Service was extremely slow for a restaurant that was practically empty on a Sat night at 7pm. Food was of poor quality. I will never return.
Later night dinner with my wife after a long week! Exceeded my expectations. Very quiet. Politicians on break so was not busy. Awesome music relaxing playing in background. Hey York steak was deliciuos. Wife had a salad and filet skewers! She loved them. Had several old Fashioned drinks. Very Nice evening! Service was very good.
Bad night for staff. After a big event out of lamb and cocktail olives. Who does that? But waiter was the best and food was really the main point and really great!
Loved the steak!
For the price you pay for a plate and a beverage your better off at another restaurant. Service was slow and the food did not reflect the price in the slightest. Ambiance was the only thing going for this restaurant.
This is the 3rd time my husband and I have dined with you. Every cocktail, dinner and dessert has been amazing. The filet mignon is the best I have had. One of my favorites is your truffle mac & cheese. Love your cocktails and their names! We really have a nice time when visiting The Diplomat, not to mention how nice your staff is.
Regrettably, we chose to dine here for the first time after passing on our usual steak restaurant downtown.
It took 1 hour to receive our meal during what appeared to be a relatively not so busy evening (Saturday night).
When spending a certain sum of money on what one would expect based on the menu selection and pricing, it is assumed that the food, especially the steak, is going to be of a prepared with exacting standards, cooked exactly as requested, and served within a reasonable period of time. Each of these fell far short of those assumptions. The steak was not close to being prepared as requested (well-done v. medium is not difficult to ascertain) and had to be returned for fine tuning. Our fries were missing an advertised ingredient (truffle oil), the advertised separate addition to the steak consisting of sautéed onions and mushrooms were merely chopped and placed on top of the steak with no hint of ever coming into contact with heat to sauté them, and the cup of lobster bisque soup (which was delicious), had more lobster in it when compared to the side of lobster mac and cheese dish.
The crab cakes were delicious as well as the mixed vegetables. Suffice it to say that we will not be returning here after spending more than a couple of hundred dollars (for 2 people, not including tip, dessert, coffee or spirits.) Cost not being a complaint, we were sadly (understatement) disappointed in the abilities of the kitchen and the time in which it took to serve our meal, in light of the cost and sparsely populated dining room. The waiter was great, but he was dependent on the kitchen which in our view, utterly and miserably failed him and us.
We should have stuck with our usual and well-known go-to steakhouse a few blocks away closer to the Golden 1 Center where, for years, we have never been disappointed, about anything.
1st/last time dining here. 6pm dinner res for our anniversary before 8pm concert 6 blocks away. Arrived on time, seated promptly by hostess. Patiently sat 25 min before server (or anyone) acknowledged us. Ask server for drink menu/wine list and 2 glasses of table water w/ lemon slice. +10 min for 2 waters via bus boy; no lemon but let it go as thirsty. +5 min server brings our drinks and takes order for soup/salad and entrees (had to prompt server to share evening’s specials). Server then ignores us for next 25 min. +10 min, chef abruptly brings my wife her entree yet no sign of our starters; chef was heavily perspiring and in no mood to pause for Q’s. +15 min, wife able to politely flag server and inquire about missing starters and my entree; server deflects as 1st/2nd courses mix up. +10 min, still no sign of starters or my entree, wife’s glass empty. Now 7:15pm, short on time to make concert. +5 min stroll to bar myself to request the manager since server absent. Bartender claims to be a manager so briefly explain unfortunate situation and ask for check. +5 min for head chef to come out and confront us at our table as at to what problem is. Calmly explained and chef said we’d need to wait for server to present us adjusted check—zero apology, just attitude. +5 min, server says will box my food, I decline and re-request our check plain and simple. +5 min, check comes for drinks and my wife’s entree; server was sure to note adjustment for missing starters and my entree as a special gesture. Paid our check in full and left. Appalling experience. Restaurant clearly struggling yet unconcerned about swindling its patrons. Restaurant 30% full yet observed 3 other tables nearby face similar experiences
What I observed was, service was slim to none throughout the restaurant.
We had a great lunch at the Diplomat. Aaron, our server, was very attentive. We really appreciated his level of service.
Overall amazing experience and food was amazing thank you
We waited 40 minutes for our meal. I ordered the lobster tail at approximately $39 and it was probably 4 inches long, leaving me very hungry. Had I known it would be so small I may have ordered sides but how much would that cost? My husband ordered the Double cut Pork chop that was so thick that it was cooked improperly and extremely tough. He couldn't eat it and had to send it back. We both left hungry and paid a lot to do so. It was very loud! The waitress was sweet and unfortunately had to continually apologize, which should never happen. We did not have to pay for the pork chop but left very disappointed.
