Great service, food, vibe, everything! Definitely going back!
Everything was outstanding! The service, the food, the drink, and the atmosphere all contributed to a lovely evening. The food was the star of the show, obviously. Cannot go wrong with the tasting menu, which is excellent value for money. The bacon beignets were amazing, but so was the eggplant-clam balls, the chickpea croquettes, the steak, the salmon, the desserts... I can’t wait to be back!
Third time at Frances and they always deliver excellent meals and terrific service!
If you don't know now you know
they sit you on top of another table. table are too damn close and the staff acts snotty as if they’re not in the castro.
Wait staff was haughty for no apparent reason as food was average
Wines were good and ambiance charming
a birthday dinner for my husband - just the two of us - server recommended the tasting menu which was excellent - our only suggestion would be to serve the two “entree” dishes separately rather than together - the restaurant was not crowded (Sunday evening 7:30) so we were actually able to converse across our table (banquette side) - still a very good dining experience after all these years
It was incredible! Every single bite at Frances was completely divine. The staff was so friendly and welcoming, too! We can’t wait to come back.
Great experience overall. Second time. Doesn’t disappoint.
The food is amazing, and the tasting menu is a steal. The service, however, is very rushed. Different food items will be brought out at the same time, somewhat reducing the enjoyment of each individual dish. Also the tasting menu wasn't explained well to us. It's more of a sampling of a few dishes in each of the four sections of their menu: snacks, appetizers, entrees, and desserts.
Sarah and Joe welcoming as always and the new staff are equally impressive. Tasting menu unbelievable for flavor and generosity-some of the best flavors I've ever had. Puts to shame the mega dollar menus at high end places-this is the real deal. Room full of very happy diners. Simply superb!
Perfect meal. The hype is real. We did the tasting menu which was $65 and featured good portions of all their most popular items. I thought it was a great deal and gave us the opportunity to really enjoy several different plates. I'd do it again in a heartbeat and can't wait to bring family/friends here when they visit SF.
Food and service are always amazing. But, couldn’t you remove just ONE dining table so that our “neighbors” don’t rudely accuse you of banging into them on the way in and out? Our conversation is part of the soup, salad and entree of the people seated on both sides of us.
What a lovely meal we had at Frances! The place is tiny and you are basically sitting with your neighbors on either side, but that actually added to the charm of the place! Do not miss the chicpea fritters...I could have made a meal out of them! The corn soup was superb as was the risotto with seasonal veggies! Finally the shishito peppers-I have had them a million times and they are always good-these were divine...grilled perfectly and the sauce was spot on! We will be back soon!
Food and service were excellent! But the tables are rather close together which means the noise level can be a bit high. Especially if you’re seated next to guests that don’t know how to control the volume of their voice. We had the tasting menu, which is more than enough food and very well complemented flavors. Beware the bacon beignets! One order will just make you want another.
Frances has been on our “go-to” list for some time. We finally made it happen and we’re not disappointed! Service was excellent, if not a bit rushed (courses came out very close together). It would have bothered me more if I wasn’t super hungry and super tired after running the SF Marathon that morning. The menu takes advantage of what the season has to offer - in this case it was the stone fruit featured in every course. For the entree I chose the pork chop, well-seasoned and cooked to perfection - quite possibly the best I’ve ever had. We loved the neighborhood vibe, and it was clear there were many locals dining. All in all we thoroughly enjoyed our meal and hope to return on a future trip.
I don’t like being seated by the restrooms but, maybe it’s what I needed: to be tucked away safely.
The added pillow to the bench seat was reassuring. Frances is a lovely place.
The service never fails ♥️
Amazing. One of the favorite restaurants in the whole city (and Im a big foodie). Not pretentious but incredible food and really personable service.
I am lucky to live just a few blocks from this marvelous restaurant. The food is always seasonal creative and exquisitely prepared. I always start with the bacon beignets. I followed with a melon salad and brined pork chop served with corn, blistered beans and grilled peaches. Fabulous.
Great service and wonderful food! Gerald was the best server and made our anniversary dinner so much fun! Loved everything about it!!
