The largest party we can accommodate is six people. We have only one table that can seat 5 or 6 people. 6 people is the maximum party size that can be accommodated in restaurant. Reservations cannot be combined to create larger parties.
Reservations can be held for up to 15 minutes past the reservation time before forfeiture.
Wonderful service, creative food. Loved the bacon beignets, pasta appetizer, steak entree, good wine list
Maybe all the amazing reviews spoiled it a bit for me, but I thought it was just ok. We got the tasting menu and everything was pretty good, but nothing made me go wow. The restaurant is small and loud but the service was friendly and the menu prices reasonable, especially for SF. But for me, it all boils down to the food and it was good, but not great.
Amazing food, and wonderful service. Definitely would recommend!
I love Frances. I feel like the bavette steak has been on the menu for years, and it's never disappointed me. So perfectly done. Glad to see the same staff there too, they go a great job.
A very decent neighborhood spot: food is well prepared, prices are fair, warm and very competent service. Prix fixe is a good deal. But definitely not destination dining by any means, nothing was very interesting or exceptionally executed.
Consistently excellent food and service. One of the best in the City and Bay Area. Bravo!
The food was excellent and so was the service. Hard to get a reservation for party of 6 but worth it.
Great night out. Jerry was the best And convinced us to do the tasting menu which was absolutely superb, The chef was able to do things for us that were not on the menu.
We did the “Tasting Menu” and loved it! And being able to buy the house wine by the ounce was a nice touch, too. Super friendly staff. Everything came together for a great dinner!
Excellent food, service and wine! Always a winner!
Frances continues to be a great restaurant. However, the prices continue to rise, and I wonder whether $40 for an entree is reasonable. Also, while the servers are very knowledgeable, paying attention is no longer a forte: we had to flag our server down a number of times for things that should have been offered as a matter of course.
Love Frances! This was my second time here and this time they had a tasting menu offering @ $65 per person. This was a ten course meal full of different selections from the menu (We went through 6 appetizers (couple of bites per course), two mains, and two desserts. Everything was delicious! The highlights were the bacon beignets (of course ;)), the Spaghettini with Uni butter (as someone who doesn't like Uni, this was super delicious and I would have happily kept on eating it if there was more), and the Bavette Steak (sitting atop delicious baked corn bread pudding!). We had the house red wine which they sell by the ounce and it was amazing. Highly recommend Frances!
A tough reservation to get, as it seems always busy, even at early hours. We were lucky to get two counter seats at 6:15 PM. The menu is an ecclectic mix of "California fusion" - there definitely are other influences - asian, southwestern, etc., but mostly seems to be inspired by local ingredients and cuisine. The noise level is high, in a pretty small space. The service crew is challenged by the small space, but seem to have choreographed their moves well enough to get around in reasonably quick order. Sometimes you feel like you can't find your service person when you need something, but eventually they get there. At the recommendation of our server, we chose the testing menu - a 10 course meal designed for sharing between two people - fixed price $65/person. A nice mix of vegies, and proteins with some interesting sauces, and myriad of flavors - not things you'd come up with by yourself, but a nice melange... sizes ranged from quick bites(pumpkin&bacon fritters), to main courses (a grilled fish with fruit and vegetables + flank steak with hot peppers & broccolini), and some inbetweens (kale salad with cherry tomato). Desserts were good sized portion, and tasty (a gingerbreadish cake with salted caramel ice cream?, and a apple/fruit compote with rich cream dollop)
Enjoyed food and service!
In one word: lovely! Delicious food, great service, nice wine. I've been there twice and both times I've gotten the tasting menu, which is a great deal and definitely the way to go if it's your first time there. I think that next time I might get the a la carte, just so I can order the amazing-looking pork steak!
Together with sister restaurant Octavia you are guaranteed:
Excellent, creative cuisine.
Friendly, knowledgeable service.
Extremely pleasant, well conceived atmosphere and decor.
Very attractive staff in all ways.