It is a beautiful restaurant. They were out of something’s on the restaurant and also the drink menu but it was overall a good place to go out for the night. It is next to a parking garage which the noise was a little loud but could handle.
This was a terrible choice to take our family for Mother’s Day brunch. I am upset that I didn’t read previous reviews because after our experience it could be determined that the “scathing” reviews were actually quite polite. We spent 2 hours and we waited for food off of a 5 item menu that we never received. Flavorless, cold at times, lacking items in the name of the dish, and incompetence in the kitchen. One example, ham and CHEESE omelet...no cheese! Bistro filet...not a fillet, just a microwaved steak. The servers are nice, don’t get me wrong. The kitchen needs to have been fired entirely from top to bottom. I won’t go back until we have heard that the restaurant has closed down and reopened. It shouldn’t take long, it’s that bad.
Great food and service.
On what should have been a busy Thursday igbt, we were the only party in the restaurant. I ordered a Ribeye that wasn’t really nicely grilled. I asked for medium and it was rare. Everything is Ala carts yet your plate isn’t big enough to put the sides on.
Dinner for 6. We had a great time, excellent food, top notch service. What I would expect from a high-end Steakhouse. Postcard type view of the State Capitol from the patio.
Not the best experience. This was our third and last time we will be here. They just can’t seem to get it right.
Some of the food was good, some was not. Server and her assistant didn’t seem to know what they were doing. In fact it was as if it were their first day and never trained. Didn’t know the difference between serving spoons for side dishes and tea spoons. No bread plates, etc.
Server didn’t know the difference between a N.Y. or a Ribeye. Lobster bisque was too salty and inedible. I could go on, but won’t. Thank you
Came for my birthday and was honestly disappointed. They were literally out of quite a few staple items on the menu and seemed like the servers were totally unaware kept coming back saying oh we are out oh all three of those items are out too. Service wasn’t real great, food tasted like It was already prepared ahead of time like the mashed potatoes were packaged. For the amount of money we spent (2 people, Bill over $300) I’d expect much more quality and service. Place was dead we were one of 2 tables the whole time!
We definitely won’t be dining here again.
Great food great environment. Will definitely be back.
We were excited to try this restaurant and decided to do happy hour before a show at the community theater. Service was extremely slow. The shrimp cocktail we ordered was not deveined. It was $17 and we didn’t order a whole lot else. It took 20 minutes before our waitress came back and by then, it was too late to re-order it. It took another 15 minutes before we got the bill since ours had to be fix with the removal of the shrimp cocktail... which we were reminded of twice as the excuse for the long wait... What we were able to eat was good but for 3 appetizers and 4 cocktails on happy hour the check was over $100. Just seemed a bit over priced for a mediocre happy hour and bad service. Will consider going back for dinner since we didnt get to try their specialty which I can only assume is the steak... maybe it was just an off day? We barely made it to our show on time and were ready to leave about 30 minutes earlier. I rarely complain about restaurants. I love our Sacramento food scene and trying new places. And I don’t mind spending money on an experience. But it was almost like our waitress went on lunch or something. She disappeared for that long. Very bummed and disappointed.
We were very disappointed with the food. vegetables were served cold. The meet poorly cooked and when returned for the second time it was still poorly cooked. The salad was almost inedible. What was billed as potatoes au graten was under cooked potatoes swimming in a watery cream sauce.
The restaurant is warm and inviting and the food was delicious.
I made reservations (with a credit card for deposit) days in advance of which the restaurant called to verify. The greeting was very nice. However once we ordered we were told that the restaurant was out of multiple entree’s. This was due to an event they had downstairs. A manager came to apologize and offered complimentary side dishes, however her intent fell short when the side dishes arrived 15 minutes after the meal. The shortage of food didn’t stop there. At dessert.... same thing, they were out of some of the desserts. This was not a cheep meal, nor was it intended to be. I do expect quality of food and service at this price point. I will never be back to this restaurant.
There was only one other party in the restaurant and yet they were out of a lot of things. They did not have many things on the menu, including some steaks. I find it odd that a steakhouse is out of many different steaks. Three times a person ordered a beer at our table only to be told that they have none left. What food we did order was excellent and the waitress was very apologetic but if I was to recommend this place, I would tell someone to call ahead of time to make sure they have food available!
Service was polite professional and courteous however, things did move a little slow. We were seated 40 minutes after reservation. We had asked multiple times for lemon and the courses came out at a very slow pace. No I understand it was a busy night but, we were One of the later reservations and the restaurant was clearing out by the time we were served. All in all a great experience though we will be back.
