    First time at Aster and this is a gem in Midland, MI. The food was great, simple but at the same time sophisticated an packed with a ton of great flavors. Service was perfect, overall exceptional value.

    Asters environment, staff, and food are always great. I had a personal issue with my food last night (nothing bad, ended up being fixed later on) but yea. they can get pretty busy, but they’re a small business so patience is key.

    We were excited to try the Aster for my wife's birthday. The Open Table reservation asked about a special occasion and despite identifying a birthday, nothing was mentioned at the restaurant. The setting was quaint though rather noisy. The seating included a comfortable chair on one side of our table and an uncomfortable bench on the other side. Our waiter, Gavin, was friendly, helpful, and patient as he fielded our questions. We started with cocktails that were potent and flavorful. My wife's appetizer of kale salad included large pieces of tough kale. My butternut squash soup was quite good though a rather small portion. My wife's entree was the Ramen, served only on Wednesday. She was expecting chicken in the dish but was rather nauseated by the pork belly that was in it instead. My steak and potatoes portion was quite small. The potatoes were whole chunks of potato that were crisp-fried; rather tasty but heavy on my stomach. The leek au gratin was one mushy nondescript item in the middle of the plate. The Wagyu beef was rather tough and difficult to cut with the dull steak knife. Our dessert was a chocolate creme brulee type pudding with caramel on top. The portion was rather small though the taste was excellent.

    The food was sooooo delicious. The atmosphere was very hip and upbeat. Our service was exceptional. We will definitely go back again.

    Booked a dinner here Saturday night when my Seattle-based children were in town. They are used to amazingly fresh seafood living in the Pacific Northwest. We ordered the oysters, curry mussels and sweet potato soup as starters. I did not eat any oysters but my kids rated them 5/5 “for Michigan”. The mussels in curry broth with focaccia were AMAZING. You’ll need to order 2 extra orders of the best tasting, fresh focaccia to soak up all the delicious broth! The wait staff brought adorable sturdy hand made pottery bowls and wooden spoons with herbs/spices lining the bottom of the bowl. The soup was then poured on top and was very good. For dinner we ordered the hamburger and the salmon. Both were delicious. Specialty cocktails were also top-notch. Perfect dinner in every way. Can’t wait to come back.

    Great service. We had the Pink Moon oysters to start and they were great. I had scallops and my husband had the porkchop. Both meals were outstanding. For dessert we shared a chocolate mouse with salted caramel. This place is going to become at least a monthly stop for us.

    Drinks were great. Appetizers were great. Unfortunately most of the main meal dishes were cool/cold and we were mostly done eating by the time they checked up on us.

    Loved Aster. Just the right size restaurant for ambiance and vibe. Unique small plates were delicious. We had the smoked fish hush puppies and the flat bread served in cast iron skillet (can’t remember the name). Their cocktails were creative. Also enjoyed the bison stroganoff. The hamburger might have been lacking some seasoning…. We enjoyed this restaurant very much and will be back

    The food was too salty for us. Perhaps for some it’s just right. The sizes small portion size are rather small. And my salmon was very small. Appetizers were delicious. The noise level from people talking from the other side of the restaurant (there were only eight people in the restaurant) could be heard quite loudly. They could benefit from some soundproofing. they have an excellent bartender and the drinks were delicious.

    Absolutely wonderful food and drinks as always. The bison stroganoff is an ultimate comfort food dish and the Coq au Vin was some of the best chicken we've ever had.

    We enjoyed the freshness and delicate flavors of our meals which obviously reflected its farm to table philosophy. Menu is is limited but I expect this is due to what’s available in season and it likely changes. Will definitely come back to find out.

    We ate here the night of Boo Bash. Enjoyed our experience very much. We would recommend the place to others and eat there again. Food was very good. The squash soup excellent. It is delivered piping hot and poured directly at the table. Beet salad good. Not the best I ever had. Mushroom risotto good but honestly not as creamy and flavorful as I hoped. Branzino very good. Unfortunately the waitress forgot my wine and hadn’t checked back till after we finished our soup. And only checked with us 1 other time. I don’t want constant attention, but do not want to have to track them down if I need something.

