Loved the food, service and presentation. One big drawback. if you want to be seated so close that you can see the nose hairs of other guest or hear every single word they are saying this is your place. I would not recommend this unless you want to sit right on top of other quests. It it understood that the rent is very high in San fran but sacrifice a few tables to provide a little breathing room between tables.
Great experience as usual. I got the snapper, hubby got the Bavette steak. Everything was delicious. Service is always on point and unpretentious. I wish the restaurant was not as loud, but hey, it’s a fully occupied small space on a Saturday night.
Always love going to Frances. The food is refined comfort food. Right down to the salads. They know how to bring delicious flavors to the simplest dishes.
Delicious food in a small restaurant tucked into the neighborhood. One of our favorite spots!
Food was way too salty. The salad was so salty it was inedible. The steak was chewy.
Hands down, my favorite place in town, year after year!
Wonderful food (as always). We chose the tasting menu and added the octopus appetizer, because why not? All items were excellent and we had plenty to eat. I would come to Frances for their chickpea pannise alone - a true treat.
Service was very slow and not very thoughtful. I expect better for the prices and difficulty of securing a reservation. Food was excellent.
Incredible level service by staff; the menu's variety; overall quality of food; and just the general value, they exceeded our plan evening's celebration. We have now been twice on our anniversary and every time is just "better". Excelled beyond expectations. The Servers was attentive yet allowed us time to enjoy each others' company. The menu change was noted upfront for a new offering and server recommended it as a way for us to explore the depth of their menu fully. The tasting menu of 10 small plates is the way to go if anyone reads this review...Food is top notch for this level of restaurant. Mara, our server, was incredibly sweet and joyful to assist us in our dining choices. Cheers to the staff.
Food is excellent and creative. Staff is friendly and professional. Somalier does wonders with the house wine. Love this restaurant! Mostly go for special occasions.
I have an intolerance to garlic (yes, quite unfortunate) that makes eating out rather interesting... the staff at Frances went out of their way to accommodate my issue and created a dish specifically for me keeping it garlic free and, thus, incident free. They were gracious and professional and provided an outstanding dining experience to a "problem" diner. It's just a great place to grab an exceptional bite in SF!
Food was really great, as were the wines choices. I also like the staff who are super Friendly we were celebrating a friends Birthday and all the staff acknowledge my friends Birthday.
I thought that Frances is very expensive for food that is very ordinary. I like to cook and although I thought the food was good, I didn't think it was great. I'm glad that someone gave us a gift card because I wouldn't want to waste our own money on just a basic meal that I make at home. I've come to the conclusion by all the rave reviews of Frances, that the diners who eat there don't know how to cook. I hope I don't sound too harsh, but the noise level and the tables crowded together really don't make for a terrific experience.
Every meal at Frances is a special occasion and this meal is no different. The staff are wonderful and friendly. The food is delightful. The ambience is always so lovely. Will go back for my next special everyday occasion!
Delicate enough to preserve the taste of each material, just like Japanese cuisine. It's really unfortunate, however, why so salty?? The atmosphere should be unexpectedly different...bustling and friendly, than you would imagine. I also unexpectedly enjoyed great old soul music from the audio set.
Frances has consistently been one of my favorite restaurants in San Francisco for years. The food is absolutely delicious and changes regularly with a few standards always in place for repeat customers. The service is welcoming, attentive and formal without being the least bit pretentious.
They are now offering a tasting menu, which puts a few choices from the evening's menu together and takes away the burden of having to pick just one thing.
I can't recommend this restaurant highly enough.
Good food although my steak was a bit undercooked. Service good but took a little long to get entree after appetizers and salads. Not quite as memorable as last time we ate there. Appetizers and salads were excellent and so was the steak even though a little too rare....
It was amazing as always!
We had a fantastic birthday dinner here for 4 people. The tasting menu was just right, it allowed us to sample a bit of everything. Loved the beignets, the Brussels sprouts, and the chickpea fritters, the red snapper and the Babette. Our waiter was outstanding and knew the menu and wine list to a T. Friendly, intimate neighborhood spot. Will definitely return.
This is the real deal. Unpretentious, FANTASTIC food, great service. A+ in all ways. You won't be disappointed.
Really impressed with the quality.
As well as the knowledge and helpfulness of our server.
Hope to return some day.
Amazing food and service. A new fave
We had a fabulous dinner here with friends and with the exception of one unusual appetizer (in only my opinion, not that of my friends), *everything* was stupendous. The service was stellar and truly attentive, which is somehow not the norm in most SF restaurants. We indulged in starters all the way though desserts. Though of course their menu likely changes regularly, I would note the boozy affogato and maple bacon beignets were not to be missed - yum! Though they were not giving away the wine list, the wines were very good and the server's knowledge of it was impressive. Thank you Team Frances, we'll recommend and return.
Frances never disappoints; the food is healthy, sophisticated and unpretentious, and the service is outstanding.
Frances is a dining experience not to be missed! Whenever we visit San Francisco we make certain to include dining at Frances in our plans! Each dish is prepared with tender loving care, evidenced by the wonderful combination of flavors and ingredients in each dish! The service is awesome! All the staff are very personable and committed to providing you with an incomparable dining experience!
Had the tasting menu – it was excellent. Been here a few times, always tasty, inventive food in an unpretentious environment.
The dining experience was great. Service was friendly with our server taking extra time to provide us with suggestions since this was our first visit to the restaurant. Enjoyed our evening very much.
Really good stuff. I def recommend going and letting the chef take the wheel. Super fancy. Glamacious. Radness. Tasty.
Service was outstanding. Kitchen was slow, food was well prepared but nothing we had was magical. For the reputation and pricing of this restaurant, things were fine but not great. I was hoping for great.
This place is consistently outstanding both in the food and the service. The wait staff is so helpful and friendly.....its always such a pleasure to go here.
Frances continues to be one of my favorite restaurants in San Francisco- it never fails to deliver an exceptional dining experience. Simply put - the food is to die for.
Basically the best experience we could have asked for
Excellent table away from other patrons bc of birthday. That was really sweet.
The service was outstanding. The food was regular to not that great. The garbanza fritters we had high hopes for, were actually not good at all and we didn't eat them.
We always celebrate our anniversary and other celebrations here. The food always hits the spot!
They asked us to move to the bar to seat someone else while we were drinking our wine and talking about a dead relative. Our wine was our dessert, if we were eating they wouldn’t have asked.
Food was great as always
Food took a while to come out. Wait staff was so great and very sweet to my 4 yr old!
We thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Wait staff and others were excellent!
