About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Charming
  • Great for creative cocktails
Compère Lapin - noun - "kom-pare la-pan" - 1. anthropomorphic rabbit character who served as the mischievous protagonist in Creole and Caribbean folk tales; 2. Chef Nina Compton's restaurant at the Old No 77 Hotel & Chandlery in the Warehouse Arts District of New Orleans.

Meals aren’t about trends, shock value, or opulence.
Meals are about moments, memories and those who surround you at your table.
We believe in the complexity of simplicity, and the power of pure flavors. Our histories, vast and varied, deserve to be memorialized and romanticized by dishes that at once remind us of home and transport us to somewhere new.

We don’t make food for everyone else, we make food for you.

Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Nina Compton

From the OpenTable editors: At Compère Lapin, James Beard Award-winning chef Nina Compton dazzles with showstopping dishes that marry her Caribbean heritage and French fine dining pedigree. Dig into favorites like goat curry and broiled shrimp with Calabrian chili butter in a stylish space dressed with exposed brick and warm woods. Don’t miss award-winning cocktails like The Copper Hopper—a tropical, tequila-forward drink served in a copper bunny mug, a nod to the restaurant’s namesake folklore rabbit.

Food was great and ambience was lovely. However, the service felt a bit off - our waitress seemed quite busy, and the restaurant overall looked understaffed. It took a while for us to place our order, and when we had additional requests, we often had to flag down other staff since our waitress was hard to find. One example was the goat curry with gnocchi: it clearly had a broth-like consistency and definitely needed a spoon, but none was brought to the table. We eventually had to ask someone else for one because our waitress was nowhere in sight. Another funny moment was when she came over to ask if we needed more water, we said yes, and she refilled my glass but forgot my partner’s. It seemed like she was just overwhelmed trying to manage too much at once. Overall, it was a mixed experience, but we’d love to come back another time and hope to see some improvement in the service.

They overcharged us at first - and even though they corrected it, it was shady. The hot chicken wasn’t spicy but had cardamom, all spice and something else - not good at all. The grits were also undercooked. The cappuccino was like a latte. Just not good overall. The service was the only redeeming factor.

Hi Delores, We're sorry to hear that your experience at Compère Lapin didn't meet your expectations. We strive to provide the best quality food and service to our guests, and it seems we fell short this time. We apologize for the overcharge and the issue with the hot chicken. We also regret that the grits didn't meet your expectations. Your feedback is invaluable to us and we'll certainly use it to improve. We're glad to hear that you found our service satisfactory, though. We hope you'll give us another chance to impress you in the future. Compère Lapin Management Team

Always come here every time we’re in NOLA. The biscuits, fried chicken, goat gnocchi dish, fun cocktail menu… all of it is so great. Also very kid friendly with a pasta dish our toddler loves.

I love a restaurant that serves excellent food in a casual setting and Compere Lapin did just that. I ordered the "Just Feed Me" tasting menu (love the name). After the server confirmed with the cooking staff the items that would be provided, I asked for two substitutions which were granted. The turkey empanadas were a flavor bomb - I don't particularly like empanadas, but these were exceptional. The tuna ceviche was very light, refreshing, and also full of flavor. The chocolate cake with guava sorbet was decadent and delicious. Service was excellent, and I felt valued. Definitely recommend.

The Curried Goat was exceptional! The aroma of the broth, the tenderness of the meat, the sweetness of the gnocchi… all work together to deliver a memorable dish.