    Appetizers (pajeon and smoked fish fritters) were delicious. We felt rushed by waitstaff the entire meal. She took away my appetizer plate while I was still raising my fork with the last bite to my mouth. If we paused eating to talk, she would immediately come over and reach to try to take our plates away. We weren’t the last table, so unsure why they wanted us to leave, but that’s how it felt. Entrees were a mess. Pork chop was gray, no sear at all, and someone in the kitchen had cut into it (we assumed to check doneness?). Spatzle was bland and just bad. Steak and potatoes was a huge disappointment. Menu did not indicate the cut of steak, but was a cut that needed to be cooked to medium to be tender. Chef let us order it rare…which left it tough and chewy. I expected the ‘leek au gratin’ to be a nice side dish, but it was one thin sliver of leek with a dusting of Parmesan. Barely a garnish, certainly not a side vegetable. Bulgogi was cloyingly sweet, tasting like it was made with a commercial jar sauce. Side note: a farm to table, homegrown concept restaurant in Michigan should not be serving oysters and a lobster roll special.

    AsterResponded on November 1, 2022I assuming you don't understand our concept. We base our restaurant off of sustainability, seasonality, and community. Oysters filter our oceans, it is a good practice to eat them, also bringing lobster to midland for fun has been wonderful. If you had such a terrible time here why didn't you say something? Your review doesn't even have a name for us to reach out privately to fix your issues. Why hide behind the computer and not let us know face to face what we did wrong? I'll wait for reply.

    The service from every employee was top notch. Kind, patient, informed. The food was perfectly paired with every bite being crafted and considered for a great layering of flavors. The dessert of banana ice cream was light but deeply flavored and a great chocolate alternative for those of us who are not huge chocolate dessert fans. The table-side coffee was worth the money even my non-coffee drinking husband loved it. My only slight critique would be the music was pretty heavy and a little loud for the overall experience and it didn’t fit the overall experience. But that couldn’t possibly distract from the fantastic evening they created.

    Good is exceptional. Service excellent. Friendly staff. Oysters were great. Shucker deserves credit. Not one shell. Not fancy inside, but the food quality compensates beyond measure.

    The food we ate was outstanding! I was really disappointed that for the price we paid a starch and vegetable was not included. Bread was not offered. Small lap dog being held over bar counter turned me off. Dirty wine glass 😕. Glad we tried it once. Good wine list. No beer on tap 🤷‍♀️

    AsterResponded on October 15, 2022Couple of things I want to point out. All entree style dishes have a vegetable or a starch sorry if you missed that reading our menu. Appetizer have a (s) next to them to show they are a "starter" might of what confused you. To answer the "lap dog," that animal is a service animal. We invite all services animals to our place, I would not want to handicap anyone when dining at Aster. Next door has a massive tap list so I also promote our neighbors when anymore ask why we don't have a tap.

    The pork chop was not cooked, actually almost raw in spots. The Hummus had no taste. Don’t know what we expected but we were not happy with the food.

I only ask because we want to insure every guest has the same and wonderful experience. With that being said unfortunately I cannot help when you are not at the restaurant to do so and instead write a bad review about our restaurant and not give us a chance to fix it. We hope we can remedy your mishap with a better experience next time.

    It took a half hour to be waited on, it was so noisy we could barely hear each other across the table. The salmon entree was about 3 inches square and we left hungry.

I think you forgot to mention in your review how your food tasted? How was the presentation? Did you happen to have a cocktail, beer or wine? If so how was it? Unfortunately I cannot go to guest to tell them to keep it down because they are enjoying their meal and having a great time. I hope this helps in the future for your dining with us or another establishment.

    The food was not to disappoint. We had the mussels as a starter, which had the right mix of flavor with fennel and sauce, and not too much salt. I had the scallop special, and my husband had the bulgogi. The scallops were fresh and seared perfectly. The intent of the flavor was good but it seemed to lack flavor complexity. The bulgogi did not disappoint, and we've spent a lot of time in Asia eating the real deal. The ingredients of the kits were very fresh, which was a necessary complement to the meat since it was a bit on the salty side. I noticed some people were not sure how to eat it, and I was surprised that none of the servers explained the process of eating it. The white wine list checked the boxes for any wine that I would've chosen with vino verde, albarino, Oregon, and New Zealand - I went with the New Zealand sauvignon blanc. I was even impressed to see Mezcal on the drink list (we used to live in Oaxaca). Overall, I gave it four stars because the noise level is high making it awkward at times having to talk loudly or strain to hear the other person. I had requested a table outside, but the only two-person table was directly in the sun without an umbrella option. My alternate request in the reservation was to be seated near the window, which was available. Instead, we were seated in the middle of the restaurant where it was louder and colder (we both were uncomfortably cold inside). I had also indicated in the reservation that it was a Birthday occasion, and this was never acknowledged. Our server was very attentive and friendly though. We would return.

    This was our first visit. The hush puppies and lobster rolls were outstanding. The service was excellent. We will definitely be back.