Our party of five decided the simplest thing to do was to try the tasting menu rather than figure out what each of us was going to order. We were very pleased with our decision, enjoying a spectacular variety of teasers (Bacon beignets-brilliant! and chickpea fritters with a terrific harissa sauce), salads, appetizers including a spaghettini with uni butter that exploded with flavor, two main courses - king salmon and a bavette steak, both spectacular and cooked perfectly. The tasting menu was very reasonably priced. This restaurant is the rarest of finds--a world-class neighborhood restaurant, unpretentious and almost invisible on a side street, cozy and happy inside. Also a very fine and interesting wine list from which we chose a Sicilian wine. It had an unusual number of German and Austrian wines, becoming more common but still very rare.
Frances, for years you've been my favorite and you continue to please! You never fail to deliver on fresh and original tastes while balancing the beloved classics (bacon beignets to die for!). And we were thrilled about your new tasting menu that let us try almost everything on the menu without our normal tortuous decision-making and FOMO. The watermelon granita panna cotta dessert was a completely original and mind-blowing, yet also subtle dish. Bravo, Frances!
Tried the new-ish tasting menu offering for the first time. Perfect amount of food and great sampling of what they have to offer. Beignets and fritters, always delicious. Lovely pasta with uni butter, so yummy and savory. Then some perfect pork chop as well as a salmon dish. Lumberjack cake for a dessert, always a must, and some granita, to keep things summer-y. Will always recommend and try to get back to Frances.
Good service and great ambience. Food was good but not memorable.
The waiter, Jerry was fabulous! Super attentive, professional, knowledgeable, we loved him. The food was unique with superb flavor. Wine list esoteric and accessible. We have already made repeat reservations.
We ate at Frances for the first time last night and it was delightful! We tried the tasting menu which is a greatest hits of all the dishes people rave about. I didn't expect to like the Lumberjack cake, but it was great. Service and ambiance were great, too. Really enjoyed everything about it and will go back.
Nice restaurant worth to visit. The testing course is reasonabliy nice for the 1st time visitor.
We make a point of dining at Frances at least once a season. Summer is particularly special for the extraordinary Corn Soup. Smooth, creamy and full corn flavor. The rest of the meal, Beignets, Grilled Pork Chop, Risotto and Chocolate Pot de Creme were all special. The Risotto was a perfect base for the multiple additions. On top of the food is the exceptional serves. How well the staff Works together. Their knowledge, kindness, a quiet perfectly coordinated dance.
Frances is a delightful experience--food, friendly service, ambiance! Our waitstaff, Mara, was excellent and made us feel at home.
The tasting special was amazing. Great way to enjoy many items on the menu. Would highly recommend to anyone
this continues to be such a good restaurant! the chickpea fritters have gotten even better. Steak and salmon dishes were perfectly cooked. The light pickling of the summer vegetables with the salmon was inspired
My dinner at Frances was one of my all time favorite meals ever!! Every item had complex flavors and was presented beautifully!
Creative, attentive. Ordered Salmon and it was a bit too salty ... and slightly over done. Had to ask for bread and they only gave us one slice at a time
Frances is the best — they were so kind to bring us a treat for my sister’s birthday. We’ll be back!
My friend and I had a fun experience trying this restaurant and enjoying many interesting combinations of flavors. Noise level was good when we arrived at 5:30, became too loud by 7:00. We loved the bacon beignets and garbanzo fritters. The pasta with eggplant wasn't a dish that personally appealed to me and the salmon didn't have a combination of ingredients to make it a dish I'd order again with a few pepper slices and cherry slices and a small amount of farro. The corn soup was good and the peach pavlova was tasty. I am glad we dined there and if I lived closer I'd return to try all the appetizers with a glass of wine.
Very friendly relaxed service and clientele! The food was excellent and it was a fun time eating and chatting with nearby tables!
The place is a little crowded and noisy, but the food is spectacular and the staff friendly and attentive. Close enough to the Castro and the Mission if (as we did) you are going to events after dinner
One of my best meals ever. Great local community feel with highest levels of execution.
