About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Good for groups
  • Great for happy hour
The Eating House 1849 pays homage to Hawaii’s vibrant culinary heritage, using what was available from local farmers, ranchers, foragers and fishermen.  It’s here that award-winning Chef Roy Yamaguchi blends these two worlds: the easy ambiance and simple flavors of a plantation town with bold modern cuisine.

Eating House 1849 Waikiki offers a vibrant dining experience, blending bold island flavors with a warm, tropical ambiance. The open-air dining room, with its modern-rustic decor and soft lighting, creates an inviting backdrop, complemented by attentive service that made us feel genuinely welcome from the moment we arrived. Despite a few hiccups, the staff’s warmth elevated the evening. We started with the Crispy Brussels Sprouts and the Starters Sampler, both arriving hot and bursting with flavor. The sprouts struck a perfect balance of crunch and zesty seasoning, while the sampler’s variety set an exciting tone for the meal. For entrées, we enjoyed the Pono Pork Ragout’s rich, savory depth and the Butterfish Kamameshi’s comforting, umami-packed textures. The MEKAJIKI (Hawaiian Broadbill Swordfish) came in two preparations: one with a luxurious truffle caper beurre blanc and creamy risotto, though it arrived slightly cold, muting the sauce’s richness, and another with vibrant pancit noodles, watercress, and crisp cabbage and carrots, offering a lighter, refreshing balance. Unfortunately, our table’s position under an AC vent led to water dripping every few minutes, disrupting conversation and the meal’s flow. The staff wiped it down once but didn’t offer to relocate us, which was a noticeable oversight given their otherwise stellar service. Desserts redeemed the evening. The Red Velvet Cream Cheese Skillet was indulgent yet balanced, with a warm, gooey center. The Lemon Blueberry Cheesecake delivered a tangy-sweet brightness, and the Passion Fruit Dreamsicle offered a creamy, tropical zing that lingered delightfully. Each was a sweet, memorable finish. Despite the seating issue, Eating House 1849’s flavorful dishes, warm service, and inviting atmosphere make it a standout. With a quick fix to the AC problem, it could easily become a go-to for locals and visitors craving elevated island cuisine. I’d return in a heartbeat.

Incredible dining experience! Food was absolutely delicious and we appreciated the keiki menu that includes a starter (that came out quickly) and dessert, making the restaurant extra family-friendly. Prices are definitely justified for the quality of food. The aloha hour from 4-5 is also an awesome deal for cocktails! Best meal we have had in Waikiki!

A friend and her family were back in Hawaii, and we met at Eating House 1849 in the International Marketplace for dinner. She watches what she eats, and the restaurant had a gluten-free menu for her. I ordered a bottle of 2020 Domaine Delarche ‘Les Belles Filles’, a Chardonnay from Pernand-Vergelesses, Cote de Beaune. It was pale gold and fruity … A nice change from an “in your face” California Chardonnay and a decent value at $130btl ($74 in the store). Her (under-age) nephew had a virgin Pina Colada ($12). I selected three appetizers: Crispy Brussel Sprouts ($17), Kona Kampachi (Yellowtail Amberjack) Crudo ($29), and Roy’s signature Mongolian BBQ Back Ribs ($22). Our servers provided the sauce for the Kampachi and the lup cheong for the Brussel sprouts separately so my friend could adhere to her gluten-free diet. The sprouts were charred and flavorful and didn’t need the lup cheong. The Kampachi needed its sauce and sprinkles; without it, it would have been too dry. The ribs were as I remember them … tender and spicy sweet. We all ordered fish … My friend and her husband chose grilled Kampachi, with truffle caper beurre blanc sauce, over risotto ($53ea). Her nephew chose grilled swordfish with the red Thai curry sauce over Yama potatoes and sauteed kale ($52). I went with grilled Kampachi, with the sizzling Serrano Ginger vinaigrette, served with oden vegetables and rice ($53). Hah, I asked for a small dollop of mayonnaise for my white rice. Don’t be shocked till you try it; I can’t eat white rice without it. When one dines at a Roy’s, one must order the Melting Hot Chocolate Soufflé, so I ordered it for my guests ($17ea). My dessert was a glass of chardonnay. My guests loved their meal, and I was pleased as my prior visit left me wanting. Service by Kimmie and others was fine and the shade over the open dining area made it comfortable during a June evening. Recommended! Rating: 4.25.

We love the innovation of all the dishes that are one-of-a-kind and super delicious! Bao pork buns with pickled cucumber, etc. are phenomenal. I am still longing for the Manila clams in a delicious sauce dish. These are just a few as they are all phenomenal and of course nobody makes better mai ties and conversation anywhere in Hawaii betterthan the bartenders Louis and Sasha!

We went to celebrate our anniversary. The staff were very attentive and competent. The food and drinks were delicious. The noise level made it very easy to for us to have a conversation. We will definitely return for dinner even without a special occasion. Tip: Plan to arrive early to find parking, especially on weekends. Thanks to the staff for providing us with a very memorable experience.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ We had an amazing experience at The Eating House! We arrived earlier than our reservation, and the kind host was able to seat us without any issue. We chose to dine outdoors, and it was absolutely perfect—the ambiance and weather couldn’t have been better.Emma and Lauren were our phenomenal servers. I have severe food allergies, and eating out can be very stressful. But Emma listened carefully, reviewed my detailed allergy card, and worked with the kitchen staff to create a safe and delicious meal just for me. I ended up with sautéed mahi-mahi and the yuzu soba noodles with vegetables—no butter, no mammal byproducts—and it was phenomenal. Truly one of the best meals I’ve had in a long time. The rest of my family also loved their creative, beautifully prepared dishes. We had a wonderful evening celebrating our vacation in Hawaii and are so grateful to the team at The Eating House for making it so special. We highly recommend.

My family and I have eaten at many of Roy’s restaurants. Even the mainland ones before the split. It was very nice to try a different menu but with the same craftsmanship as expected of Roy’s. The new flavors and creations were a very welcomed change to the Roy’s menu we have become accustomed to. Service was excellent especially in accommodating my last minute changes. Showed up early and requested to be seated outside instead of inside. Local music was awesome. Cocktails, entrees and desserts were awesome. Jasmine was our server and she was excellent as we’ve come to expect from a Roy’s restaurant.