Food and service was above average, but the noise level and cost were off-putting. I doubt I’ll return.
This is the 3rd time we've eaten at Frances and they continue to deliver a wonderful dining experience. From the food to the service, everything was perfect for my husband's birthday dinner!
Absolute must when visiting San Fran! We were amazed by the service and the food was incredible. We did the tasting plate and thought it was great value!
Wonderful! Attentive but unobtrusive and unpretentious. Incredible food. Would go back again!
Quite simply the best. I would recommend this place every time.
Had a very nice but also relaxed dinner with some old friends. We shared all items, and had a great time. The food and ambiance were perfect.
Been here multiple times in the past but not for sometime. So pleased it still is a well prepared and creative kitchen. Wonderful flavors and lot of thought going into the menu. Little Gem salad was extraordinary in a city where every restaurant has one on the menu!! The have to ask for bread is odd but I know some of the theories on this. Service was excellent and cleaning of table and new plates after each course was appreciated. Wine selection is good but overpriced . We travel to France 3 times a year and coming back here and paying what we do for a bottle versus Paris is very irritating.
But bravo for the great food and service. Our bill with tip was $200 so this is clearly a special occasion restaurant!!
Fun, versatile and delicious birthday dinner. Enjoyed every plate
The service is excellent, the majority of food we tried was also excellent but the tables are so close together you feel like you’re actually dining with strangers. If that isn’t a problem for you then Frances is well worth a visit.
Well it was my second time dining here and it was my friend ‘s first visut. We had amazing service at the bar by Jerry .. but I thought the last time I dined his name was Brian so who ever was the server at the bar is superb.. loved the special Complimentary Vermouth cocktail 🍸 very nice dinner to start off my Birthday celebrations 🎊
This is one of my favorite restaurants in San Francisco. My mother said this was the best food she has ever had.
We enjoyed a great meal. The staff was welcoming and attentive. It was a special occasion and they did not disappoint. We drove over from the East Bay. Was worth the drive into the city.
My husband and I went to Frances for our first date night after our son was born. I guess I didn't realize that we had booked bar seating which ordinarily wouldn't be bad except that the stools were very uncomfortable for a long meal. Since we hadn't been to Frances for a long time, we each got the tasting menu so we could try a variety of items. Each of the dishes were delicious, but we left still feeling hungry. The portions were comically small for two people. It was amazing the sizes of the dishes that we were expected to share. The rest of the experience was great, but we probably won't be returning again.
Took my mom here for her 86th birthday. Everything from the service, the appetizers, the cava and the delicious mains were outstanding.
Sadly, no mention was made of my birthday, even though we indicated as such on our reservation.......
Frances was recommended by a friend who used to live in the area, and during our visit we are definitely glad we checked it out. Fantastic food and a great scene. We enjoyed every part of our experience, especially dessert and the house wine selection.
Out of the ballpark flavors! Creative cuisine, lovely service. Get ready to drop upwards of $350 for dinner for four
Great food with a fun and casual ambiance. Can't wait to go back the next time I'm in SF.
Simply beautiful. Wonderful wine, fantastic staff, and of course great food. Could not recommend more.
In a word.....AMAZING. Creative menu, changes daily, great choices, good service, call way in advance for reservation. Well worth it.
One of my top meals in SF
Frances' star was a little dimmer for me on this visit. I've always enjoyed my experiences at this restaurant, but this time it was extremely loud, and the service was colder and less elevated than in the past. Food was slow to appear. It was over an hour and 15 minutes after we were seated that our entrees finally arrived at the table. We ordered bouchees, an appetizer, entrees and sides, as well as dessert, and each course took what felt like an eternity to arrive. At least, when they showed up, they were incredibly delicious and perfectly prepared. The vegetables are always outstanding, prepared with seasonal ingredients in inventive yet unpretentious ways.
Love everything about this place! The food is excellent, the service is good and fun, and the tasting menu is an excellent value!
