It is important to be in the right mindset for this restaurant - dining with a sense of humor. Nearly everything about the restaurant, the way the food is presented, the flavor combinations, even the wallpaper in the restroom, is designed to elicit a smile or laugh.
However, like some jokes, some of the dishes fall flat. The positives: location, sea bass, bread, wait staff service, creativity of the dishes. I am sorry to say that nearly everything else misses the mark. Many of the dishes have flavor combinations that are too eclectic and do not enhance the dish. Some dishes are undercooked, others are overcooked - this can happen sometimes with grilled food.
Great service enjoyed detail and knowledge that our server had.
Outstanding meal, beautifully presented and an expertly combined combination of textures and flavours. The big eye tuna with tomato jelly was outstanding, the whole Dungeness crab was delicious served with the hen of the wood mushroom and bread roles for the crab fat. The fillet of sea bass with the Sichuan chili’s was superb. But more than the food was the quality of the staff. The kitchen was a quiet exquisite clock in motion and the waiting staff, bar staff and management were the best, which is there when you want them to be and absent when you don’t. One of the best dining experiences I’ve had in San Francisco. We will be back.
The food was so innovative and delicious. They treated us to a soft serve ice cream with hot salted caramel poured on top. It was probably one of the best desserts I have ever tasted.
It was a bit pricey, but we enjoyed every bite.
Great experience. Fantastic food and service. Our favorite foods were from the wood-burning ovens. The seafood was great, but we were also amazed by the cauliflower and beet dishes.
Interior is rustic and cozy but sleek. Some of the warmest hospitality and best service I’ve experienced at any restaurant. Shoutout Marla. Now for the food. Every dish was immaculately presented and you could clearly taste and feel each component. Winners of the night were the Big Eye Tuna w/ Tomato Jelly & Shiso, Amberjack w/ Cultured Cabbage & Pear, and Radicchio w/ Radicchio XO. I see a lot of people bashing Angler for the price. Yes it’s a pretty pricey restaurant. However: A) it’s fine dining. B) portion sizes considering the quality ingredients are well-worth the asking prices. C) you can eat here pretty reasonably if you stick to Raw Bar, Salad, and Vegetable sections of menu. Totally worth price imo and will definitely be returning.
Best Restaurant in San Francisco
It was a great experience until we were asked to move to another table after we ordered another round of drinks. Nothing like that had ever happened to me at a restaurant, especially after we spent over $1,000 on dinner.
I felt the need to tell the manager why I would never be back!
Enjoyed the meal and liked the service very much. It is an expensive place but I was not looking for value Resturant so it was ok
Way overpriced: this restaurant is overly expensive for the quality of the food delivered. Service is excellent. Room/atmosphere is average.
Place is cool. People nice. But food was not good. Just ok. And very expensive. Music is not a great fit. Super bummed. Mostly about food.
This is my second time at Angler and just as I remember it -- it was a very nice treat. I had the swordfish steak and it was delicious along with the radicchio salad, roasted cauliflower and sea bass. I plan to go back again!
Took my mom for her 67th birthday and they treated us with superb service. The food was outstanding and they were extra patient and kind to my elder mother. Amazing restaurant all around.
Good food, but limited menu
My absolute favorite SF restaurant bar none! Specifically chose it for my birthday dinner!! Total hit with my wife and guests!!!
Best steak I had in the US. Outstanding!! All dishes were excellent.
Annoying music, from a terrible sound system, I don’t get that concept.
I want an octopus salt shaker!
Food wise, loved the geoduck starter sashimi and fritters, pickled peppers, Parker House rolls with cultured butter, roasted maitake, fried quail and crispy bass. Also had the signature radicchio and antelope tartare. Finished with soft serve with cacao nibs and salted caramel.
We were seated in the game room, full of taxidermy trophies.
We loved the food and atmosphere at Angler! Every detail was exceptional, and the quality of the food and flavors was memorable. Highly recommend! We had the fresh oysters, mushroom broth, grilled fish, cauliflower and spicy mushroom. The dessert was also delicious.
Excellent cuisine. Wait person guided us through the menu. Try the radiccho salad. Nice soft serve ice creame sunday. the Amberjack was delicious and would be a winner in any sushi house.
