About this restaurant

  • Neighborhood gem
  • Good for special occasions
  • Great for outdoor dining
An ode to fire and sea, Fort Oak delivers the bold, wood-fired flavors that define Chef Brad Wise’s signature style. Centered around a live-fire hearth, the restaurant offers elevated yet approachable dishes alongside a refined seafood and raw bar. Smoke is the through line - simple, high-quality ingredients are transformed by flame into plates full of depth and character.

Dry-aged ribeyes, duck, and whole branzino showcase the hearth’s intensity, while freshly shucked oysters and seafood towers bring a raw, briny counterpoint. And while the meats and seafood command attention, the vegetables have earned a reputation of their own - charred, caramelized, and layered with surprising complexity. Some say they steal the show - but that’s up to you to decide.

Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Brad Wise

From the OpenTable editors: Since it opened in Mission Hills in 2019, Fort Oak has received numerous accolades both locally and nationally: That year, San Diego Magazine recognized it as a "Critic's Pick Best New Restaurant" and Conde Nast Traveler named it one of San Diego's best restaurants. In 2021, chef Brad Wise’s bold, wood-fired flavors showcased in dishes like lamb merguez kefta and grilled branzino with pepperonata also earned the restaurant a MICHELIN Plate. Book the chef’s counter for an intimate look at Wise and his team cooking on the open hearth.

Wonderful as always. The Chef's Counter experience is always a treat. Such kind service and excellent delicious food. Thanks to the team, especially Adam, Diana, John, Patrick and Chef Ivanhoe (his linguine dish was exquisite!).

We had an absolutely delicious meal! Specialty drinks before to start, The Fairlaine, OldFashion & Greyhound. Sourdough bread, old bay prawns, coppa ham starters Charred caulilini side, 2 pork chop and New York Strip. We brought our own wine. Amazing flavors! Desserts, Almond Joy (Wow!) cookies & cream beignets, (wow-wow) & a complimentary sorbet thank you!!!(Lime/Cucumber). All 4 of us delighted w our meals, our servers, Miguel/Carlos were wonderful too. Full house and we weren’t in a rush but we did wait at least 30 minutes for our main course. We asked for take home boxes that weren’t returned causing us to forget about until we’d left but we came back for them! Food here is just So good!

When I read prime steakhouse i think of a very different ambience. However every dish was excellent except the steak and pork chop. They were good, but not GREAT. Yes I’m a snob and but my meats butcher direct and still get one as good as I make. I live the wine by the glass selection. Finally a Vega Sicilia $40 actually if you know the wine it’s a fair price and paid it gladly. Dessert-the “Almond Joy” was not such a joy. That gets a 6.5/10. Jeff our server gets a 9/10. I know he has a lot of tables but you need to scan all of them as you serve any one within the group assigned. He missed a bit otherwise it’s a 10/10 for him. One negative, no valet parking but it wasn’t all that bad. I’d recommend it. If you’ve never had my steaks you’d give theirs a 9/10. So go and enjoy…. R

We had a wonderful evening at the chef’s counter dinner at Fort Oak last night. We were seated in the kitchen where we could observe all the action of one chef using the open fire grill, and others preparing other menu items to be served in the restaurant. We sat comfortably at the counter with other food lovers (12 total) for a delicious 7 course dinner. The food, wine and service were all excellent. This is a special experience worth the price.

The menu has a lot of creativity in it. If you have picky eater, you might want to check it out before you go. We enjoyed the roasted carrots (yum) and the lamb Kafka (a little heavy on the cumin but good). The steak was a little fatty for a New York strip. The service is top-notch and the location is great. They are dog friendly, which seems to be a cost of entry in Mission Hills. We will go back and try some other items. The future upgrade in score is possible.
