About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Charming
  • Great for creative cocktails
Compère Lapin - noun - "kom-pare la-pan" - 1. anthropomorphic rabbit character who served as the mischievous protagonist in Creole and Caribbean folk tales; 2. Chef Nina Compton's restaurant at the Old No 77 Hotel & Chandlery in the Warehouse Arts District of New Orleans.

Meals aren’t about trends, shock value, or opulence.
Meals are about moments, memories and those who surround you at your table.
We believe in the complexity of simplicity, and the power of pure flavors. Our histories, vast and varied, deserve to be memorialized and romanticized by dishes that at once remind us of home and transport us to somewhere new.

We don’t make food for everyone else, we make food for you.

Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Nina Compton

From the OpenTable editors: At Compère Lapin, James Beard Award-winning chef Nina Compton dazzles with showstopping dishes that marry her Caribbean heritage and French fine dining pedigree. Dig into favorites like goat curry and broiled shrimp with Calabrian chili butter in a stylish space dressed with exposed brick and warm woods. Don’t miss award-winning cocktails like The Copper Hopper—a tropical, tequila-forward drink served in a copper bunny mug, a nod to the restaurant’s namesake folklore rabbit.

Always good! Starting with biscuits then entrees of fried chicken (amazing), lamb and the vegan dish. All were delish paired with a wonderful white Chateau Neuf du Pope recommended by the super friendly sommelier. Our server was also terrific. Oh and the bread pudding!!!!

We visit New Orleans once a year and always enjoy dining at Compere Lapin. The staff makes the experience all the more special. Cory, the manager went the extra mile to make us feel at home. Nina knows her business well and through the years continues to thrive in this field that is so competitive. From Miami, we’ll see you next year!

Specific review during jazz fest so admittedly a busy time Service was incredible at the beginning four our group of 5 - friendly and thorough. Helped with ordering and gave recs. The biscuits and butter were stellar, as was the tuna ceviche and the clams pasta dish. Everything else was insanely salty (hush puppies, fish dip, croquettes, pork belly). As the night progressed the restaurant got busier and the service noticeably declined. There were 3 waiters for the entire restaurant that night. Next, our waiter or food runner (I didn’t see because they were behind me) accidentally spilt goat curry down my back - hot and fragrant! And not just a little bit, but a good amount. Top ruined. I received a short apology but nothing taken off bill or offer for dry cleaning. It also took 20 min to pay the bill at the end due to a (very sweet) trainee who wasn’t really up to speed yet.

Food was great. Incredible flavors and well conceived and executed dishes. Soft shell crab, ceviche, fried chicken were standouts. Must get an order of the biscuits!! The was professional and prompt. Shout out to Cory, the sommelier, who recommended a new wine which he just got in and it drank and paired beautifully with our meal.

The ambiance and vibe at this restaurant is exceptional. Fine dining, yet cozy and warm too. The food was outstanding. We had all seafood items and each was distinct and delicious. The wine list is extensive, but the sommelier and staff were very helpful. Highly recommend!

We loved our dinner here. Service was excellent. The room was vibey but quiet. They were able to accommodate a last-minute reservation change. All the food was so delicious - really interesting flavors and menu options. So many restaurants in New Orleans but this one is extra special - I recommended it to all my friends.

Our server Aidan was absolutely fantastic! He was attentive and explained and guided us through the menu. He even made my birthday special in a couple different ways.
