in all, a great evening. We all highly recommend Frances (when you can snag a reservation!).
Frances continues to be a favorite Bay Area restaurant. From the Beignets to the Lumberjack Cake, all dishes were superb. The only thing that tops the food is the service.
The hostess was quite snooty and the food was good but not great. Expensive.
If they don't mind being 6 inches between each table... a bit close for my taste. Especially, if you have a very loud talking neighbor. It is a shame, because the service and food is amazing!
Great creative menu and excellent service but don't go if you plan to have a quite conversation. The noise level is excessive when the places is full...all the time.
If I knew what a sardine in a tin can with a screaming 5 year old hitting the side of that can felt like, this place would be it. The food was pleasant, but I’ll stick with the excellence of Octavia, thanks.
By far, the VERY best restaurant in San Francisco!
Frances maintains its tradition of creative excellence. The bacon beignets are wonderful. The pork chop was tasty and tender with a hint of smoky flavor. And always request bread which is only served on request. It is crusty outside and soft inside.
We love Frances -always have and always will! Delicious food, great service, and a casual vibe. Thank you for a wonderful evening!
Excellent service and food...a very reasonably priced tasting menu with very adequate servings. House wine, which was great, available by the ounce...a nice touch.
Wonderful service and food... just a bit too noisy. Overall, I’d return as it was great value and delish!
I hesitate to write an unfavorable review of a restaurant that I have consistently loved, but the food we had was not very good. Perhaps we made poor choices. For $200, it was poor value. We drank the house wine and didn't order a main or desert - two starters, three appetizers and one salad.
I will look forward to coming back, and it is as good as it has been on other occasions will write a more glowing review.
Food as always was outstanding. Engaged server who made it fun. On the noisier side, however you can still have a good conversation.
Fortunately, I have a few opportunities to dine at Frances a few times. It is a small restaurant so fetching a table is not that easy. I keep on going back because of the friendly staff and delicious food, particularly Gerald. He is the star of the restaurant. He is friendly and know the food. Frances does not have liquor license so only wine and beer are available.
This past Sunday, we started with grilled octopus with sunchoke puree. The puree is excellent. The octopus was perfectly charred but slightly overcooked. It is on the tough side. It is particularly disappointed from this octopus after tasting the best grilled octopus at Praire a week ago.
Fortunately, the exceptional sunchoke soup save the night. The crunchy pickled onions or shallots in the soup brought the brightness to the soup. The oysters were fresh and delicious.
For our entrees, we had the bavette steak and snapper. The snapper was excellent. The steak was just ok because the cut of the meat does not have much favor. Sometimes, the restaurant should bite the bullet and put a higher price tag for the pristine meat rather than putting a piece of meat which ewwh!
We were full but managed to order a dessert to share. The brioche pudding was the least favorite of the night. The pudding was too dense and did not carry much favors. Anyhow, we had a nice evening.
We had an incredible meal and at $65 for a ~10 course tasting menu...what a steal!
We went to Frances for my birthday. Our waiter, Jerry, was extremely attentive and helpful. He gave a detailed overview of the tasting menu and was very friendly. The staff also made sure our waters were never empty, we always had wine, and cleared our plates in between major courses.
This will sound surprising, but it's a testament to how good it was: the kale and fennel salad was the single best dish we had that night. Everything was great, but wow that salad. The other highlights were the snapper and the lumberjack cake. My partner and I disagreed on the beignets--she loved them and I thought they lacked flavor. The steak was good, but not great.
That said, they change the menu very often. We've been here before and will definitely be returning in the future.
Wife’s birthday. Pleasurable experience. Would recommend to others.
