Caffe Milano Ratings and Reviews
We had a reservation for two following the Women’s Rights March downtown. We were hungry and in casual clothes. We were happy with our service, table and food. The chicken parmigiana could use more flavor from herbs but it was still good. I would recommend this cafe. I often have lunch here with clients.
I made reservations at Caffe Milano based on availability, and one referral from a colleague. My boyfriend, his mother, and I all ordered the filet mignon, medium-rare. Theirs came out perfectly, however, mine came out medium-well. I took two bites and called the server over to ask if they could cook me a new filet as it was so overcooked. He took my plate and went to the kitchen. We waited 10 minutes for him to reappear again... this time be brought me a plate that had more blood on it than a big red bus, and quite frankly, a cut of meat that was not filet. It was braised short rib but plated with the accompaniments of the filet dish. There was even still twine tied around the bottom of the beef. It was so blatant that when he set the plate on the table the beef split in two (much like a braised short rib would, but not, however, an 8oz filet mignon) — long story short I refused to eat the plate, again. I’ve never had a bloodier dish put infront of me, so clearly someone didn’t let the meat rest, but regardless it was the wrong cut of beef! I’m not sure if someone didn’t know what they were doing in the kitchen, or if they ran out of filet & thought I wouldn’t notice??? But the true proverbial icing on the cake was how no manager ever approached our table to apologize. There were several running around, and not one ever came over to ask what they could do to remedy the situation. When my boyfriend’s father attempted to speak to one directly he would not leave his office. I was absolutely appalled at what transpired at Caffe Milano, a restaurant that is supposed to be a level above the rest. I will not be recommending this restaurant in good conscience. I cannot risk them receiving the same level of disregard. Very, very disappointing.
The service here is exceptional! Combined with the amazing ambiance, terrific wine list and authentic dishes, we were so impressed that we made reservations here two nights in a row. TIP- Make the reservation.
We arrived a bit early for our reservation and asked if we could wait for a table outside (the lighting, heaters, street life, all-around ambiance outside is lovely). The host instantly sent someone to prepare a table for us and energetically welcomed us inside, which was packed. Seeing there was no room for us to wait at the bar and without skipping a beat, he went to the back, retrieved a stool and pushed it up to a small table with a candle next to the bar. He flagged the bartender to ensure we were noticed and not two minutes later she left her busy bar to deliver our drinks to our little table with a smile. In less than five minutes the host returned, remembering our names, and invited us to our outside table. Our waiter was very kind and knowledgeable (he also recognized us the second night, welcomed us back and asked how our day in between had been). Both nights we noticed the staff's exceptional ability to treat guests professionally yet as if we were long-time friends. There are several Italian options down 5th, but none compare.
We invited another couple for our first experience & all loved it! Service was great & food wonderful. Very good experience. We had prosciutto & mozarella, shrimp, zucchini & calamari appetizers & we all had veal dishes. Some with arugala salad & some with rigatoni. Our server, Ivan, was excellent. 5+*
We love going to Caffe Milano for their Happy Hour, which is one of the best deals around! They one the only restaurant I know of where you can pick any item from the menu for Happy Hour. The food is always good, service is nice and friendly, and it's always busy and energetic during happy hours. If you go for Happy Hour, make sure to have a reservation, otherwise you may be waiting for a while. Highly recommend!
We were seated on time for our reservation. The decor is very nice. The issue was with the food, and the quality for the price. My partner ordered the octopus, which was a large portion and good. We ordered an appetizer of Heirloom tomatoes [the more expensive tomatoes!] and buffalo mozzarella. The cheese was tasty and a large portion---but the tomatoes, except for one green slice, were like the common ones you get at the grocery in the winter in a three pack, cut in quarters, definitely NOT Heirloom! I mentioned to the waiter that I did not get the listed Heirlooms and he just looked at the plate and said "Oh, I guess we ran out!" He offered to get me more of the bland tomatoes but I declined, and I thanked him, but stated I had ordered the Heirloom [and the dish was close to $20] but he walked away. Then the Pappardelle pasta entree was served room temperature and the noodles were all stuck together, overcooked. This is not just a casual Italian Cafe but a restaurant with an expensive menu so I would expect better quality for the price. We did not order dessert, so I cannot comment on that item. As a chef, if I ran out of an expensive item, like Heirloom tomatoes, I would just tell the diner and not send out an inexpensive, tasteless substitute. I would rather the waiter + kitchen had just been honest and stated that the appetizer was not available as listed :-(
Bench seating, terribly uncomfortable, and very spread apart from my husband across the table, high noise chatter. Food was great, and generous potions, for most of us ,table of 5 .home made spaghetti noodles were not palatable .Happy hour is for food mostly, 5$ wine that is just palatable.
Great spot for a family meal (all adults) to celebrate New Years Day. Our server was excellent and food was good. I would have given FIVE STARS across the board but my meal had undercooked pasta - two others had the same type of pasta which was perfectly cooked. Our server offered to replace but then I would not have eaten with my family so I didn't send it back. I did try each of their meals and they were good. The shrimp/calamari app was good and the beef carpaccio was outstanding. The Tiramisu and Choc Volcano were delicious.
We were there for New Year’s Eve dinner and the service was great .
We could have thought otherwise saying it was New Years Eve but this was not the case and we were definitely not disappointed !
This is not our first time at Milanos and it will definitely not be our last !
