Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Tommy DiGiovanni

From the OpenTable editors: This legendary restaurant has been doing some of the best Creole fine dining in the French Quarter for more than 100 years. Chandeliers, white tablecloths, and tiled floors set the stage for a series of NOLA favorites like the must-order soufflé potatoes, seafood gumbo, and the spice-studded café brulot that's torched tableside. Make sure to grab a classic New Orleans cocktail before or after your meal at French 75, Arnaud's adjacent James Beard Award-winning bar.

The food and service for brunch was impeccable as always. It made our mother’s birthday celebration a wonderful occasion for all. Thank you for continuing the New Orleans tradition in great taste! We always enjoy our Arnaud’s experience.

There is not a bad choice on the menu. My particular favorites are escargot, gumbo, souffle potatoes and veal torenados. The food is only part of the experience though. Between my favorite waiter Jasper and the maitre'd Augie, the service is nothing short of superb. Thank you Arnaud's for another memorable evening in New Orleans.

Disappointing Birthday Dinner – Poor Service and Underwhelming Food I visited Arnaud’s for my friend’s birthday dinner during Restaurant Week, expecting a special and enjoyable evening. Unfortunately, the experience fell far short. The Restaurant Week menu was extremely limited and lacked the quality and creativity we anticipated from a restaurant of this caliber. When asked for our impressions, we shared polite and honest feedback—that the meal simply wasn’t very good. Shockingly, the manager reacted defensively and escalated the situation to the point where we were asked to leave and told we were banned from returning. This response to reasonable feedback was both unprofessional and disappointing. The food itself was bland and overpriced, and the lack of hospitality was truly surprising in a city known for warmth and exceptional cuisine. The crème brûlée was completely inedible, and the manager did acknowledge this. Sadly, I cannot recommend Arnaud’s based on this experience. There are many better options in New Orleans offering great food and gracious service.

We booked our anniversary dinner through OpenTable, and I’m glad we paid attention to the dress code—more than one guest in shorts or men’s sandals was politely turned away at the door. A private event had commandeered half the building, so we were seated in the main dining room. Knowing Arnaud’s has been around for more than a century, we expected a dash of historic charm; what we found was a bright, bustling room where tightly packed tables and high chatter levels made conversation a bit of a strain. Without the jazz ensemble we’d read about, the space felt more like an elegantly appointed food court than the atmospheric Creole landmark we’d imagined. Service, however, was faultless. Our waiter was warm, witty, and perfectly attentive, striking that sweet spot between professional polish and genuine personality. The kitchen delivered, too: every course from the special Restaurant Week menu was skillfully prepared and generously portioned, a solid value for the fixed price. Because we’d noted our 10-year wedding anniversary on the reservation, the staff sprinkled in just-right touches: a playful tableside flourish from our waiter and a complimentary upgrade to dessert. It was enough to feel seen without veering into kitsch. In the end, Arnaud’s offered classic Creole cooking and impeccable service, yet the room’s overly bright lighting, close quarters, and absence of live music dulled the magic we’d hoped for on a milestone evening. If you visit during Restaurant Week—or anytime—come for the food and old-guard hospitality, but temper your expectations for ambience. I’d give it a solid 3½ out of 5.

We don't live in New Orleans but travel there several times a year, primarily for dining. We had not been to Arnaud's for years until last December when we went there for a seasonal Réveillon dinner. We were very impressed by every aspect of that experience and decided to return two days ago to have their Restaurant Week menu. We were not disappointed. The main dining room is beautiful, the waitpersons and maître d' could not have been friendlier or more accommodating and, of course, the food was delicious. Dining at Arnaud's is a traditional "old school" experience and highly recommended for special occasions. We felt that we had a great meal and had actually "been somewhere." In contrast, another comparably priced restaurant nearby with excellent food (where we ate the night before) was recently rennovated and now seems to be a noisy place to eat (not dine) next to men in short pants rather than sport coats!

Wonderful experience! The food was delicious, the historic building was so cool, and the service was amazing. In a city where bad service and high prices seem to be the norm, Arnaud's is the COMPLETE opposite! The only thing I can find to "complain" about is that it felt really bright in the dining room during dinner. We all said that this was the best dinner - by far - that we had while in New Orleans. A must-try.