They need to redo their food menu immediately. Replace chef!!
We could not talk or get caught up on our day due to constant interruptions by the staff. I was asked how my food was before I had taken a bite. I can’t tell you if it’s okay until I take a bite.
More than once we were brought a shared entree without any plates.
Way overpriced for what we got. $15.00 for a rose...really?
The most annoying was the constant interruptions. If you see people are having a discussion don’t walk up and interrupt. It’s rude!!
We probably won’t be back
We were greeted with a warm welcome and friendly smile. Seated on time. Our server was very helpful and explained everything to a T. We shared the Tomahawk steak which was cooked to perfection. Romantic atmosphere as well. Afterwards we had a cocktail at the bar. Bartenders Tyler and Brett were amazing and knowledgeable of fine wine and whiskey. Best time ever and we will be returning.
The valentine day prefix meal was ok and very over priced. The first meal was the lobster bisque that only had one lover piece and was luck warm. The scallops was raw and had some weird green sauce on them which was only one scallop that was finely sliced. The steak tartare was small and not that good as well. The third dish was a sorbet drink that was half full. The fourth meal was a steak that we had to share and we also had to share the side of mash potatoes. The desert were creme brulee and chocolate mousse cake that was just ok not the best way to end the night
The staff was very friendly and attentive. There was a few people at the bar but other than our table there was not a sole in site for a Friday evening at 7pm. The food was good except the fish was NOT. We were a larger party and three different fish items were ordered. All of them had an overly fishy taste. The server credited back one of the three. In general the appearance of the restaurant has not changed since it was previously Chops. My experience was so so at best. I will not be going back.
Very nice restaurant with great food in a quiet intimate setting.
The dine out menu choices: the salad was gritty, the bisque was divine. the main dish of salmon was flavorful but less than 2 oz and the size of serving was 1 by 3-4 inches at most; the dessert on the menu said eclair with raspberries and ice cream. It was one 1 by 2 inch mini eclair with 1 raspberry and zero ice cream. I asked the server about the discrepancy. He dutifully went and asked. He came back to tell us there had been complaints about the ice cream so they chose to not provide it and not change the menu.
I will not return.
Couldn’t get through the filet. Too tough. Out of lower cost wines.
Great place and great food! Came here for the Sac Dine Downtown event and am glad to be able to try this place out with no prior knowledge of the restaurant. Will plan to come back with my wife on another occasion.
Way over priced for the amount of food. My salmon was so sad. It maybe was 2 oz. I understand we did the dine downtown deal... but really!!!
My husband and I decided to try this steakhouse for the dine downtown Sacramento week. First the waitress got my drink order wrong. Then we kept waiting for bread that did not come. We were served our lobster bisque and I asked where the bread was and the lady said we charge extra for it! I’ve never been to a steakhouse where they charge extra for bread. However it was worth the wait because the fresh bread was amazing to dip in the soup. I ordered the fillet mignon wrapped in bacon stuffed with asparagus and a side of potatoes. When the meal arrived I was shocked! The steak was so small it was the size of a Silverdollar and had only one piece of asparagus in it. Then the potatoes were two extra mini potatoes on the side. It barely met the requirements for potatoes! Lol I went home hungry! The dessert was a bite-size eclair cut in half cut in half, you could maybe savor it with two bites if you’re lucky! We went to five other restaurants for the dine downtown week and all the other portions at the restaurants were normal and even abundant compared to our experience here. I understand it was a special event but they should not have downsized their portions so much or we would’ve likely come back.
I really wanted to like The Diplomat. We went for my wife's birthday, which was supposed to be noted in the reservation but no mention was made of it. She asked specifically to go for her birthday and I had heard very good things but was, for the most part, underwhelmed. The food was good, not great. For a steakhouse, my steak was overcooked and under seasoned but the type of place not to provide seasoning for the table. The soup was the star of the show, just a large bowl of the lobster bisque with some good bread would have been a fine meal. The dessert was an eclair the size of my thumb, the likes of which I could and have bought at Costco and frankly, the Costco one was better. I'm glad we ate there during Dine Downtown week, as the meal cost considerably less than their normal prices, but I would expect this to be a special event for them to shine and entice me back on a regular night. Instead, it felt like they were participating because they had to, not because they wanted to. Service was adequate, though rushed, like they really wanted to turn the table, despite being barely half full. All in all, I wouldn't return and with the amazing variety of restaurants available Down/Midtown, for the money, I would recommend just about anywhere else.
One of the worst meals I have ever had combined with flickering lights, an old napkin under the table, and a waiter that reeked of BO. Definitely a dissapointment.