Worth every penny, fantastic dishes, biblical wine list, and strong staff.
Definitely special occasion and a must get-to for the foodies out there. It’s pricey so save your pennies and then go all out to enjoy the full experience. The scallops were amazing.
Birthday - great fun!
Very, very good.
Interesting approach that was not out cup of tea. Unfortunately, we were seated in a side room at a table near a small secondary bar, the server staying and the hallway to the restrooms. Make it a requirement to not have a table in this small ancillary room! To the host's credit, we were moved to a table in the same little room with a nice view of the Bay Bridge, but the main dining room is where you want to be. We must have dealt with 10 or more wait staff and servers. Obviously, all are coached to be quick about what they do. As a result, it's not possible to develop rapport with a primary waiter. Food-wise, all was prepared and presented beautifully, but the menu is very limited and most portions smallish. My clam on the half she'll was not even as big as a Quarter! Better place for true foodies. Lastly, the '80s music was recently and loud, and took away from the ambiance in our view. We noted several reviews before booking that pointed this out, too. Now we understand. If you are a foodie, enjoy. I believe the restaurant needs to recalibrate their approach.
It’s rare to find a non traditional seafood experience that is Michelin quality. So enjoyable. The blowfish tails were excellent but the amber jack was even better. Loved the creativity, the quality and the wine list. Didn’t hurt they had a soundtrack playing that had us and the two other couples (we didn’t know) at the tables next to us all singing along. We will be back.
Angler is now our favorite San Francisco restaurant. We have made several visits. Expensive and worth it.
Beautiful setting on The Embarcadero overlooking the Bay Bridge. Excellent, knowledgeable service.
This visit started with a short term menu item of Abalone Custard with Truffles and Diver Scallops with Apple & Wasabi. We have had their famous Raddichio y Raddichio salad on previous visits, so we tried an excellent Chicory Caesar. More Diver Scallops, their regular grilled, then Salt & Pepper Bass. Everything was exquisite. Closed out with their awesome frozen custard Sundae. Sounds silly but it’s great.
Very enjoyable, great service, awesome food! Staff were very helpful with recommendations for both food and wine. Great music playing all evening!!
This was bar-none the best meal I have ever had. Rarely do I leave a place remembering every single thing I ate, but at Angler the entire meal told a story from start to finish. The oysters were the best I ever had and being from Miami I eat a lot of oysters from all over. The sea urchin was incredible. The scallops were flawlessly prepared. The antelope was like nothing we’ve ever had in the best way. The mushroom was in a league of its own. The blowfish blew our mind.
Eat here. You will not regret it.
Angler continues to be my favorite restaurant in San Francisco. The ambiance is friendly and chic without being pretentious. The service is always professional and courteous with being condescending. I like the simplicity of the menu.
It is often difficult to pick a 'favorite' as all the dishes are amazing, however this time, the scallop custard won - hands down. The Goe duck was pretty amazing as well. The only less than perfect dish was the grilled lobster. The flavor was smoky and savory, however it was slightly undercooked making the tail mostly indelible. The staff kindly comp'ed us an extra dessert; coconut sorbet which was rich and creamy. My favorite dessert is the soft serve ice cream with caramel sauce... Mmmmmmmm! I look forward to my next fine dining experience at Angler!
The staff were very nice and helpful. The space is beautiful. The food was delicious.
Highly recommend the chiefs choice - fantastic meal - potato’s and scallops are a must.
We told them that one of guests had a birthday. When the dessert came no candle, no reference
The food was fantastic! The ambiance was great and the wait staff were very attentive and knowledgeable. We will definitely be back.
No special treatment for anniversary
Food not as expected not good I left food on table
The food was expensive and didn't taste good. The service was pushy, almost to the point of rude. It's only redeeming quality was the atmosphere as it has a great view of the Bay Bridge.
Took my girlfriend here for her Bday. Was not disappointed. The food was AMAZING, the service was fantastic and we got a great view of the Bay. They even helped out by putting a candle in her dessert. 10/10 would come again. (Definitely pricey, but worth it for special occasions)
Menu was interesting. We ordered the bass, cauliflower, hen of woods mushroom, and scallops. The food was average and completely overpriced. There are much better restaurants in SF for better value. Would not go back.
